    Subject: Rotax carb rubber flanges
Recently I pointed out that an alternative much cheaper source of carb flanges was available. I have had input from a knowledgeable Rotax service agent that non approved parts should not be recommended for use on Rotax engines. I must point out that I am not making any recommendation for this product. Normally I, like others, would be happy to pay a bit extra to ensure that good quality parts are fitted. The oil filter is a good example. The Rotax approved oil filter does cost a bit more but it is a superior product and looks after the health of the engine well. Although carb flanges only need replacing every 5 years, a price of over =A3100/pair is excessive, hence the desire to find an alternative. I understand that there have been a few cases of flanges splitting over the years. In one case a flange failed after the first start after it had been fitted. Rotax themselves indicate that there are several reasons for failure even when the approved parts have been fitted. In particular carb or prop imbalance, too low an idle speed, loose engine mounts and poorly designed air intake systems have been mentioned. With all these aspects on top of the choice of carb flange it isn=92t easy to see what is the dominant reason for failure. I would appreciate any information of instances of flange failure so that we can try to detect whether there is a trend. My opinion. If the engine has been properly mounted with the carbs and prop balanced and the idle speed set high enough then the air cleaner (or plenum chamber) mounting and quality of carb flange might become the dominant factors. A well mounted plenum chamber (as in the case of the Europa) should give support to the rear of the carbs reducing the load on the flanges. Carbs with directly mounted cone shaped air filters are likely to put a greater load on the flanges. If the load on these flanges can be kept low the chances of failure are likely to be reduced whichever version is used. I emphasise this is a personal opinion and, as usual, the final choice is up to the individual owner. If I get enough information to show a trend I will publish it on the forum. Regards Nigel Charles

Hi Chaps, im looking at possibly the purchase of an Airmaster from the factory in the near future so need a few questions answered , 1 has any one an approximate hourly life for the brushes & whats the replacement cost for them - i assume its DIY replacement, 2 was the radio inerference ever cured ? 3 was the oil leak problem sorted or is it still ongoing, and 3, anyone got a good reason why the Airmaster should be ditched in favour of the Woodcomp Etc.? steve #573 tri. I have done 250 hours in mine so far. No sign of any brush problems 1B. A spare set of brushes is included in the box. It does require a soldering job to fit them but shouldn't be too difficult. 2. I have had a regular click very second or so in my radio. Never sure what caused it (is this the "radio interference" to which you refer ?), but I have almost finished a component change to a different intercom so that may fix it. 3. There used to be a weep of grease from the hub, showing up as a very slight line along the top cowling and onto the windscreen. I cleaned out the hub of that expensive grease and put in just enough. It doesn't leak now. Not a lot anyway :-) Second 3 (!) I have an Airmaster and that is what I started with so I can't comment about Woodcomp. The reversing trick sounds neat but not recommended in a tri-gear with the speed kit (the nose wheel fairing will turn around and it tail (now facing forward) will be hit by the propellor blades). My experience pretty much mirrors Richards, including the engine time. I have not had any kind of radio interference and the hubs stopped weeping in short order. I'm 100% satisfied with the AirMaster... Mine is an AP308 and I changed to the new AC100 controller at approx 400hrs. Have never had to change brushes. It is DIY change and I was given a spare set. I was at Airmaster last week with another builder to pick up his prop and they confirm that radio interference is solved and I can confirm I do not have any with mine. Oil leak problem is solved. Mine has operated faultlessly with excellent performance but I have not been able to compare with Woodcomp. MONO XS ROTAX 914 AIRMASTER 308 (AC100 Controller) 530Hrs Rgds > Sue & Bill

I have had no issues in 300 hrs, always works, no new brushes, no interference, a little grease spray but not an issue, amazing prop, go for it. 405 hours. Had to get the computer reprogramed once. took a week and no cost. Otherwise it works great and has been completely reliable. No problem with brushes which would be modest cost anyway. Hi! Richard/all IMHO there's those that have shot their prop. on the nose wheel faring and those that's going to, reverse thrust or not. Much cheaper to "grasp the nettle" now and shorten the faring. Whilst you are at it allow for the prop. getting nearer the faring when the nose leg is depressed. It doesn't look bad with the shorter faring anyway because it's a smaller wheel. I think I took about 3" off mine (before my prop was nackered by the nose wheel and yoke departing on landing )!
