Subject: | Re: Oil Pressure Sender |
Thanks Nigel,
The oil sender extension hose will be one of the mods on our extensive to do
list this winter. The plane is now 5 years old and is showing signs of
"wear".
We intend to take her off line sometime over the winter and spend a
concentrated fortnight fixing all the niggles we missed when she was first
built.
We are also seriously considering a VP prop after a series of scary takeoffs
in nil wind and very warm conditions (ie: last Sunday). The most recent was
from Bicester with a run of over 900 metres and we still scraped over the
boundary fence at 150 feet. We checked all the usual suspects - engine
delivering full power? - brakes binding? - wind direction - grass length
etc. Everything appeared to be as normal.
The only consolation (if any) was that other pilots complained of similar
problems so we guess it was just down to the conditions on the day.
What we need to figure out is whether the benefit from a VP will be
sufficient on its own without upgrading the engine. The static RPM is 5200
(std 80 hp Rotax). Presumably we could boost the RPM to 6000 with a finer
pitch on the prop but were not sure what difference that would make.
Still, we have six months to figure that one out.
Best wishes,
Carl & Dot

Hi Carl
I had a short length of hose made up with the appropriate fitting
swaged on each end. The hose was tie-wrapped to one of the lower
coolant hoses giving the sender vibration protection. This was done
after a sensor failure at about 100hours. No problems so far at over
200hours.

Hi All
Having been away in the U.S. for the last 6 months I am somewhat behind the
curve with regard to the Mode S situation.
Can anyone tell me if I actually need to fit this piece of kit right now or
not?
I have tried reading the CAA website, but quite frankly I am even more
confused. I want to fly both VFR and IFR so can someone please help
Do I need it or not
Many Thanks

Ramio,
Great pictures,
I am attaching a couple of pics showing the following:
Ramp I made to lessen the angle on the ramp so one person can easily
push
the A/C into the wheel cradle.
An eye bolt that I use to secure the tail to the trailer as well as a
tie
down point for the airframe. This prevents it from going forward, just
in
case.
Trailer safety chains.
The wing support straps that I made to hold the wing.
Now I have some questions.
The wheel ramp attachment bar, where did it come from? Was it with the
trailer or did you make it.
Did the mud guards come with the trailer or did you add them. As you
can
see I don't any.
Thanks,

Hi Keith
I did not like those original rubber straps
and removed them. I made new supporters
just like you described them. They are 2" /50 mm
thick wooden blocks (birch plywood board)
and I shaped them by CNC cutter.
They match well to the wing section
and between there are very soft self
adhesive stuf, douple layers.
If you like to get the drawing, please
contact me direct.
Because the pip pins let the supporters
to move a bit, I secure supporters to the
trailer also by extra 13 mm / =BD" bolt & nut.
There are still some movements between
wings and trailer supporters - to prevent any
damages in my first class wing surfaces
I cover the wings by kitchen film before
dropping them to the trailer.
The spars are secured by clamps tightened
by bolts - not only by pip - pins like original
factory trailer. I do not wanna get any damages
to the spars=B4main pip pin holes.
I have also some other modifications like
douple axle for security reasons. Look at the pics.
The riskiest part to operate Europa in my case
has been so far when pushing it to the trailer:
- I have almost destroyed my rudder by hitting it
to the back door of my van=B4s (it was open)
- main wheel gate opened when towing the trailer
(I was lucky Europa did not dropped to the road
because it was fixed by bolts in the tail wheel
and it was not on it=B4s side because I have extra
side supporters). To prevent this situation meet
me again I connected those turnbuckles keeping
gate up together by a strong rubber string with
hooks which prevent them to open spontaneously.
- tail wheel dropped from the rail and transponder
/DME antenna went broken
- tail wheel dropped yesterday again from the rail
and Dynon=B4s OAT sensor went broken and penetrated
through Europas stomach (so I have a similar extra hole
in my Europa=B4s fuselage as Ferg Kyle has his wing=B4s
leading edge!)
Personally I think the only almost safe way to carry
Europa on the roads is to carry it in a big enough lorry
/truck with closed coach. No towing at all. Only flying...

Ferg,
Hope the repair goes well.
There are "Colorworks" franchisees in Burlington and Oakville. These
people do repair work for the auto dealerships, fixing small dings, dents,
scrapes, blemishes etc.
They have mobile vans with the paint equipment, and can match colour and
airspray the damaged area.
May be the easiest way of getting the paintwork re-done.

Hi Ralph.
I had the same problem - 914/Expbus. Made contact with Nigel Charles - who
very kindly constructed my system.
It's based on the Expbus wiring diagram and built up to my specifications.
Nigel has since laid it out in the Europa Flyer (issue 45, June 2005).
If you don't have this magazine, I'm sure Nigel will send you a copy of the
diagram.
Hope this helps

Andrew,
Your pix of your outrigger looks a lot like mine...you'd previously
said that the interference you've encountered keeps the flaps and
ailerons from aligning...I'm not clear as to why that is the case.
What happens when you flip the wing over?
When you do so, be sure that your wingroot template is in place and
grabbing the TE of the flap and that the outermost TE of your aileron
is aligned w/ the BOTTOM of the wingtip and clamped to hold it in
place. My hunch is when this is done, alignment will be fine and you
won't experience any interference from the outriggers.
I did my wings simultaneously as I was concerned about maintaining
symmetry...

Copied from Devonstrut Newsletter:
Mode S Update
The current state of play with mode S was outlined by the CAA at a recent
National Air Traffic Management
Advisory Committee (NATMAC) meeting and posted on the PFA BB by Strut
members and PFA vice
chairman John Brady:
Stage 1: In March 2008 Mode S would be mandated everywhere above FL100 and
when flying IFR in
controlled airspace. From that date, no further installations of Mode A/C
transponders would be approved,
only Mode S. A transition period would be allowed.
Stage 2: At a later date to be defined, Mode S would be required for flight
in Class D airspace and in
Transponder Mandatory Zones which have yet to be defined. The first stage
would be implemented without
further consultation but there would be public consultation about stage 2.
Sense prevailing at last.
The PFA Bulletin Board has a more complete "debate".

Subject: | Re: Outrigger legs |
Perhaps I am splitting hairs trying to get everything perfect. When I
retract the flaps, the max up-travel is being limited by the nylon legs
coming in contact with the FL3 plate. After repeated flap operation, I
can even see a small ding mark on the nylon leg. This was a surprise to
me because I did not expect the nylon legs to function as any kind of
travel limit.
When I did the alignment, I painstakingly set the gap between the
flap's leading edge and the vertical closeout to be 5mm. But with the
nylon legs attached, that 5mm gap seems to be a moot point. I can't
retract the flaps to reach that 5mm gap anymore. It is more like 10mm.
This is the reason the flap and aileron don't perfectly line up now
because I did that alignment with the nylon legs off, and a 5mm gap.

Subject: | trailer wing support profile. |
Evening Duncan
I am up to Kemble tomorrow and will email you a pic tomorrow evening.
The
one I inherited allows both push and pull and is so strongly built (and
also
so heavy) you could move a 747. A bit of rope with 2 loops in the end
works
just a well if you only want to pull.
Pete

On a related matter, has anyone made a towbar that fits to hte
tailwheel?
Details please! Especially the detail of any latching mechanism.
