It is a sad day when any aeroplane crashes but it is even sadder when the
crash takes away two good friends and lovely people from their families and
the Europa fraternity.
I cannot believe that William and Paul are no longer with us and that we
will not see William at Sun'n'Fun or on DOTHS again.
My thoughts and sympathies go out to their families and all who had come
into contact with two nice gentlemen.

William Mills was due to lead the 6 Nations tour starting on 25 June. I am
fairly clear in my own mind that William would want it to continue in spite
of his tragic and devastating loss. I appreciate that not everyone will
necessarily agree. I am happy to take over the organisation, but have not
got any list of those who were thinking of joining the trip. I would be very
grateful to hear off list or by phone (01454 260542) from anyone who was or
is thinking of joining, with your views as to whether the trip should go on.
I am sending this sooner rather than later because of the potential need to
organise permission for flying in some of the countries likely to be
visited. I am off the phone from tomorrow morning until Sunday10 June but
hope to be able to pick up my emails meanwhile.
Regards, David Joyce

What a tragedy.
William Mills was a kind man who was generous with his time to help
other Europa builders both build and enjoy their aircraft.
I only got to know William in the last year, what a lovely man. He was
so enthusiastic about the Europa and lived to fly and improve his own
G-HOFC.
He was hugely experieced light aircraft pilot having spent many years in
gliding. I can't imagine what went wrong and it is imperative that we
find out.
A week ago William and I spent the Wednesday and Thursday together
taking splash mouldings of my wing roots so that Neville could make them
up for him and anyone who wanted them. We worked late on Wednesday night
and he spent the night at our house in Edinburgh. He returned to Wales
on the Thursday afternoon. We exchanged phone calls on this subject all
last week.
Both Fiona and I are stunned at the news. Our sympathy goes out to Diana
and all those effected by this sad event.

After being lucky enough to call them both friends for several years, I
can't believe they have both now gone. William was a character and very
experienced, Paul has been my pax on many occasions, and both were always
good fun at whatever destinations we reached, by plane or car.
I spoke to Paul on Tuesday evening about - of course - Europa's. My
sympathy goes to their families and friends who have lost friendly,
strong-willed men who were the very essence of the Europa Club.

Subject: | FW: mod no. 11698 Springs to replace bungy. |
Hi! ALL
Does anyone know the whereabouts of Ian Rickard? I've messaged him
twice now and no reply.
As you can see below there is some confusion over the direction of the
nose wheel suspension spring top hooks ..from forward or from aft.?
The drawing on the mod. indicates one way and photos I've seen shows the
otherway?
It is infinitely more suited for them to be inserted top hooks from aft
they sit better and in the event of needing them off .ever.the job would
be easier unless you used a
"hot spanner"!

Hi! Ian
I'm thinking you didn't get my last reply to your original message(copy
below) about spring directions dated 21st I basically thanked you for
your kind reply below but.. no offence intended ...it has confused me
more. In fact the drawing is clearly fitting them from the front and it
isn't possible to see which way from the actual pictures which I have.
Would you please :- a) advise if it is now acceptable to apply the top
hook of the springs from the aft direction with "handed springs"?
b) advise if anyone has formulated a
plan for simple removal in any future event ? (other than driving wedges
into each coil)

Bob Harrison G-PTAG
PS On a completely un related subject re:- your message just on the
Matronics site about your sled for rear access to the empennage ..I
would be concerned that the two rear legs at 1".1.5" section would crush
the inner skin of the floor, if it has proved OK for you a heavy builder
may need to check underneath outside? Perhaps a spreader foot on the
bottom of the legs would alleviate this liklyhood.? I say this because
I have noticed some minor damage on G-PTAG from my elbow resting when
re-fuelling.
Message dated 21st in reply to yours below:-
Hi! Ian
Thanks for the reply ..No offence but I'm now totally confused as to
what is a) correct b) acceptable for the handed springs to be fitted top
hook from the aft.?
Roger Cullum has faxed me a drawing clearly showing handed springs but
top hook attached from the forward side
Please define if it is acceptable attaching them from the aft position?
They are actually drawn as top hooks applied from forward looking aft.
Unfortunately I can't see from the faxed copy I have as to which way
they are fitted.

You are right and in fact that is the way they are drawn in the
documentation BUT the picture is wrong. The picture was of the
developements springs before we made them "handed". Thanks for the
reminder. I will get back on to Roger about getting it corrected on the

Hi! Ian
I'm in the middle of fitting my springs and they will fit much easier
and tidier with the top hooks fitted from the aft of the aircraft and
for removal at anytime in the future they will be infinitely easier
removed from this location. I can't see any reason for this being
unsound can you?

It is with sincere sadness that Kirsten and I read about the deaths of Will

We met William a couple of years ago when he, Dave B. and Graham spent a de

his gentlemanly nature like so many fellow-'europeans'. We feel privileged

David,
The loss of William has had a profound effect in our household. We are
deeply shocked that such a lovely guy could leave our lives so suddenly. I
am sure that those of us who have spent so many days in his company on
Europa trips, and doths, can only feel the same.
It is beyond my comprehension what awful circumstances could have
overwhelmed Williams vast experience.
Whilst I have no appetite for the 6 Nations trip, I would be prepared to
take on William's 'Last of the Summer Wine' in his memory, if that helps.
I would also like to organise a special memorial doth at some time in the
future for us dothers to express our respects for both William and Paul who
have supported these events so many times in the past. Regrettably I cannot
do that until July, but maybe would not be a bad thing.
Regards. Bryan

Dear Mr Lane,
I am sure by now that you have seen enough responses on the email forum to

Dave,
Thank-you for sharing this picture with us all: it shows William and Paul at
their convivial bests. Two thoroughly nice, helpful, decent friends have
been taken from us, and I'm sure everyone is as shocked as Liza and I.
Having got back to my computer today after a weekend away, I'm touched by
the depth of affection expressed on this list and elsewhere. I have even had
an email from Garsh - our guide for the Colditz break-ins - expressing his
sadness: he met William on the recent break-in and liked him enormously.
Paul and William's families are in all our thoughts at this time.
Regards to all,
Jeremy

Subject: | Emailing: William Mills G-HOFC Swiss Trip 2005 High Res Adjusted |
Hi! All ........Concerning the loss of G-HOFC with William Mills and
Paul Sweeting.
Tragedy indeed! I fail, for once, to find adequate words to align with
this accident. I messaged one of Williams friends to pass my condolences
to Diana and that I had previously had communications with Paul but
couldn't remember how or why.
I have now turned up his messages and of course he was as passionate as
myself with regards to who shall govern our country.
Attached is a photograph, taken by Ivor Phillips from my aircraft, of
William's aircraft over the Alps en-route to Raron in Switzerland it
has been on my office wall ever since. There is not a day gone by
without at some time reflecting on the trip and the people on it.
I have been reluctant so far to go public with a message of sympathy for
the families since I don't suppose for one minute they know me, but the
fact remains that I had shared such moments as dipicted here with a sure
gentleman who was thirsty for flying.
I do hope that those who are closer to the beareaved will be able to
pass my sincere thoughts and inadequate words of sympathy to them all.
(which of course at this time will seem so futile to them)
God bless them all and give them strength to celebrate both William's
and Paul's life and so go forward to the trying times ahead with proud
as well as heavy hearts.
Respectfully
Bob Harrison. G-PTAG
