Rob,
Are you actually using this relay? I suspect it isn't suitable for a DC load
(if you look at the laod terminal it says "AC" ). It probably uses a triac as
the control element - which depends on the voltage reaching zero to switch off.

that is the wise decision, (put in both mods together) (imho!)
Without the articulating sockets the pins would still see some bending
loads, which I don't feel happy about. You only have to hit a strong
thermal at 80kts with the flaps down and that would cause quite high
loads, which you WON'T feel on the flap lever btw,all the flap load goes
through the flap brackets, none into the push rod connected to the gear.

p.s. (I wouldn't anticipate too much extra problem with a tri gear
conversion but never tried it)

Troy,
I feel your pain. You are right in that your Mod 74 will require you
to reopen the wing and reset the pin depth if you do Mod 52 afterwards.
I just bit the bullet and ordered Mod 52 with the Mod 74 using your same
logic.
I have been holding out on informing the classic guys I know until I get
my mods accomplished. I am pretty sure most of them already have Mod 52
installed so their plight is different than mine. I have a tri-gear
Classic which needs the upholstery tore out and my plywood ribs cut down
etc. to complete the transformation.

I found out from Roger Bull that if you don't put the MAUW 1370
fuselage
sockets on at the same time as you do mod 74, you would have to go
BACK into
the wing again to adjust the wing lift pins if you wanted to
incorporate the
rest of Mod 52 at a later date. I had thought I could just put the
tie bar
in only with the existing fuselage sockets and the new mod 74 pins
and
retro fit the rest of Mod 52 later. (Or at least that's what I
understood in
a phone conversation today with him.)
So here I am in the middle of painting it and now taking it back
apart!!
What are the rest of you classic foam wing guys here in the states
going to
do about these mods?
What if someday I need to do a trigear conversion. Will having the
tiebar in
the baggage area hinder the installation of the trigear legs to a
great
degree?

I do not believe that Winter supplies any other than described.
The OEM that actually manufactures the connector might, but it might
be easier to use brass or plastic fittings to change the tubing size

The solid state relay you point to has a max current rating of 25A.
This is about 1/4 that needed to function as a true master contactor

John & fellow Europaphiles,
Darn John, now you make me feel real bad that I can't make it. I'd dearly like
to be there for your entire presentation. Unfortunately, I have to be on an
airliner for Zurich, Saturday morning September 1st. Since this is our 35th
Anniversary trip, it's not something I can shuffle around and still keep peace
in the family. I want to ensure that my better half continues to support my
aviation habit, so we go to Switzerland.
I hope we North American Europa owners and flyers can make this an annual event
as I plan to fly N914XL to Rough River next year if it goes again.
Y'all have a great time. Someone be sure to take pics and post them somewhere
on Europa-Owners.org
Now, are there any Swiss Europa aviators who would care to visit with some U.S.
Europa aviators? I will be arriving in Zurich early on the morning of September
2nd. We will be driving to Basel on the 3rd.
Good building and great flying,

Mod 73 list is getting a bit big to paste into an email so I have
attached a table in a Word file herewith.
Anyone wanting a different format let me know and I will do my best.
So far from 37 who have reported there are over 7,700 flying hours in
total (plus quite a few who haven't listed hours flown) and only one
disbonded TP6. No major problems found on doing the mod and about one
third had to replace the pip pins with longer one's.

In re: tie bar and Tri-Gear conversion
An already installed tie bar will be the least of your problems. By far the
most frustrating, tedious, difficult, messy (add a few more modifiers here)
part of constructing a Tri-Gear is the installation of the main gear leg
sockets. Compared to that effort, removing the tie bar is child's play.

Will do.
I've also a nice scratch on my port wing, which would have been ideal for
John to demonstrate on - one of the joys of sharing a hangar with 172's.
Now if someone knows how to fix a constant speed Woodcomp, I'll bring that
along too.

Trev,
I was thinking of letting the list run for another couple of weeks
before giving up on it then sending the results to Engineering. I think
that it will fairly well have served it=92s purpose by then.
I do rather suspect that or someone at the PFA monitors this site and
may well pick it up anyway. Something I posted on here did get back to
me via Francis once upon a time.

