This is a knock off of the COZY canard trim, modified to suit. It attaches
to the push rod arm on the existing bolts
so no mods or extra hardware are needed, other than the hole for the bell
crank bolt in the seat back and the four holes
to mount the servo. Complete assembly weighs in at 330grams.

Horse shoe spring is 6 layers of 27000 psi UNI kevlar. 5 inches in diameter
(a CD is a good template)
with a 30mm tail to allow for mounting

      Arm mounting bracket is 3mm x 20mm alloy angle, with another 3mm x 40mm
plate alloy 100mm long with a 20 degree bend towards
the floor of the aircraft. six rivets and 420 hold the two together. the
other end of the spring is also 3mm x 20mm angle.
Spring is clamped in at both ends and 420'ed in place.

Bell crank is supported by 3 bearings, and has 3 positions for spring mount
point to allow for 1:1, 1.5:1 and 2:1 gearing
of the servo. Alloy for bell crank is 11mm cold rolled solid billet, which
was milled to size, (hand cutting was just tooo hard)
angle of crank is 25 degrees, but i think about 20 would be better. Mount
hole is 45mm above the small step under the seat for
      the rudder cables

servo is ray allen with 1 inch travel.

attachment from spring to crank is 3/16 rod with nylock nuts. servo to crank
is with the supplied threaded rod and ends

Spring can support weight of controls with cockpit module on its side. If
control weight is "dropped" onto spring at neutral
position controls rebound to "center" position.

The spring and crank can be inserted through the port side spar hole. Servo
and crank adjustment can be done through fuel tank
      access ports.

Any comments, thoughts, other issues I am not aware of.

      regards

      craig

Sorry for the delay as my computer is acting up at the shop.
I see you have the 45 degree nozzle on the lower left exit from the
pump. You're correct to presume that the nozzle need not be changed
out. If you can bend the lower nozzle upward so that both cooling tubes
go through the V in the ring mount that will give you about another 15
mm clearance. At about 30 mm, with heat shielding, you will be able to
get a long service life out of your lower hose.

        Bud and Richard and David,
        Many thanks for your responses.

Unfortunately I don't have a Rotax agent nearby; I would have been
very happy to have them fit the mount!

Bud, the bent nozzles from the water pump housing seem to already have
a bend of around 40 degrees, certainly not 80 degrees - 2 photos
attached with the standard Europa XS exhaust system temporarily fitted.
The hose from the lower nozzle is disconnected. The clearance between
the end of the lower bent nozzle and top of the silencer is 15 mm - is
that sufficient? To increase the clearance a bit it seems I would have
to rotate the bent nozzle upwards a bit.

I just wanted to clarify what you mean by an 80 degree bent nozzle - I
presume you mean bent to nearly a right angle. If so, my engine doesn't
have those. Maybe they have chenged them on recent engines? My engine
serial no is 5647439. So I presume, if I have not misunderstood you,
that I don't need to change the nozzle? Is that correct?

Many thanks for your help - I really appreciate your response and
      advice.

        Kind regards,
        Keith Hickling,
        New Zealand.

          Kieth,
Your fun has just begun. I have my Rotax dealer do my ring mounts,
and it's worth it. When they make the mods, the warranty is not in
question. However, if you want to do it yourself.

Remove the water pump cover and the lower pilot side hoses.
You've done the hard part of moving the ignition harness.
The starter can stay on, but access is better with it off.
The carbs don't have to be taken off, but it can help.

At this point getting the ring mount on is easy.
Next you may find that the ring mount doesn't fit snugly. Rotax
sells a shim kit for the mount which allows a proper fit. See their
parts list. Torque as indicated in the maintenance manual. The ring
mount should not be flexed to install.

Unless you are changing the exhaust system from the stock Europa,
you must replace the water pump housing lower left (looking forward)
bent nozzle from a 80 degree to a 45 degree. This will allow sufficient
clearance to position the muffler as the Fire Wall Forward (Euroopa XS)
instructions direct. To remove the 80 degree nozzle, heat the housing
carefully and rotate off the nozzle. I use a propane torch, and heat
the housing uniformly (about 400 degrees F) until the nozzle just starts
to move easily and maintain constant temp after the nozzle starts to
rotate and continue the uniform heat until off. A nice piece of 1/2
inch stock stuck in the hole works well. Do not cock the nozzle or you
will destroy the threads. If you have to, use a small pipe wrench. It
is best to remove both the nozzles on that side for ease of installation
and removal. You have to rotate the upper nozzle to turn the lower.
(It's never easy!) You might as well take off the one you loosened to
ensure a good seal. That's your choice. Clean the threads and
reinstall with loctite 243 in the orientation which will allow the two
lower pilot side hoses to fit through the V in the ring mount support.
When you reinstall the water pump housing, replace your gasket and if
necessary the compression washers. Please note the stainless bolt goes
at the 6 o'clock position and make sure you have a good seal with a new
or cleaned up compression washer. That bolt has coolant running around
it and it will leak if not done correctly. Torque as indicated. Do not
over torque. Again, consult with the Rotax parts list for the 45 degree
      part number.

