May be this is because I always inflate to 30-35 psi. This provides a better prop clearance and better directional control. I do not think it causes more bouncing on landing. I suggest you try with higher pressure. Hope that helps. Duncan It will be somewhat more than finger tight if it engages the nylon lock ring. I've never known a nyloc nut you could do up with fingers whatever size! I've just pinched mine as they bottom on the washer well after they engage the nylon lock. The torque to drive the pin through the nylon lock is considerable .On the starboard wing I had to bed a secondary piece of metal into the construction since for some error on the alignment of the flap hinge bracket and bedded both washers into position with redux curing over night with the lift pin well greased. On removal of the pins I made extensive degreasing efforts. On each location I made a small wooden hard wood wedge with a gradual slope to measure the position of the pip pin hole and marked the C/L of the pip pin when the wedge became tight.( ensuring it was entered from the same direction as the marking was done initially.) I only did one rig with redux in place and the lift pins were bang on the right position. My wings always needed to be held aft at the tips to fully engage the aft lift pins and they still do. I must confess I used Redux on the pin threads and female threads allowing to cure overnight and the pin stayed put whilst I cranked the nyloc nut up. (thankfully). I'm thinking ....what if it is ever necessary to remove /change the lift pin? This is the second time it has been changed. First conception is a home made hexagon ring spanner from a piece of stainless sheet suitably fixed in the hole and enclosed for ever ! It would be of minimal weight and save much hassle in the event...........! The increase of pressure is one of the options i've been thinking of. Just being somewhat reluctant to go above 20 psi, because, as John Wigney said, it might make the landings even more interesting than at present. Today i splayed the legs with a jack, and after some experimenting as to the amount of splaying, kept the shape by positioning a 10mm steel tube between the vertical sides of the UC leg just proximal to the tyre. The tube was fixed with a bolt at each end. So far it seems to work fine. The original tire supplied with my kit was also the old 800 x 6. I operate off a paved runway and the tires rubbed the sides of the gear legs on landing. The higher pressure gave me a little extra clearance between the gear leg and the tire. I replaced that tire with a 700 x6 6ply rating. It makes the a/c ground handling much better. Jim Brown N398JB ----- Original Message ----- From: Niels Kock To: europa-list@matronics.com Sent: Wednesday, August 08, 2007 2:46 PM Subject: Re: Europa-List: removal of nylon outrigger legs Remi. I encountered the same problem in a similar situation. Your intellect will not serve you well here, you have to resort to brute force: Put a bolt fitting the axle holes of the fork through the 2 holes. The bolt must be long enough to extend at least 3-4 centimeters either side of the wheel fork. Then strike the bolt with many small strikes parallel to the leg, on alternate sides of the fork, and you will see the fork moving gradually off the leg. At least I did. Now, I have a problem: I've just put on a new mono-tyre, McReady Air-trac 8.00 x 6. pumped to 15 psi. It turns out that the tyre is in contact with the sides of the wheel leg, emitting sgueals during taxy like a couple of fighting piglets. It is not only the pensive looks from stewardesses and other impression-worthy groups connected to aviation that bothers me, when I pass them by, squealing insanely, it is also the palpable temperature of the sides of the tyre after taxying to the hangar. Imagine the loss of face and money, if the squealing progress comes to an abrupt halt with an almighty thunderclap from a burst inner tube in front of an awe-struck crowd! Apart from parting with another 100 =A3 buying a 7.00 x 6 tyre, is there any possibility of splaying the UC-leg about one mm each side? I already have untightened the central bolt through the hub a couple of threads. To no avail. Any suggestions? Hi! Ron My current assessment is that it is unlikely. I believe the uplift of the ingoing air temperature is quite high without an intercooler from info. provided by others. I'm expecting in the region of a drop of 20 deg summer and 25 deg. winter But from the original figures there's still lots of temperature put in the air by the turbo. However since it's the venturi effect and humidity which causes the icing on the carb throat until mine flies in the next two weeks I won't be sure. It is a very relevant consideration, a friend pranged on Saturday, he had been thermaling ,engine off (not a Europa) re-started to land and decended maintaining 200deg on his cylinder heads when he needed the throttle to clear power lines to land the engine quit. Finished up in a sweet corn/maize field totalled but both walked away. That's in the UK with present humidity levels ! So much attention needs applying when doing mods 73 and 74.
