Thank you Troy, but as I cannot remove the leg from the wing, I have to
find a freezer big enough to put the whole wing in!
Regards
Remi
I had the same problem getting the nylon out to get the forks painted. I
put them
in the freezer. The next day they fell out when I picked them up.

The mod calls for etching primer
What is etching primer and what does it do?
And what is ACF whateveritis that prevents corrosion? Roger told me that it
is like WD40 so is WD40 a substitute?
Thanks

Rather than using a large freezer try using either ice or dry ice to
cool the area.

I had the same question but found both at Aircraft Spruce. I have in front of
me "Tempo Aviation Self Etch Primer" and "ACF-50" Anti Corrosion Formula, both
from Spruce. As I recall, the are less than $10 per spray can.

Thanks for the input. Two "gotchas" have been brought to my attention,
fortunately before first flight (which unfortunately is not imminent) .
Being an analog guy in a digital world I made the erroneous assumption that
solid state relays don't care about waveform. OOPS. Worse yet, I missed
the fact that starter current is just a tad higher than the steady state
cruise load. "Lectric Bob's remotely operated battery switch (9042-100) is
looking like a really good device for my purposes.

Rob,
Are you actually using this relay? I suspect it isn't suitable for a DC load
(if you look at the laod terminal it says "AC" ). It probably uses a triac
as the control element - which depends on the voltage reaching zero to
switch off.

Subject: | BATTERY MASTER SWITCH |
Hi Ferg,
I used an EV200 in my Europa and it worked fine until I had my "hit by
lighting" incident. It turned the electronics into a small charred spec and
obviously didn't work anymore. Of course this left me flying at 9500' with
the master contactor turned off. Fortunately I have my system set up with
an essential buss that can be feed directly for the battery. I guess it was
some real world testing.
Anyhow, as part of my repairs while I was "on the road" so to speak I
installed a contactor from a NAPA auto parts store for $16.50 and there it
has stayed from that day to this. It was smaller and lighter than the EV200
and it didn't cost $90... I assume that if I get hit by lightning again
(perish the thought) then it will probably continue to work.
I did try a solid state 1600A device for a while. It worked fine until the
engine kicked back and it went the same way as the EV200 electronics. Pity
really because it only weighed a few ounces and I didn't have to pay a one
amp penalty when it was energized.
So, in conclusion, go down to the local NAPA store and by a low tech
contactor or a battery isolator switch, sometimes simple is best.
Paul

I should be very wary of having one pin that is too short to fit on either
side. Better to get two longer pins, so that it doesn't matter which way
round you fit them. While I know you are conscientious and would never make
a mistake, someone else later in NY's life might fit the shorter pin in the
side that needs a longer one, with potential consequences that I don't need
to spell out.

MIke

Two more to report. Tony Kay did both his a/c and mine this week. No dramas
and I have updated the table below accordingly. Hours and pip pin details
for 'AY not available at the time of writing. Note(1): 'NY needs one longer
pin - other side was long enough as original. Tony also reports a
conversation with Francis Donaldson who wanted to hear first hand reports
from inspectors in the field about any signs of disbonding or other problems
observed. Apparently the same conversation indicated (as I understand it)
likely movement by the PFA towards approving the use of Loctite to secure TP
9 and 12's onto the torque tube.

WD40 is definitely not a substitute. It degrades over a few months then
causes abrasion or corrosion or both, (as I understand, it degrades to
silica in some circumstances, particularly in electrical environments).
ACF50 or LPS1 2 or 3 are like the old Finnegan's Waxoil and leave a
protective self healing film.

Ok is there a commonly available substitute for both remembering that
bringing hazmat from the US to Colombia is a little costly?
Thanks

All,
I wonder if Poly Fiber's Tubeseal can be used as well as a substitute for
the ACF50. It says on the container
" containing a very fine preservative oil, mil spec. l-21260, which has a
characteristic of climbing the tube wall and spreading over the entire
surface to provide lasting protection. Prevents rust and corrosion inside
aircraft tubing structures."
Another set of questions:
The instruction of Mod 72 states:
" Thoroughly coat the insert with etch primer, including the bore, and allow
to dry completely."
I am not sure about :
A- How do you uniformly coat the inside of the inserts (and probably the
inside of the tubes too) ?
B- Don't you scrape the primer off again when you drive the insets into the
tubes and therefore make the coating useless?
Wonder how others have done this.
Regards

That prop looks really mean Bob ! very much like the Rospeller. Should
really grab hold of the air mate. Can't wait to hear your comments
about the performance of your new set-up as opposed to the old one so
hurry up and get those mods finished.

Hi Bob
The aircraft looks great, hope you get enough cooling from that cowl design
in all this hot weather you seem to be having. You obviously didnt take
global warming into account in your calculations :-)
We are presently in Vancouver on the second leg of our honeymoon.
All the Best

Hi! Alan and Kate
Me too! But I'm used to controlling heat problems ! The ducting entrance
is a splash from Ivor Phillips who has copied Peter Kembers Mod. So it's
origin is at the top G-TOPK !
Hope you are enjoying Britsh Columbia. WE did the Inside Passage ferry
cruise Port Hardy to Prince Rupert and saw some Pacific sunsets. Went
past Bella Bella a remote fishing town without any roads to it across
the wilderness, then travelled up the Skeena Valley to Jasper over the
glacier ice fields (I think only discovered early 1900's ) and the
Athabaska falls onwards to Lake Louise and Banff. Saw the Indians
spearing salmon, thought they were clever until I realised they never
missed .......because there were so damn many they couldn't! Our trip
also encompassed Penticton and Hells Gate ! Fabulous country and views,
we are so jealous. Have a great time.
