Paul McAllister asked me to forward this question. Could anyone who can help reply direct to Paul please? <<Hi all <paul.mcallister@qia.net> <<I had the wings off so I could fit my Europa in my heated workshop and I put one of the small pip pins in a safe place....so safe that I can't find it. Can anyone tell me a US source for these. They are 1/4 in diameter and look like to be about 1.1" long from the collar to the ball. McMaster Carr has some thing similar, but not the same. Thanks, Paul > >

The simplest way to prevent bugs and debris is to fit a pitot type cover whilst the aircraft is parked. This is what many of us do. It will also stop water ingress and ice formation. The Europa was designed as a VFR aircraft so the vent is not designed to cope with icing whilst in flight. It is possible that whilst flying VFR in rain that there could be a small amount of water ingested but I have not heard of this being a problem. Was wondering if I could get input on: Attempt to cut down clogging (Bug, Ice formation, Debris) Thoughts on Reduxing in some stainless wool? (What are negatives) Thoughts on crushing vent tube into a oval, in hopes of preventing critter ingress and stream lining? What is favorite location, forward facing? Vertical(90 or 45 degree cut)? Subject: New AD on Rotax with Evans NPG+
    From: irampil@notes.cc.sunysb.edu
This just in: A mandatory AD for Stemme motorgliders with Rotax engines The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which is the Technical Agent for the Member States of the European Community, has issued AD No.: 2006-0311-E, dated October 11, 2006 (referred to after this as "the MCAI''), to correct an unsafe condition for the specified products. The MCAI states that: During certification works it was found that the cooling liquid EVANS NPG+ is flammable. The liquid cooling circuit of the Stemme S10-VT is not designed to be filled with a flammable liquid without prior modifications. For that reason, this Emergency AD requires the replacement of the EVANS NPG+ cooling liquid. In addition, the operation limit of the cylinder head temperature must be temporary changed to 120[deg]C/248[deg]F. Subject: Rotax 912S documentation
Fellow Europa-eans I have been using the appalling weather in the UK to catch up on some paperwork and have been checking that all Service Bulletins etc have been complied with/diarised. Can you help with the following: 1) SB-912-030 - with the Europa airbox supported off the engine mount this would seem to negate the need for this SB action. Do you agree? 2) SB-912-042 - whilst this is Mandatory the SB is open to interpretation in that it states (sect 1.5) Compliance - "In case of operating malfunction,....." How have people added this to their engine log book? 3) ASB-912-051 - this does not appear to have been issued for ULS engines as it does not appear on the documentation for my engine number. So does it apply to us? I have been checking on these Bulletins as they arise and yet each time I download the summaries it appears to give conflicting information. Does anyone else have this concern or experience. Regards Steve Pitt G-SMDH

I think we have a case of the right hand and the left hand not knowing about each other as Rotax have just issued (Nov) : SB-912-043 R2 Which allows Evans almost without limit and makes some onerous conditions for the use of 50-50 water/antifreeze. It is mandatory if using 50-50 to have a water temperature gauge as well as a CHT gauge. However it is only mandatory to have it done by Dec 2007. My thinking is that the two authorities will come to some conclusion one day and that conclusion could be anywhere from one extreme to the other. Nor am I sure that whether mandatory applies to an uncertified engine in a PFA aircraft even though the SB does mention the 912ULS engine. My 50-50 is watched very carefully and I have an undercooling problem rather than an overcooling one so I plan to wait until the end of the year before I even consider doing anything about it ! Sorry to bother you PFA folks. What is new is that the FAA just issued this as a mandatory AD for a Europa-related engine. Not binding on Europa owners at all, but of interest. Ira N224XS

Just checked on Europa's website and discovered yet another mandatory mod. This is Mod No. 72 and involves nearly all aircraft and involves a check of the landing frame for cracks before next flight and then fitting sleeves to the frame before next permit renewal or 25 hours. This operation needs the engine to be removed. Geoff Leedham G-EOFS

