This seems to be useful evidence that the crowbar unit is doing a good
job. Relying on spotting voltage spikes during flight and switching the
generator off manually would probably mean that a substantial number of
spikes occurred before anything was noticed. It also brings to your
attention that maybe the regulator is not far away from failure.
As not all regulators fail around 200hrs it may be that some of us are
working them nearer to their limits than others. There was a suggestion
recently that keeping the average demand below 12 amps was good for
regulator durability. I would also suggest that ensuring it receives
adequate cooling air and perhaps giving it some vibration protection
might help. Making sure the case is well earthed is another essential
requirement.

I did not take the top cowling off so have not inspected the regulator
but from others who have e-mailed, 200 hours seems to be the lifespan. I

long-life enough, vibration
resistant and take only 3A.
Also it=B4s size is reasonable,
the lenght is about 100 mm
and diameter about 50 mm

Of course they heavier than
those led-toys but less than
man can guess.
I have also Xenon-lights in my
cars and I have to note
there is now life w/o Xenon
any more. They are like sun
itself. I have three years
experience of them (in
car use).
Price of the one pair is about
600 - 1000 euros depending
where you buy.

Guys,
Before blaming the carb heater for the fuel smell, why not be 100 % sure
before adding mods. Just disable the coolant flow by putting a clamp on one
hose for one or two test flights, and get the engine nice and hot.
I have fuel smells, too. But in my case one source is the old hoses, some of
which I will change at the next annual.

Good luck getting a small enough light to stand up to the pounding of
the nose wheel. I used the new gas light and made a flange then bonded
it on and filled it out so the light is right above the air opening. Its
tight but work grest. Here is a picture if it comes through.

A few of us were talking about this at the PFA Rally couple of weeks
ago, someone pointed out that there is another possible source of
smells. The tank breather. When the aircraft climbs, air in the tank and
breather system has to expand.
When refueling some fuel gets pushed into the breather pipe, (I've seen
it many times.) After take off any air trapped in the tank will expand
as the aircraft climbs, the only way it can do that is up the tank
breather so fuel will get pushed out the breather, hence the blue stains
on the fuselage. The same thing happens if the aircraft is refueled
cold, then the sun comes out and we warm up.
Paul McA and I put the breather syphon break into the top of the XS
filler trunk which should prevent any fuel being expelled.

I am now on my fourth Duke and never had a Reg. failure although
i have heard of them failing with some owners, incidently, they were all fitted
with an alloy plate (heatsink ) on the rear face - somthing which
is not mentioned on the aircraft installation...
i've mounted mine below the oil tank , it looks as if in that position
it will be blasted by the air flow from the naca duct in the stb. lower
cowl and should be in cooler air after shutdown - i hope!

I am talking about the late 70s and early 80s now. I had BMs (R100RS)
because the reliability issues with the 900ss and their bretheren put me
off.
When they went they went really well - as Mike the bike's victories in IoM
desmonstrate.
New dukes are a bit different - so my mate who has the latest whatever it is
now ? 916?? Tells me.

My '81 900, silver blue, most beautiful SSD that I could not make run in
the city for some reason- carb related- was not electrically challenged
and the last, an ST4 gobbling-continents-for-breakfast red growler,
always ran perfectly. I still dream of it at night, going 500 miles and
getting there and not want to get off it already and going for another
spin...and then I had a one pot 350 trial type that I had for too short
time. And when I hear one very occasionally, I get goosepimples...