Reinstall the coolant lines and protect your hoses with a heat
shield. For better service, go to a racing catalogue and order aluminum
heat sleeve to finish off the installation. Get enough heat sleeve to
      do the oil lines also.

Once the engine is modified as indicated above, the FWF assembly is
straight forward. Some have left the coolant lines below the ring mount
when using the older rounder style muffler, but even then, the muffler's
heat destroys the lower hose. One guy rotated the 80 degree nozzle aft,
and put a very long hose on the nozzle to clear the muffler. Not very
neat, and made mounting the engine more of a pain.

It takes a long day to do it the first time. Go slow and take your
time, don't force anything and enjoy yourself. It took longer to do
this email than modify the pump housing.

            Merry Christmas everyone.

Can someone please tell me how to fit the ringmount for the 912
uls? So far I've disconnected the rear mount of the ignition modules so
the mount can slide under that, and the bottom 2 coolant hoses, but I
still can't get the mount past the starter motor. Or, if I lift it over
the starter motor first then it won't get past the alternator. Is it
necessary to remove the starter motor, or can the ringmount somehow be
manipulated past it? It's a bit like those Chinese puzzles designed to
      drive you mad!

            Many thanks,

You can order them through me or Europa. I think I have about 4 left
and if memory serves they are about $5 each. Or go to the Cohler
Products Company website and see all the nifty QDs available. I use
both their brass and plastic QDs and they are very good. They even have
multiple hookups. I have had a leak, in one for fuel and one of the
small ones for static so do check them.

      Hi Duncan,
I've been thinking along the same lines - however I can't find
anywhere central, with hard runways and a good restaurant, offering
      free landings.
How about going mad and paying for Leicester? Always a good social spot.
      I suggest 1200hrs as usual,
      Cheers, Paddy

      Hi Craig,

The only thing that occurs to me is that sometimes after a few years
the tank bulges and you have to move the aileron push rod to the other
side of the crank so the push rods will clear the bulging tank.

If you ever have to do this then I suspect that will interfere with
where you have mounted your trim servo.... perhaps not, and if you
tank never bulges then it won't be an issue.

      Cheers, Paul (The misplaced Aussie)

Nice job Craig. It to cold here in California to do any lay-ups so I am building

        POPS' KNOCKDOWN FUSELAGE CRADLE http://members.bellatlantic.net/~cpops/cradle.htm

The only problem is he didn't publish any measurements other than the lenght
of the 2x4's. I built it yesterday, but it was not right. So last night I took
a piece of paper and figured out the measurements. I figured out that the
base needs to be 18 inches and that the side 2x4 needs to be at 18 inches also.
That will give me the right angle. So I can move the canoe to any position
I need during the build. Flat, 45 degrees or 90 degrees.

I'll look into doing the fuel tank spacer today or tomorrow. Then the servo.
I need to figure out where I put it. I took it out of the aileron and put it
back it it's box, but where I put the box is the question.

I like your arrangement, but I still think that attaching it to the push-pull
rod might work. I'll try it and see. I'll use regular UNI and do a ten ply
layup. I'll us a four inch circle. I foud on ole Planters can that I'll tape
up with duck tape and wax it then do the layup on it. I'll cut a hole in a board
so the can is flat. I'll let you know my outcome. where is OZ are you?
About ten years ago I picked up a tuna boat north of Auckland. I had fifteen
days there. I traveled all over the north island. I had a great time. I joined
the flying club and flew from the ninety mile beach to the south shore.
I tried to fly over the channel but the government would not allow me to go because
of the single engine and WX. When I win the Lotto I'll come back.