Richard, I agree with you. As long as we can monitor our CHT and Water temp (through the Skydrive Unit) then there is no problem with the 50/50 coolant. I have no problem with that as my CHT does not ever get above 95 C. Hi! Mike Removing and replacing your engine is straight forward ? I'd describe it as something different ! I guess if you say anything quickly it can be considered "straight forward"! But I put tubes in on my initial build probably not quite to the control standard specified now though . Perhaps our Mod Committee may like to pass comment? Hi all, During the flight tests of our project I had arranged to measure coolant, oil, and charge air temps before and after their respective coolers. According to the SB, we are "allowed" up to about 127C head temperature. We just have to add a red mark on the CHT gauge face. The 914 CHT temps are easy to maintain well within the 80-120C green range whatever the flight conditions. Regards, Gilles http://contrails.free.fr

Subject: Re: Fuel vent opening ideas wanted
The small rear facing hole was specified by Burt Rutan, to create a small flow of air through the vent allowing water that blew in to blow out again. This was in order to reduce the risk of the vent icing up. (Burt designed the EZs among many others and was the inspiration for the Europa.) Each of the four present at the barside chats in Yorkshire while the Europa was forming in Ivan's head built an EZ. We wanted an EZ that would operate from small grass fields. I think we will all be notified in due course both by the PFA and Europa. Parts have to be purchased from Europa either a repair kit if no cracks found or a new complete frame if original is cracked. This mod affects all europas except some classic installations with lightweight props fitted. I suggest everyone reads the mod on Europa Aircraft website http://www.europa-aircraft.co.uk/ ----- Original Message ----- From: Carl Pattinson To: europa-list@matronics.com Sent: Friday, January 12, 2007 9:26 PM Subject: Re: Europa-List: Mandatory mod no 72 If its a mandatory mod, why havent Europa written to us and why havent we been sent the requisite parts. BTW are we talking about monos or trigears or both??? We had enough of this aggro when we were building the aircraft - about 60 or so mods from memory (yes, we were one of the early ones (no49!!!). This is Mod No. 72 and involves nearly all aircraft and involves a check of the landing frame for cracks before next flight and then fitting sleeves to the frame before next permit renewal or 25 hours. This operation needs the engine to be removed. I'm also intrigued because I'm finally getting close to putting the lids on my XS wings and now there may be just one more and very last thing to do. If and when I reach a positive decision that there is not that will be fine. I can do a little more filling and sanding of flaps and ailerons in the interim. In theory one could just close off the space forward of the XS wing spar. The only remaining task would then be to assure pressure equalisation for those times one wants to fly instead of float. I thought of: - Tubing from wing root to fuselage roof - Float valve at wing tip - Multiple, redundant, tubing to fuselage roof - Construct close-off as weakpoint (safety valve) Difficulty is knowing quality of any 1-off design. Safety lost could easily exceed safety gained? B.t.w., maintaining pressure equalisation will probably be an issue with foam filling as well, I'm thinking. Jan de Jong 461

Hi All, I have the classic engine installation with the Rotax 912S. Interesting specs, as my Airmaster Prop weighs in at 26lbs!!! except I kept the glass spinner which weighs 1 lb less than the metal one! So that is within the specs as the cracks are not there!! Already checked it long ago when the fault was first observed . Will do it anyway, in time. My 1 lbs worth. They're available from Carr Lane online. Just make sure you measure and order exactly. The part number I show on my invoice is: CLMF CL-4-BPDR-1.15 Use this link: http://www.carrlane.com/Catalog/index.cfm/27025071F0B221118070C1C512A0A1F0900101B030010543C1C0C16190D172D252A5E445D You may have to cut and paste that into your browser. They run $16.25 each. I went ahead and got extras as I tend to hide things from myself too. Dan Visit - www.EuropaOwners.org

On further inspection of the web site, the exact size isn't shown so you may have to special order them from Carr Lane. Also, look to see if they have a distrubutor in your area. They got my order wrong online so I took them back to the local guy who got it wrong two more times before finally coming up with the correct size. But at least you know the exact model number now. Good Luck! Dan Visit - www.EuropaOwners.org

Any idea as to why this "mandatory" modification is not classified as a Service Bulletin. (In the US, it is SB which are rated as Airworthiness Directives) It was not on the web site last week when I completed my Annual Ira N224XS
