If you look forward to checking your List email everyday (and a lot of you have
written to say that you do!), then you're probably getting at least $20 or $30
worth of Entertainment from the Lists each year. You'd pay twice that for a
subscription to some lame magazine or even a dinner out. Isn't the List worth
at least that much to you? Wouldn't it be great if you could pay that amount and
get a well-managed media source free of advertising, SPAM, and viruses? Come
to think of it, you do... :-)
Won't you please take a minute to make your Contribution today and support the
Lists?

Again, I want to say THANK YOU to everyone that has made a Contribution thus far
during this year's List Fund Raiser!! These Lists are made possible exclusively

Subject: | Trip to Australia 2009 |
18 months ago Tim Weert floated the idea of a group of Europas flying from
London to Melbourne on the 75th Anniversary of the Great London to Melbourne
(McRobertson) Air Race of 1934, won by one of 3 specially designed (& built
in 9 months!) twin engined racing aircraft - the De Havilland Comet. Twenty
aircraft took part and 11 finished. There were 5 compulsory stops - Baghdad,
Allahabad, Singapore,Darwin and Charleville, which makes something close to
a straight line on a conventional map of the world.
The key planning decisions so far are:
(1) That each plane would have only one pilot, the other seat being taken up
by a specially constructed long range fuel tank containing around 110 litres
to give sufficient range to be able to avoid places where the natives are
not friendly!
(2) It will be a one way trip with the planes being shipped back in
containers from Oz
(3) We should go in March to get the best overall weather along the route
(4) Although keen to follow the original route as nearly as possible,
Baghdad will be avoided!
(5) We are looking at somewhere between 14 and 17 days of actual flying,
depending a bit whether the whole fleet is 914 equipped or not.
Tim has since had to back out because of work and family pressures,
and at the moment it looks as though two planes only are likely to go. We
would very much welcome any additional person looking for a real challenge.
There is sufficient necessary planning and preparation that I estimate
participation needs a decision before the end of the year. If possibly
interested please contact me off list.

Subject: | Stall warning during high altitude tests |
All
I visited couple of days ago QNH altitude 16200 feet
(it was flight level 150). Even the last 1000 feet took
only 4 minutes to climb. My engine is a free aspirated
Rotax 912S. My purpose was to find a max usable
ceiling service. Europa would have gone happily higher
but that altitude was enough for me personally. Temp
was around 15 degrees below freezing but climate in
the cocpit was still comfortable.
When I started to descend, I got immeadiately a stall
warning. I have an Europa factory stall warning kit with
audio-visual warnings. System was activated during
whole descending and even in the hangar one hour
after landing. Next day it was OK again.
What was that? Is there any other explanation than
ice formation in the pipe from the wing leading edge
to the pressure probe?
I did not feel good when listening half an hour a buzzer
and watching big blue high bright led which tried to tell
me I am stalling...I was not brave enough to switch that
uncorrect warning off.
Regards, Raimo

Raimo
it probably was ice. When the airplane is cold soaked at hi altitude as
soon as you descend into warmer air the water vapour in the air will
condense on the airframe and of course freeze.
That is my guess. It used to happen to gliders high in wave over
Scotland. I remember looking out at the wings and seeing frost forming
and outlining the spar and ribs.

Subject: | Uk pilots only - DOTH Friday? |
Hi Bob
It is getting quite foggy here this evening. The forecast for Lyneham
tomorrow indicates that the fog might not clear until late morning
(assuming it does clear at all). With the relatively short daylight
window after the fog clears we might be OK for a trip up to Panshanger
but up to you may be a bit ambitious. Maybe another time.

Hi Nigel
What about a DOTH at Wycombe Air Park ? Voucher in Flyer.
Restaurant is good.
If you decide on Panshanger let me know and I will drive
over - It will take longer to open up the hanger and pull
out G-OWWW than it will be to drive there ! I didn't make
Monday as i was otherwise engaged.

Hi All,
I know this has been asked before but I never really got the details that I
need. I am grateful for the replies when we last discussed it however. I
don't want to start a big debate and beat the dead horse again but I need
relief. The questions revolve around changing the stranded or braided inner
thottle cables to solid ones to prevent possible kinking. Can the folks that
have already done this tell me the following? I am mostly interested in the
diameter of the solid wire that others have used successfully. Wicks has
.055" that should work with the factory outter housings, which is the
preferred in my opinion. Or, they also have .075" wire with thier 3/32" ID
housing. Which size is the best for routing without binding?

Hi TROY,
I replace the cables by stainless steel piano wire dia. 1.5 mm (about 0.059
inch) and use a graphite grease into the sleeve, in France winter is cold
currently -5 to -10Celcius possible, this solution is perfect for me.
