RE: Europa-List Digest: 9 Msgs - 08/10/07,I`m interested to know where
you got the mechanical switch and
what amperes it will switch..

Try any automotive spare part shop like
http://www.adita.fi/default.asp?file=101
I Think I hae a modell 1000-0040.
For example rally cars use it for emergency use.
After crash rescue service can switch off all the power.
Mechanical switch is installed outside the car body in that case.
Why not in planes also (I have not)?
Amperes; you can be sure it handles "enough" . I have similar
type switch in my speed boat and no problem to start V8 454 cin.
If you have two accus you can have two channel model - so you
are able to use accu #1 or accu #2 or both of them together.
You use the switch by removable "key", which is usually red.
If the key is in your pocket, it is difficult to start the engine
- that is also extra safety.

Subject: | Anyone willing to test for happy CG? |
Wondering if anyone willing to test for happy CG using following test. It
works well on models, and I see no reason it would not work well on full
size?
Power off and trim 5 knots over stall and note position of stick as far as
pitch, dive to around maneuvering speed and put stick back to 5 knot above
stall position.
If nose pitches up, it is nose heavy beyond happy
If it slight noses up, probably a very happy position
If dives, too tail heavy
It would be interesting for this test to be performed at different
weights, and with both short and long wings.
Any takers?

Hi! All who would be likely to attend the Swiss Rally (lucky sods!)
Below is Varena's reply to my request.
Hi Bob
What a pity you don't come to Lausanne. Hope to see you again next
year in where ever our fly-in will take part.
To answer your question: yes, camping beside the airfield is
possible.
The weather forecast for the weekend is o.k., so far, I hope it
won't change. We really don't need any more rain.....

Ron
We have been running the 914 with an intercooler approx 600 hrs here in
Florida. We have not had any problems with carb ice.
I do have a few observations about the subject.
In normal cruise settings I use 33"MP and 5300 RPM. There is enough heat
going into the airbox at this setting from the turbo, that there has been no
problem with carb ice. However I can see that if one were to spend time in
the pattern at low throttle settings below 28 or 29" of MP carb ice could be
a possibility.
I also can see that things will be different if one has a fixed pitch prop
installed. I would think that since the MP would be tied to the RPM , in
pattern work a very good possibility that carb ice could happen.
Sorry for the ramblings...but your question got me to thinking about how
carb ice could happen in the 914.

Subject: | Down for the count - fuel tank leak |
After having the aircraft down for awhile with the fuel tank drained to avoid having
stale gas present I noted a leak upon gassing it up. I was going to bring
it over to Phoenix Composites to have the prop rebalanced. It looked like
it was coming from the lower feed boss where the big piece of short hose is clamped
on. I was in a hurry and going on vacation in 2 days for a few weeks.
I didn't want to deal with it then so re-drained the tank to re-address it later.
Upon re-gassing it up upon return the gas started flowing out at a rate of about
a third as fast as I was pouring it in! Upon inspection it was determined that
it was coming from a crack in the tank near the bottom of the saddle section
reserve side where a fiberglass layup support is attached. It appears that
the strapping has acted as a stress raiser along with expansion and contraction
in the AZ heat.
In any case it looks like it may have to be sawzall time for the top of the cockpit
module for repair. Has anyone gone through a repair to a fuel tank an a
fully built aircraft? What was the routine? I am not looking forward to this
and am possibly considering just parting the aircraft out. I could have been
out flying and pumped all the fuel out of the reserve return side in a matter
of about 10 minutes if I didn't light it off.
Feed back appreciated