Further to my cry for help,... fixed the Manifold Pressure problem a
leaking connector at the "tee". Does this mean that the carb balancing
done will be now "off track "?
Made serious attempts at solving the vac gauge failure to register the
vacuum. It works when sucked by mouth on the "v" pipe (I think it was !)
but nothing on the other pipe (what does it do ?)
At what stage do I suspect the new Rapco pump isn't actually pulling

And they work slower with a vacuum cleaner connected in lieu of the

Thanks in anticipation of any suggestions.

John,
I have a scratch in a low area of my inside windshield that I would be
delighted to offer up as a ginny pig. Just how far could this
demonstration go anyway? Under my wings and fuselage also could use a
good buffing. Do you charge by the hour? ;)
See you there...

Subject: | Araldite "expiry" - shear test |
There was a thread some time back concerning Araldite 420 and whether it was any
good after the "expiry date" on the can. My Araldite has a listed expiry date
of April 21, 2006. The gist of the thread was that as long as the inert materials
were not mixed and were stored properly, the Araldite should work fine.
Several people suggested testing the bond on scrap to determine if "old" Araldite
would hold.
In order to test the adhesion integrity of Araldite 420 past expiry date on the
can, I set up a test as follows:
I cut two pieces of scrap F04 PVC foam approximately 3 inches wide and 10 inches
long. I coated both sides of each piece with micro slurry, then laid up two
pieces of bid at 45 degree bias on each side (similar to the construction of
the aft bulkhead). The two pieces (I will refer to each piece as a mini-bulkhead)
were laid up on June 10 and 12, 2007. After more than a month of post-cure,
I mixed a batch of Araldite 420 from containers opened on July 25, 2007, and
mixed in flox per the manual direction. I used this mixture to bond the two
previously laid-up foam/glass mini-bulkhead pieces together with a 6 inch lengthwise
overlap on each piece.
After nearly two weeks of post-cure, I clamped the glued-together sandwich to a
piece of half-inch plywood on my shop bench. The piece was clamped in such
a fashion that when weight was applied to the end most distant from the bench,
force would be applied so as to try to pull apart the bond between the two pieces
(in other words, the test of the bond was in tension rather than compression).
The first test involved hanging 23 lbs of weight 2 inches from the outer end of
the piece (8 inches from the edge of the plywood on the shop bench). The bonded
sandwich deflected approximately an inch, with no sign of delamination or
failure of the bond. The second test upped the weight to 36 lbs. A slight additional
deflection occurred, with no delamination or failure of the bond. Finally,
57 lbs. of weight was added. The piece deflected several inches and held.
A slight cracking noise was heard, then the piece failed, approximately a
quarter inch beyond the edge of the plywood away from the clamps. The piece
did not fail all the way through, but remained deflected in approximately a 40
degree bend. The fiberglass layers held the parts together, and when removed
from the clamps, some flexing was required to break the part completely in two.
The Araldite bond remained completely intact.
I then took the remaining piece and clamped it in a steel vise bolted to another
bench. I then pulled on the upper mini-bulkhead piece as hard as I could, and
was able to make the sandwich fail. Once again, the failure occurred just
beyond the point of clamping, and the failure was limited to a break in the bid/foam
laid-up piece. The Araldite bond again remained completely intact.
I don't have the math or engineering skills to calculate the forces in the my (admittedly)
informal test, but it was comforting to see that a properly laid up
fiberglass/foam sandwich will fail before the Araldite bond. As one poster
to the earlier thread questioned, is there a "life" to the other materials we
are using in our planes, such as fiberglass cloth? It seems that if anything
on my plane is going to break, the Araldite bond will be the last thing to go.
I feel pretty comfortable using my Araldite as is.
Any comments to this post would be appreciated, and if anyone would like digital
pictures, I could try to upload them.
Thanks,
George Powell

Subject: | Missed email mesages |
I must apologize, but my server 'ra.ca' had lost control of its machinery
this last weekend and in the process of countering spam lost all emails to
me from Saturday 04AUG to yesterday, Monday 07Aug. 7, 07 inclusive.
If you had sent me critical advice or legal information during that
period, I will not have got it and cannot therefore respond..........
Sorry

Subject: | Re: More help required.....Vac gauge problem |
Bob
imho the best type of vacuum pump is one that sucks electrons through a
lump of silicon and displays the resulting confusion on a screen!
Weighs less and doesn't pack up quite so regularly!
