Hi
I think both David and Graham have made the right conclusions.
The key thing is to make the gear lever as stiff as possible and no play
when it is in gear-down locked position.
One way to make the lever much stronger is NOT to bend the lever as per
manual. Keep it straight.
Moment may twist the lever, not much but enough to introduce a small
play when forces in not in one plan.
The optional strut will help but the strut is quite week. And Dural gets
much softer when you try to bend it.
The trick is to mount the lever on the other side of LG08S and use one
counter sink bolt and file the edge of the lever slightly, see link
below
http://scassel.se/europa/cap4/images/DSCN1129.JPG (The smallest distance
between lever and the landing gear frame will be about 2 mm)
The lever will then go throw the tunnel exactly as per manual.

And, as David Joyce said, the joint between lever and LG08S must be
solid as rock. Sanded contact surfaces and Araldite 420 make that
possible.

Hi Stephan,
As you say it is essential that the gear lever joint is absolutely
rigid.
There is the optional mod, or the =91bonded=92 approach or indeed both.
Together with the solid joint must go the proviso, as clearly defined in
the
instructions, that there is positive contact at both downlock stops.
This
should ensure a safe downlock configuration.
To ensure that this situation does not change over time and especially
after
=91heavy=92 landings, regular inspections need to be carried out.
During the
course of inspections on a couple of Europas I have found this positive
stop
contact to have been lost on one side. I have no reason to think that
they
were originally built this way but have got that way in service. The
effectiveness of the over centre lock is negated if one side makes
contact
early.
On the matter of =91keeping it straight=92 then this would seem fine
just
providing that at the up and locked position the gear handle is firmly
sprung loaded into the detent in the gear lever slot. IE spring loaded
to
the right!
If not there is a nasty tendency for the gear to come out of the
=91up=92
position in flight, particularly in turbulence. This can happen at 165
kts!
(flap limit speed?)
How is the weather in Norway this weekend? I bet is was OK.
Grrrrrrrrr.

I will be at Sun N Fun. Unfortunately driving again this year. The 11 o'clock AM
meeting at Europa 2004 worked well last year so look for me there. My cell phone
is 678-427-8826.
Looking forward to seeing all the Europaphiles in April.

Hi Graham,
I'm just getting around to fitting the new fuel system and have a few
questions:
1. I had understood that rigid tubing could only be used in the tunnel and
that flexible tubing (i.e. hose) was required for the attachment to the tank
(since it is 'floating') and inside the engine compartment (since the
connections to carbs, mech fuel pump etc have hose connections. Your parts
list and diags don't really mention the fuel runs in the engine bay, at what
point do you change from rigid alu tube to hose? Given the excessive temps
in the engine bay due to poor cooling airflow, what spec hose do you use?
2. I was planning to install a fuel computer, there has been a lot of chat
on the internet about fuel flow sensors, and the conclusion seems to be that
floscan are the only ones that will not block fuel flow if the impeller
jams, however they don't seem to work with the Stratomaster FF2 which is the
computer that I was thinking of installing so this part of it might have to
wait til the next rebuild.
3. You recommend bonding a length of alu tube into the tank fitting. Does
this just feed the drain fitting? Is this really necessary, surely if you
want to drain the tank either pull the whole tank fitting out, or lift the
tail so that the fuel flows to the front of the tank.
4. There are no coarse filters in the tank. Since the fuel has to pass
through the tight narrow passages in the fuel tap etc before getting to the
gascolator (I still have the original Europa one, haven't yet decided
whether to replace with the Andair), it seems that any crud in the tank is
best trapped there. I have got a pair of finger strainers from LAS, and was
going to bond them into the tank fitting instead of the drain tube. Do you
see any problem with this?
Hope all is well with you,
Graeme
