The Falke is pretty docile on the ground exhibiting reasonable directionable stability, whereas the Europa is distinctly lively, needing quick thinking to keep it straight. In the air the Europe is pure pleasure and much more responsive than the falke. Once my Europa flew I lost all interest in flying the Falke. It was a wonderful German Falke side-by-side -seated motor glider, year model 1972. My purpose was to understand beforehand my soon completed Europas take-off and landing characteries. It was a nice experience for a Cessna boy like me. I am alive and Falke is still flyable & landable. It was not a shock at all, much easier than I thought before. Is there anybody out there who has flied both Europa Monowheel and Falke motor glider? Could you please compare especially landing qualities of those planes? I noticed that speed just before touch was very important. It was about 90 km/h = 50 knots. Also heading along runway. Gliding w/o engine was charming. How about gliding wings to Europa, can man still purchase a long wing kit? Price? We found that the problem lay with the position of the flap hinges bolted to the wing. We had to elongate the holes in the flap hinges to enable the flap to fully retract against the wing. Once we had done this the flaps came up that extra 3/8". We had to replace the flap hinges and r edrill the holes in the correct place. We were advised that it was not acceptable to leave it as it was. I've lined up all flying surfaces and found that the flaps (both sides) are lower than the alerons about 3/8". The flap rod (tri gear with electric flaps) is up against the baggage bay inside. As far as I can see there is no adjustment I can make to anything to bring flaps up. My question is has anyone else had this problem and is it going to be a problem. I don't think so but will wait to hear for some of you others. Only when you have flown it and made sure you'll feel comfortable in it, only then you should make your decision. This way you'll avoid much disappointment, and be able to sort out between rumor and over enthusiastic comments. Recently, a friend from abroad asked questions about our project. As he was able to come to our country, I suggested he spend some time with us and feel and fly the aircraft as much as he could. So he flew several hours, tried landing in crosswind (piece of cake), stalls, paved and grass runways, etc.. Now he feels the airplane suits him, and he made his decision to build. Last night, I strapped it up with 6 ratchet straps to see how much of the front edge I can remove. If I grind a few remaining mm down on the lip as Graham suggests I think I'll get away with it. I'm reluctant to replace all three windows and getting a colour match for the others isn't that likely. My previous aircraft was a Falke. For the record the Europa is in a different class.! Falke: I remember having to pull the radio out of its housing when flying in rain as the wet entered the back of the radio set !................................ The biggest differences: Speed Europa twice as fast Load: Passengers plus fuel and 5Kilo of luggage total only for the Falke Range: Europa twice the range Falke Short field landing tricky with airbrakes (just wants to keep flying) Taxing at GA airfield diffificult Avionic panel limited spaces on Falke Weather proofing better on the Europa. Gert, At the expense of being ridiculed....! IMHO if a pin goes in no matter what the type of fit sooner or later it will begin to loosen. IMHO the only conceivable 100% way is to clamp the "f.***g" lot solid! (if you don't wish to have hassle freeing off loctite) ... I already supplied a set of my clamps to a guy on 3/8" oversized holes that have worn yet again. Amen. Easy to write, but believe me - a hard job. I did the fix according to the factory recommendations, but actually I feel that it's just a matter of time before the problem occurs again. Think a better fix would have been to put AN5 bolts instead of the pins and to mill a aluminum plug which could slide inside the TP4 torque tube and give you the possibility to tighten the arrangement together. I am interested in comments from folks who have done this mod. the Europa way to hear from their experience. William neither. The pins referred to are the ones connecting the tailplane drive pplates to the torque tube. The main ones in the center can also get loose but its drilling the nylon end float bushes that causes the most problems. Inserting and removing the pins repeatedly also causes looseness to develop Graham ________________________________ Message 10 ____________________________________ Time: 03:59:42 PM PST US From: Graham Singleton Subject: Re: PROBABLE SPAM> RE: Europa-List: Mod. 62 - Replacement of tailplane torque tube drive pins --> Europa-List message posted by: Graham Singleton Paul I did remove a pair once, (fortunatley before the top went on :-) ) and they came out easily as soon as the nut was slackened. That was a pleasant surprise. The tubing I used was the soft 1/4" stainless the factory supplied for breather tubes etc. Had to drill for clearance to get the bolts through. I used a sharp cobalt steel drill.