      Hi! Duncan
I intend flying tomorrow but have a few "observer" flights to make so
don't wish to go too far , I will be at Wickenby (where there's improved
facilities ) or I could include Sandtoft for a drop in around noon with
excellent "trough" facilities especially on a Sunday Lunch basis!
      Regards
And Happy New Year to one and ALL.

One of my winter projects is to re plumb the pumps to the new recommended
series. What kind of check valves are people using, where do you get them?
Seems like a tangle of hoses to get the job done. Anyone have a neat package
to accomplish this that they want to share?

Paul, I take it you are looking at the mount point for the spring, and not the
servo, when you mention moving the push rods to the other side
of the arm. I don't think this will be a problem, as the stiff nuts are acting
as spacers now, to move the whole mount forward 5mm or so. So if the rods are switched
to the other side then they would become the spacers
i guess, so not much would change.

Someone asked off topic, what about the push rod for the flaps. I take it
this is on the older mono's without the electric flap drive. Given its only
the threaded rod that crosses the tunnel, if the flap rods movement
is largely linear, then i am sure one of you smart guys with the monos could work
      out the servo reposition.

      Hi All,
I too will need the reamer when it is available. No rush. Don't need the
ACF50 necessarily. I assume regular mill cutting oil will suffice.

      Hi Duncan,
I've been thinking along the same lines - however I can't find anywhere
central, with hard runways and a good restaurant, offering free landings.
How about going mad and paying for Leicester? Always a good social spot.
      I suggest 1200hrs as usual,

| Subject: | Bleeding Jamar finger brakes |

Im having a devil of a time with my Jamar finger brakes in my
      tri-gear motorglider.

I can only bleed the brakes when the master cylinders are oriented
vertically with the back of the Jamar master cylinders higher than
the front. As soon as I mount the brakes horizontally, they no
longer bleed after one effective stroke the lever no longer pumps
      brake fluid.

Heres some data which may help you help me get this problem solved:

Im using DOT 5 brake fluid.

I mount a reservoir filled with brake fluid about 9 inches above the
      master cylinders.

The Jamar squirts fluid from both sides when the levers are pulled
back while he Jamar master cylinders are horizontal on my bench and
when mounted horizontally in the plane.

When the Jamar is mounted in the plane and the brake lines are
disconnected from the ends of the master cylinders then the cylinders
squirt brake fluid when the levers are pulled back. However as soon
as I connect the brake lines from the cylinders to the brakes, the
brakes dont work. (This makes me suspect the problem is in the
      brake lines probably air bubbles.)

When one side is working and the other side isnt, if I disconnect
the brake lines and switch the line which isnt working to the side
which does work, then that the side which didn't work now does and
the other doesn't. (I therefore again suspect the problem is in the
line rather than in the Jama but I could very well be wrong.)

I bleed the brakes in two different ways. The first way I connect a
clear tube filled with brake fluid with no bubbles to the brake
nipple. I open the nipple and, using about 20# of air pressure, blow
brake fluid up the brake line to the Jamar. I have loosened the
brake line connection at the master cylinder and watch the brake
fluid leak out. At first I get bubbles, then, when only brake fluid
is leaking, I tighten the connection at the master cylinder and close
the nipple. The Jamar system then works. The brake lever is not at
all spongy. However, over a long period of time with many
applications of the brakes, the lever must be pulled further and
further back and the brakes get spongy, needing bleeding.

The second way I bleed the brakes is by pulling back on the brake
lever while both connections (the brake line to the master and the
brake line to the brakes) are tight. When pressure builds on the
lever, I loosen the nipple and brake fluid gushes out the nipple into
the clear tube Ive connected to the nipple. I then close the nipple
and release the lever which returns to its forward position on its
own. I can see brake fluid leaving the nipple on the first stroke
and I can see the fluid level in reservoir go down.. However, on the
second pump theres no pressure against the movement of the lever, no
brake fluid leaving the nipple and no descent of the fluid level in
the reservoir. This is when the Jamar is horizontal. However, when
I have the Jamar master cylinders vertical the brakes bleed well
using this technique. (I really don't understand this at all but I
guess that air in the master cylinder is pumped out the "top" end of
the cylinder and therefore the brakes work.)

When both sides are working and mounted in the fuselage horizontally,
I try the bleed the brakes. I pull back on the lever the first time
while the nipple is open and I see fluid leave the nipple and the
fluid level in the reservoir drop. On the second pump the lever has
little resistance, no fluid comes out of the nipple and the fluid
level in the reservoir doesnt drop.

Why is it that I can successfully bleed the Jamar only when its
      aligned vertically?

