Subject: | Separate u/c outriggers and flaps |
Hi All
You ask if anyone can lower outriggers separately.
I have a mono with flaps and outriggers that go down separately. The
outriggers are electric and each have there own screw jack mechanism.
The flaps are also electric. The outriggers are linked to the u/c in
that they start to go down when the undercarriage is lowered. They also
start to retract when the u/c is retracted. This link was a really
sensible suggestion from Francis Donaldson PFA. However I can over ride
the mechanism and put the outriggers down when everything is retracted.
My original thinking was that this would act as a break when trying to
slow a slippery aircraft. In this I was wrong. When the outriggers are
down on there own they make only a wee bit of difference in the cruise,
around half a knot at 130 kts. This is much less than I had expected. My
outriggers do not have spats yet though I am about to do this.
Incidentally I have a whole panel of LEDs to tell me what state
everything all these things are in. On final I check for five greens. I
do like lots of lights.

MessageDear Karel,
You can be sure I do understand we need
outriggers (and full flaps) when on the ground!
I meant the moment before landing,
it could be possible to have graduated
flaps. Let is say 10 degrees during downwind,
20 degrees during basic and finally all 27 degrees
when landing...that was my point.
I do like my Cessna=B4s adjustable flaps.

Dear raimo,
Don't think you are the first of thinking that it would be better. You
know that for the trikes there is an operational mode for flap setting.
But we as mono's, we need our outriggers, so we can't separate the
setting for half or full or less. But remember we made perhaps the
choice to be faster.
I really think the best Europa flyers are the mono's. The trikes are
apron exhibition and not without success.
Best regards,

All,
Is there any mono flying with fixed main gear
but adjustable /moveable flaps /outriggers?
If so, what is the penalty (speed, handling)?
Just a thought. Personally I will definetely not try it.
Retractable main gear was one of my main
reason to build Europa MW - I like it.
Geometrical lock is safe - if it is there and w/o play.

Justin,
that is something, wau!
I do really respect your configuration.
Your flap motor - I assume you have
one for both flaps and it is located inside
the fuselage.
Maybe you are planning also electric air brake
to slow your slippery G-ZTED?!
Wishes, Raimo
PS: could you please send me some pics?

has anyone managed to cool a Jab 3300 properly yet? I know a couple who
haven't but it can only be a matter of persuading the cooling air to go
through the fins I suspect?

Hey Graham,
N245E has a cool running 3300 installed. It didn't start out that way, but
I've arrived at a combo that seems to work quite well. I'm very pleased with
it! I'd be happy to share what it took to get there if you are interested. I'm
currently in Colorado and away from my main computer. If you can wait a
couple of days until I return I'd be happy to flood your inbox with photo's of
my
installation.
One thing that is probably different on mine is I used the Suncoast
Sportplanes FWF. I think most of the folks who are having overheating issues on
Jab
powered Europa's are using the stock Jab cowls. Suncoast's cowls use round
intakes. The Jab factory cowls I've seen use "D" shaped intakes and that
turbulates the intake airflow at high angles of attack. The result is overheating
at
high angles of attack, i.e., climb out.
Contact me off list and I'll load you up when I get back to Tennessee.

Raimo
Justin's Europa is outstanding , in several ways. You should copy it,
especially the wing root fillets, door struts and undercarriage retract
lever.

Hi John,
Since I'm installing the Jab3300A also, I would appreciate it if you could
add my name to the "To" list when you send out these pix. I have the SunCoast
FWF kit but I want to make sure I use all the tried and true methods that
those successful people before me have come up with.
