William/Jos:
I have discovered (not for the first time - but again...) that being
familiar with operating these types of device is far from installing them!
I appreciate the chat regarding their relative positions - something which
will get more thought after your messages.
Where would you put the 'reverse/unreverse'? - near the throttle or up the
instrument board? - I was hoping to provide the light indicating full
reverse at the top of the panel near the line of sight ahead so as to react
more quickly to reverse being ready. I thought to join 'reverse ready', 'oil
pressure drop', 'angle-of-attack' led and 'over/under-volt' and 'fuel
pressure drop'lamps up high for more conspicuous notice and reaction.
Thoughts?
Cheers, Ferg

Yes;
Typically they come back, only when there is an incident or accident. A
homebuilt crashed here once several years back. A newspaper crew came by
to interview a homebuilder (me) and take some photos of my project in the
garage. I gave them a good deal of information about building and
technique and effort. However when the story came out in the paper you
would have thought they interviewed someone else. It had the slant that I
was a taking my life in my own hands as a risk taker doing such a thing.
The media dives into things with their stories to grab people's attention
rather than to depict the true but sometimes mundane realities of what is
actually the case.

Hi Ferg,
The rev/unrev with blocking flap sits next to the cs controller. Thats in the lower part of the avionics panel. There are some pictures at http://www.europaowners.org/kit600 : instrument panel. I do not have have rev indicator light.

Andrew,
In case you have yet to determine how to address this, IMHO any
reasonable solution should be focused on not generating bending
stresses on any of the components (including the portion of W18
embedded in the wing) when the bolts are tightened.
It would also be worthwhile to determine as best you can that the
misalignment did not result in air bubbles within the W18 embedment
and rib reinforcement.
I suspect we all have those occasions when we get to look at our
personal standards; as I used to tell my staff, "we can only strive for
perfection".

Hi Steve
You sound surprised that the press could possible put any kind of
sensationalist slant on the truth rather than tell it as it is :-)

I also noticed that the nylon legs are preventing my flaps from fully
retracting. The upper limit of the flap movement seems to be limited by
the nylon legs coming in contact with the FL3 plate, and this is
slightly short of the condition required to get the flap and aileron
perfectly aligned. Anyone else notice this?
One thought was to locally shave the nylon legs where the FL3 is coming
in contact. All I would need is another 3mm of travel at the FL3, which
would translate into something larger at the trailing edge of the flap.

Haha, of course this isn't what I meant. It's a great point to hearken to
though, when the reporters come knocking. I have heard of the
story-twisting reports SO many times. Unfortunately, in an accident, they
are usually looking to find information on a negative tint. If airplanes
were unsafe, and aircraft accidents happened every day, they really would be
mundane, and the accident would be just what it is -an accident (like car
accidents). They would not get the (law and procedure-changing)reporting or
near the attention in the paper. Its kind of ironic that the safer they are,
the more unrealistically negative reporting they get.
We may have to come up with something that is sensational enough to stir
attention, but doesn't have a negative accident to go with it. Then we could
get an interview that would put up the experimental aircraft, as they should
be.
It's a tough one...
Fly a tough rescue mission to help someone stranded, preferably a politician
or actor?
Non-profit Flights for food donations for the needy?
Offer up free flights for reporters, maybe? <shrug, grin>