Id like to be able to bleed the brakes without having to orient them
vertically or having to disconnect the brake line from the master
cylinder and blow fluid up from the nipple, letting the master
cylinder to brake line connection leak.

| Subject: | Bleeding Jamar finger brakes |

the only way i have ever bled brakes is by pumping up and holding pressure,
      and then releasing the pressure
at the brake piston bleed point. Generally this requires two people, as the
pedal/lever should be allowed to follow
the pressure and sink right out to full travel, but NOT allowed to return
until the bleed point at the brake is locked up tight
again. this is normally done as many times as needed to ensure all air is
purged from the line. Its not a bad idea to switch
brake fluid to one of a different colour if you can get it part way through,
that way you know you have pushed out the entire
contents of the line and master cylinder when you see the colour change.
Some master cylinders will self bleed to a small degree, which i bet is what
you are seeing when you stand yours on its end. Unless you have a small leak
somewhere, possibly on the seals in the master cylinder
itself, once the lines are free of air, you shouldnt have any further
problems. You also mentioned the remote reservoir, If that is tightly
sealed then once you suck a vaccum in it with the first bleed, then the
system could find a weak point and suck air around a seal or fitting.
You may laugh at this, but remember, a hydraulic brake system can have
several hundred PSI of pressure in it or more, so you could potentially be
creating a few hundred psi of suction. This would account for the level not
      dropping after the first bleed.

      good luck

Bud, the bent nozzles from the water pump housing seem to already
have a bend of around 40 degrees, certainly not 80 degrees - 2 photos
attached with the standard Europa XS exhaust system temporarily fitted.
The hose from the lower nozzle is disconnected. The clearance between
the end of the lower bent nozzle and top of the silencer is 15 mm - is
that sufficient? To increase the clearance a bit it seems I would have
to rotate the bent nozzle upwards a bit.

I just wanted to clarify what you mean by an 80 degree bent nozzle -
I presume you mean bent to nearly a right angle. If so, my engine
doesn't have those. Maybe they have chenged them on recent engines? My
engine serial no is 5647439. So I presume, if I have not misunderstood
you, that I don't need to change the nozzle? Is that correct?

Many thanks for your help - I really appreciate your response and
      advice.

          Kind regards,
          Keith Hickling,
          New Zealand.

            Kieth,
Your fun has just begun. I have my Rotax dealer do my ring
mounts, and it's worth it. When they make the mods, the warranty is not
in question.

Once the engine is modified as indicated above, the FWF assembly
is straight forward. Some have left the coolant lines below the ring
mount when using the older rounder style muffler, but even then, the
muffler's heat destroys the lower hose. One guy rotated the 80 degree
nozzle aft, and put a very long hose on the nozzle to clear the muffler.
Not very neat, and made mounting the engine more of a pain.

It takes a long day to do it the first time. Go slow and take
your time, don't force anything and enjoy yourself. It took longer to
do this email than modify the pump housing.

| Subject: | Bleeding Jamar finger brakes |

My reservoir is not pressurized. I bleed the brakes as Craig describes
but I can't get any pressure on the second stroke unless the Jamar brakes
are verticle instead or horizontal. I can get all the air out of
the system by working the cylinders only when verticle then pumping fluid
up from the brake nipple to where the brake line loosely connects to the
clylinders until I get no bubbles the I tighten the cylinder/line
connection. Doing this makes the brakes work well...for quite a while
but when I have to bleed the system again I have to dismount the
cylinders and loosen the cylinder/line connection allowing bubbles and
brake fluid to seep out until I tighten the connection. It's a real pain
to go through all this to simply bleed the brakes...and it makes a mess.
There's gotta be something wrong with the system that I haven't yet been
able to figure out. Maybe a leak? Maybe a piston part in backwards?
Maybe poor machining on the cylinders allowing leak-by on the return
      stroke?

The recent discussion of 16.5mm reamers reminds me that we completed Mod 72
a few months ago and have no further use for the required reamer. I'd be

      Rob,
I had a similar problem along with bleeding. The DOT 5 fluid kept going
down after a few flights and long taxies. After a lot of re-bleeding
and re-filling the fluid, plus cleaning off the undercarriage I finally
found the leek. Air was getting in, and the fluid was leaking out from
the bleeder set screws on the side of the master cylinders. I put some
Permatex gasket dressing on the bleeder screws and haven't had the
      problem since. Hope this helps.
