Thanks, Svein, and a really good point on the metal scratching the windows - that was also a concern. Kind regards, Jeremy -----Original Message----- From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Sidsel & Svein Johnsen Sent: 28 July 2007 06:56 Subject: Re: Europa-List: anr headsets <sidsel.svein@oslo.online.no> Jeremy, To your question: > I have heard it said that the Bose ANR headsets (Aviation X) aren't > brilliant with a Rotax - due to the frequencies being so much higher than > with a Lycosaurus. Can anyone out their comment? > I have used this headset for about two years, but have no experience with other ANR sets. To my ears they are as effective (and very noticeably effective) in my Europa with Rotax as in Cessna 172s and Piper Cherokees with Lycomings. Apart from the comfort of much less noise in the ears, a side effect is that you speak in a more normal voice on the radio - no need to "shout" to overcome noise. Also, using the cell phone via an adapter (I have SafetyCell's) for the headset's mike and headphones works fine. I have padded the metal going over the top of my head to avoid scratches in the window in bumpy air. Regards, Svein LN-SKJ

I borrowed a friends Bose headset, and was not that impressed due to the lack of passive noise reduction. I did not realise how much high frequency clatter the 912S generates. Checking the ANR headsets at Oshkosh last year, I liked the Sennheiser, had excellent passive reduction, but priced high enough to make me stay with my old Sigtronics set for the time being. Hi Jos, I have had Evans NPG+ in my plane for about a year now. No problems. I have 550 hours on the engine. At full throttle cruise at 5500 rpm, I have coolant temps of 85 to 95 deg C. It rarely goes over 100 deg C, perhaps during the climb, even in summer temperatures here. By the way, congratulations on your Shaw memorial cup award - well deserved. I have. I just get a list with one item on each line. I have taken the liberty of creating something much more readable in .pdf format. Of course it is non-editable, but I suggest that all other reports should come to me and I will add them to the list and republish - say twice a week. I am fairly certain that after the "tag your details onto the end of this" approach, several sets of info have been lost. I took this list from trevpond's email of this afternoon. To that end please check the attached .pdf and mail me direct with any omissions, changes or additions. The bad news is that when I post my results I will end up destroying the perfect symmetry of "no TP6 disbonding found" :-( Richard Holder G-OWWW High Cross 22/07/2007 19:02

The likelihood of surviving a low-level stall-spin incident is low at the best of times; I would not care to stack the odds against myself by adding a potential bomb to my baggage. Was the Evinrude tank restrained & plumbed-in in a way that minimised any possibility of fuel spillage on impact? I've not looked at the factory-supplied long range tank, but I'm sure it addresses these concerns. If you choose a different route to provide more fuel on board, you're conducting an experiment, the result of which, by definition, is unknown. What was the gross weight & CG of the aircraft at departure? Two adults (how heavy?) plus the extra fuel tank(s) might have put it over-gross or out of balance; maybe there was some baggage aboard too. Did the Pilot-in-Command conduct a weight and balance calculation before departure? Did the PiC review the options for dealing with engine-failure-after-takeoff before depature? I've just be re-validating my licence in C152s (a factory-built type with a fairly good safety record); much of the dual time was spent, not seeing if I could keep the dirty side down or find some distant waypoint, but on exploring my ability (a) to make sure the aircraft and its systems were fit for flight before committing to takeoff, and (b) to make decisions that would contribute to my survival in the event of unexpected failures. It was not assumed that this simple and basically safe type would refuse to bite if the pilot took his eye off the ball, and the same is true of all aircraft types. regards Rowland -- | Rowland Carson PFA #16532 http://home.clara.net/rowil/aviation/ | 760 hours building Europa #435 G-ROWI e-mail <rowil@clara.net>

Subject: Request for information - play in tailplane drive - Loctite
As part of the ongoing investigation into play in the tailplane drive line, we at E04 have carried out testing on a sample torque tube and TP9, using Loctite. We tested 638 and 603; in each of 3 cases the TP9 buckled but the Loctite held. To enable us to extend the work we should be most grateful if those builders who have used Loctite in this application would let me know how many hours they have flown since applying the Loctite, and if there had ever been any breakdown of the bond. If possible it would also be helpful to know how many landings since the application. Please send any replies to my work e-mail roger@europa-aircraft.com Many thsnks. Roger

Finklea, I am sorry indeed about your brother and Ken. I am always grateful for information which allows me to improve flight safety! I imagine your friend at the NTSB can not say anything now we do not already know about that fateful incident. As has already been mentioned here, the Rotax engine is not demonstrably better or worse in its safety design than other aviation engines. Its modern high performance alloys are offset a bit by the dual carburetor setup which allows a desynchrony failure mode. A full tank of gas does not help if it is switched off, or if junk clogs the filter or the carbs, or if the mechanical fuel pump fails, or if the airbox equalization tubes dislodge, etc, etc, etc. Please know that this group (for the most part) is grateful for information and will evaluate what is presented dispassionately. Condolences, -------- Ira N224XS Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=126431#126431

Subject: First Annual Europa Fly in Reminder
Hi all, Just a reminder that the first annual US Europa Fly in will be held at Rough River, Kentucky for an informal get together of flyers, builders and aviation buffs from August 31 to September 2, 2007 Rough River is part of the Kentucky State Park system with its own airport (2I3), camping facilities and a lodge, which is walking distance from the airport. The lodge offers both rooms and cabin style accommodation. Rough River offers walking trails, fishing, beach, golfing and a large marina that has rental craft of all sizes available. At the time of writing plenty of accommodation is available, however this quickly fills as the weather warms up. For more in Rough River take a look at http://parks.ky.gov/resortparks/rr/ http://www.roughriverlaketourism.com/acc.htm http://www.airnav.com/airport/2I3 For reservations call 800-325-1713. We are encouraging everyone to book early as this is labor day weekend and the accommodation will quickly fill up. Please let me or Jeff know if you are contemplating attending. It would help us better plan the event if we had an approximate head count. Paul can be contacted on paul.mcallister@qia.net Jeff can be contacted on topglock@cox.net
