Subject: | Re: MicroAir Radio |
The Microair built-in intercom is not voice activated (VOX) and the volume setting
is via a hole for a small screwdriver in the side of the case, so it can't
be adjusted without removing the radio from the panel. It's best to turn the
volume right down and use a separate intercom. That way, because it's not a VOX
system and always open mic, you will not have to listen to cockpit noise which
becomes a pain on long flights.
I have been using the MicroAir radio now for 5 years and would give it about 7/10
for performance.
As for the transponder, I was recently warned off them by ST Aviation, I believe
they have, or have had, some sort of technical problem.

So far as I know, you can't.
The Service Bulletins are issued by PFA to UK owners (current at the time
of issue, but also reissued last week) and are also contained in the PFA
Inspector's handbooks (SPARS). But not available on the PFA, Factory or Club
websites, as you have probably found. Odd that!
Maybe someone who has a scanner could post them.

Richard,
If you are desperate(!) we would be delighted to share your company and
travel in greater comfort than we are used too.
We are 1mile off M42 Junction 2, which is sort of close to the M5 or
could meet closer to the M5 (eg Webbs Garden Centre car park at
Wychbold).
However, there would be three of us (AMi + Anson) so please give
priority to any others that are more convenient to you.
Regards,
Duncan.

My condolences go out to the family of Ken Hill. I had the pleasure of
meeting Ken about 5 years ago when he was in Florida for the Sun N'Fun
fly-in. I offered to take him up in my Europa which he gratefully accepted.
We had a great flight and I turned the controls over to Ken. He was an
excellent pilot and a genuinely nice guy. We'll all miss him.

I think it's fantastic that your group is so diligent in getting to some interesting
places in Europe. I have been staying in Bunge (north part of island of
Gotland), Sweden with my friends. They are Gert and Inger Martinsson and they
own the entire airport facility! Anyway, they are having a big party with live
music, festivities, etc on June 30 through July 1 and they have asked me to invite
you to come if you can divert to Sweden. The island has consistently good
weather compared to most other Baltic states areas and might at least be a good
alternate. The identifier is ESVB and information is available on their website
Bungeflygfalt.se (not a very sophisticated site) and there is a little English
flag at bottom right of page to click on for those of us who can't really
read Swedish....I wish I could stay here for the whole summer but must return
on 21 June so won't be able to visit with the Europa crews but I hope you all
have a safe and enjoyable trip on you tour.

I have no slop between tailplanes but about =BC between trim tabs due to

Ira,
With every respect intended=85.. IMHO you should be advising all our
overseas
brethren to not only check for balance but also for SLOP BETWEEN EACH
TAILPLANE (Or STABILATOR as they call them.) and ensure it is
dimensionally
within permitted limits.

Sorry Chaps,
That would be UK only-based Europas are grounded
Europa owners in other countries should examine their tailplanes
as suggested for balance and then go about their business.

Hi William,
You tap on epoxy-glass-sandwich surfaces. If it does not sound right, its
wrong.
It's a good method for checking delamination.

Mike,
Ken had long range tanks, which could have been installed at the time of
the
crash. Here is a description of the tanks, which he posted about a year
ago:
The tanks are 6 gal. Evinrude Johnson "Duratank" from the local boat
dealer.
I use quick disconnect fittings from Europa and the pump is Facet 40105
from
Aircraft Spruce. The tanks are strapped to the wing tie bar for
restraint.
I last saw Ken's airplane in his garage about a year ago, not long after
his
return from a long trip, and the tanks were in the airplane at that
time.
Whether he left them there at all times, I don't know, nor can I comment
on
the crash worthiness of the tie-downs he used to hold them in place. I
am
only suggesting that the fire in this accident might not be
representative
of what is likely to happen to other Europas in a similar crash.
(Third-hand accounts I have heard of the accident say that the impact
was
nearly vertical.)

By the way, the discussion of missing oil appears to have produced
some misgivings regarding tilting the motor past 40deg and negative G. There
are of course restrictions which apply, but they should be worded so that
the direction of the force of gravity is included (probably assumed by the
maker).
The water in the swinging pail is a good example and most of us
understand that but there may be some relatively new to the sport who infer
other warnings. It is possible to perform a number of manoeuvres while
keeping the gravity vector as it is in still life, vertical to the
horizontal axes.
A perfect (if not 'the' perfect) example is to be found in the
following URL, courtesy of the inimitable Bob Hoover, idol of jet fighter
drivers and on occasion the public forum...........

Hi! Mike
I guess the "indestructible" tag you will have connected is a picture in
a promotional video where a 4X4 vehicle is demonstrated driving over the
main tank.
However I wouldn't expect the same tank to resist severe heat from a
fuel fire for very long, sorry if this causes you and your good lady
distress. Methinks the relatives of those lost in the tragedy will be
long time loosing the images from their minds. My sincere condolences to
all concerned.
It is worth a thought though that Spitfire fuel tanks were situated
above and forward of the pilots legs, necessary for weight and balance
considerations! My long range tank is situated behind the aft maintank
bulkhead but in the luggage bay, it is made of aluminium and held fixed
by steel tie straps to the trike maingear webs and the rear of the
headrests ! It is gravity filled through a large tap connected to the
maintank filler and drains down utilising a Europa hand squeeze ball
activating a siphon into the main tank. It vents into the main tank
vent.

I am sure you all recall Cliff and Betty Shaw died in a crash of their

this helps you and your wife.

Hi all,
I recall watching Ivan Shaw's impromptu demonstration of a Landrover driving
over a Europa fuel tank.
I remember thinking at the time, wondering if it would fare as well if it
was full of liquid. I suspect that the hydraulic pressure would easily
rupture the tank, no matter what it was constructed of.
I would offer up a hypothesis that a full tank in a Europa that was
subjected to a high G load would rupture, but one that has had fuel burnt
off would have sufficient airspace in it that could be compressed and not
cause the tank to burst.
Just a theory.

I am not sure about that theory. It is easier to crush an empty soda
can than a full one. Air is more compressible than liquid. When a full
tank is impacted, the liquid will transfer that energy to all surfaces
with little or no compression. A partial tank on the other hand will
compress until the air inside is squeezed to match the liquid. By then
the tank might have undergone enough bending stress to break it. Again,
just a theory.
