JR ----- Original Message ----- From: Kingsley Hurst To: europa-list@matronics.com Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2007 9:51 PM Subject: Europa-List: Off Topic - A trip to see a B707 Fellow Europaphiles, A couple of weeks ago I said I was hoping to score a trip by Europa to Longreach in Western Queensland to see the landing of QANTAS's first jet aircraft. Well the trip came off but the aircraft wasn't allowed to land . . . the crew need more training! . . . . . yes we have them here too (a delightful bureaucracy by the name of CASA) Not to be put down, the aircraft was flown up from Sydney and did two low passes and four approaches and go-arounds before returning to Sydney. It is now to return for its final landing at the end of June and will join its big brother, a B747-200 already on show near the QANTAS Founders Museum. My mates little 912 tri-gear took us for the 650 nm round trip in fine style never missing a beat and burning no oil. I might say I was quite pleased it didn't miss a beat too because we flew over heaps of very inhospitable country for 25% of the way. Avg fuel burn was 13.9 LPH and avg speed just over 100 kts. Have attached a few photos for anyone who might be interested. Pommies - again please note the weather in all photos. This is what I expect in June when I'm in the UK. Not to mention the bubble-wrap and masking tape "insulation", nylon tie, other cable conflicts and gobs of red insulating tape (also heat stressed and burnt at the edges). The "cowboy" standard of construction obviously leaves a lot to be desired; but maybe it was "....... all the Inspector's fault....." (if there was one)! This is one of the 'gory photos' Willie referred to, taken of the hose damage on an MCR-01 Banbi fitted with a 912. Mike ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of William Harrison Sent: 09 April 2007 13:57 To: europa-list@matronics.com Subject: Europa-List: WARNING - Europa/Rotax 912/914 Owners. Mike Your timely warning reminds me of a similar but different problem found on my 912ULS at last permit renewal. One of the coolant pipes was found to be burnt by an exhaust downpipe. The damage was confined to the heat shielding which had burnt right through and was about to burn through the rubber hose. Basically, the hose routing was too close to the downpipe - a previous owner had wrapped it up with heat shielding to compensate. An extra reason why this was alarming was that a 912-engined DynAir Banbi in the same hanger had recently suffered a complete loss of coolant through an identical problem (the owner lived to tell the tale but had his wallet lightened by an expensive engine rebuild). I believe Mike Gregory has some gory photos of the damage. Happy flying Willie Harrison (G-BZNY) On 8 Apr 2007, at 20:01, Mike Parkin wrote: Hi Guys, For all Europa owners with Rotax 914. Just preparing to incorporate Mod 72 and took the opportunity to have a good look around. I found one of the oil pipes badly charred by No1 cylinder exhaust pipe. The pipe concerned is the one that connects the oil cooler to the oil pump. Fortunately, when I installed the pipe I fitted some heat shielding from 'Demon Tweaks' - the heat shield was burned through and the pipe was just starting to be affected. On initial installation the pipe did not touch the exhaust, so the bend must have eased during use. Looking at the installation, it seems that a slightly shorter pipe after the bend where it connects to the oil pump should solve the problem. Hopefully, this is a one off and my aircraft is the only one affected. But I thought all you chaps might like to know. It is worth a quick look - a burst oil pipe in this position could be very dangerous.
