Hi,
Can anyone throw any light on the following? I'm rebuilding kit # 31 which was
obviously an early Classic machine. I've been told that the tailplane torque
tube from a new XS kit will be too small for my Classic tailplane fittings because
the tube diameter was changed at some point. This change was only a few
thou of an inch but using an XS tube will give too much play.
Does anyone know when this change was made?
Does anyone have an old Classic tailplane torque tube that they do not need?
Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil,
I don't know the answer to your question for sure, but I have access to
several early torque tubes that I could measure if you wished. However I
suggest the best route to an answer is via Europa 2004 or Andy Draper who is
now with the PFA

Dear Mike,
Thank you for your eMail of 16.10.2006.
My friend's Europa XS Monowheel is being converted to a TriGear. The
unbraked monowheel trailer was made for the Europa XS. The trailer was not
of a particulary good quality, so you might need to check the hinged spar
supports and some other small items. It is the official Europa trailer
offered in their catologue. My friend is happy with Pnd Strl 500. The
trailer canbe shipped to the UK of course, whereby you will have to absorb
the costs for transportation; however we can organise this. Is this of
interest for you?
Many thanks and kind regards,
Hans Siedsma

David, I am in the market for a mono XS trailer. Can you confirm whether
this one is for the XS (with the hinged spar supports)?.
Is it a factory made model?
What age and condition?
Please send any photos you may have to me off line.]
Thanks and regards

Hi Phil,
I have now measured two torque shafts, one early type, one much later. The
earlier one has a diameter of pretty well dead on 1.500" and the other newer
version came in at 1.496". Obviously a 4 thou difference! This would give a
sloppy fit in the main phosphor bushes.
Since the newer tubes are only the older ones turned or ground down I guess
Europa could probably source an un turned one for you. This should then fit
your older classic bearings and fittings.

Subject: | Using Super Fill |
Brian,
I have found Super Fill an excellent product. In particular it
feathers very well, enabling multiple applications to be applied and
sanded smooth. This I understand is not the case with the standard
filler provided.
You are correct though, out of the tin it is a bit difficult to
spread.
I use a wide metal spreader which I heat up quickly with a hair
dryer before each application. This avoids application of direct heat
onto the plane component which I don't recommend, without a lot of
care!! With the heat from the spreader the super fill goes on much
easier.

Subject: Europa-List: Using Super Fill
All:
I have just had my first go at applying superfil
to the surfaces of my control surfaces. I tested the product on the
underside of the trim tab just in case I goofed.
I am disappointed with the application of this
product. I expected a Bondo type consistency. However this was a bit
thicker and difficult to spread. Temperature in the shop is about 75
degrees today. I am using an automotive type bondo squeegee to apply
this product.
The problem is that it is now going on very
smoothly. This leaves voids and high points on the surface. It looks
awful. I was expecting a much smoother surface. I am attempting to just
cover the weave here but I know there is going to be a lot of sanding to
cut these peaks.
And comments or observations using this stuff
would be greatly appreciated.

Just a note to let you know that I've completed my ground run ups ( tri
gear with Jabiru 3300). I had to change the airmaster prop to a Jabiru prop
to get sufficent cooling
on the ground until after brake in. CHTs and EGTs are all in line. The
Jabiru prop (60X46) is cooling very nicely on the ground. The airmaster just
didn't push enough air
on the ground to cool. Brake in on a Jabiru is about 10-15 hrs and should be
ok with the Airmaster after that. But with all things will have to see what
happens when
I get there. I was able to burn in the brakes this weekend. After burn in
the parking brakes hold for full power run up. I'm not overly satisfied with
the quality of the finger
brakes but it seems to do the job if you pay a lot of attention to the
little things. Had to completely rebuild to get to work right. Next up is to
finish out the small stuff and call for
final inspection.........and then up, up and away!

Subject: | Tailplane Torque Tube |
Recent inspection has revealed excessive play in our port tailplane. The
problem is play in the torque tube pin. We incorporated Mod 62 (larger
pins) during our build so that's not an option.
Our Tech Counselor suggested using AN386 taper pins. He said they are
commonly used for similar applications in certificated aircraft. AC
43-13 confirms that AN386 pins are used in joints where "the absence of
play is essential".
A search of this forum suggested that the inner tube (TP4) would crush
and bind in the bearing (TP11) if tapered pins were used. Our thoughts
are to Loctite a 12" length of 1.375" OD .093" wall 4130 steel tubing
centered inside of TP4. This would prevent the crushing of TP4 and 12"
allows it to span the TP11 bearings. We would use a machine shop to
accurately make the tapered holes for AN386-3 pins. The tapered pins
would be installed vertically since there is not much material left on
TP9 (the center bracket) from the installation of 3/8", Mod 62 pins.
In the original design, the pins also locate TP10 sleeves against TP11
bearings inside the fuselage to prevent left - right torque tube
movement. We would like to locate TP10 independently of the pins. Our
thoughts are to machine TP10 sleeves to fit outside the fuselage between
TP12 and TP11 to achieve the same purpose. Alternatively, we could split
or slot TP10 and secure them to TP12 inside the fuselage with hose
clamps (Oetiker style for 360 deg contact).
Comments?

Jim,
Sorry to hear of your problem, but grateful for your bringing it to our
attention. I can't comment on your proposed solution but admire your
calm approach to solving it. Please keep us posted. Does the use of
tapered pins assume future adjustment, or will the tapered pins "self
adjust" in the event of future wear?
