Regarding loss of signal... there seem to be 'GPS deadspots' on the
earth's surface, where the alignment of satellites never seems to
deliver the right signal. We have one here in East Africa, the
north-eastern corner of Lake Victoria (worlds largest inland lake).
Each time I transition through this zone from Nairobi, Kenya, to
Entebbe, Uganda, in Europa 5Y-LRY, (as I did yesterday), the GPS signal
is lost for about 40 nm along track (often ALL bars!), then its back
again 20 minutes later along track. Same place, any time of day (not
sure about nighttime) or day of week! GPS is Garmin Pilot III. Can
anyone explain that?

Yes, did just that before i cracked my door. Heating seems to work fine, but no flight testing done. Some pictures are at http://www.europaowners.org/kit600. Let me know if you need further explanation.
Mind you, instead of an oil cooler i have an oil/water heat exchanger, so if you
copy, copy carefully :-)

Careful, long and complicated story. Dive in it on your own risk.
The general understanding, or at least my limited knowledge, seems to be that the
turbo only starts charging over 100%. However, i had a problem earlier in the
week. Outside temperature was -15 C and the plane had been washed in the warm
workshop. Started the engine after about 10 minutes outside, and waited for
the oil to be 50 C. All indications were normal. Then i put in more power, and
noticed that the second half of the throttle control did not do anything. The
engine would not run faster then 35400-3600 rpm. Stopped the engine and took
the cowlings of to check that the throttle levers on the carbs were operational.
They were.
Back in the workshop i checked about everything i could think of. Found nothing.
Noticed that the TCU opens the waste until half throttle, and closes it again
when moving the lever to full throttle. This on a non running engine. Had a
look at the log in the TCU and noticed that the waste gate had been doing the
same with the engine running. Yesterday took the plane out again, and had another
run. OAT -5C. Now full revs could be reached, problem gone.
The TCU log now showed up to full waste gate opening, and opening already started
at 3600 rpm. Interesting was, that closing the throttle a bit from high revs,
opens the waste-gate further. Have a look at the attached log. I assume now
that the intake side of the turbo had been frozen, so that the turbo would not
run during the first attempts.
Just a condensed, frozen droplet on the impeller is probably enough for that. During
the heat up run, air at very low temperatures could keep the ice there,
even if the other side of the turbo is hot.
I also assume that if the pressure in the air box not rises if the waste gate opens,
the TCU starts closing it again. Too much assumptions probably :-)

Hi,
Take a look at http://www.europa.net.nz/363/index.html .Go to the left
side tab under flying experiences, expand it out and you will see a
section on how I built my cabin heat.
For ventilation I have two vents in the top of the windshield and two
eyeball vents. It works pretty well, but if I was to do some more
work in getting the air out of the cabin they would probably be 10x
better.
- You can see the eye ball vents under December 2002
- December 2003 has some photographs of the manifold I made to go on
the fire wall to bring in air. There is a SS heat box on the other
side
- You can see a photo of the heat box under January 2004
- You can see the routing of the hoses in the instrument panel for the
windshield vents and eye ball vents.
I am sure that if you troll through my site you will find a few more photos.

I found this unfortunate slideshow of the aftermath of a crash on youtube.
Anyone have any info on it? The registration on the plane is "19-3749"
(odd) and the video's tag's elude to Australia sometime in 2007 at a "Hay"
airfield.
A quick search through the various accident investigation branches didn't
turn up anything.
It's a conventional-gear mod-ed Europa with a rotax turning a warp-drive.
It looks survivable (I hope), but serious.

Hi Folks,
I noticed the 2 inch diameter hose connecting the carbs to the cold air
plenum are showing signs of crazing.
I found some standard plumbing hose the correct diameter and length but
I'm not sure whether the carbs get hot enough that I really need to use
some kind of heavier weight rubber tube.
Where can I find some suitable hose? Any ideas the spec of the Europa
supplied hose?
Yes, I could get it from the factory but am sure that the poor dollar
exchange rate and shipping costs will be a lot more than the actual
rubber hose.
Any suggestions?

Martin,
Try Bud Yerly at Creative Flight. He is the North American
Europa Dealer/Support guy. He stocks quite a bit of Europa supplies
at the old FlightCrafters site in Seffner, FL.
Since quite a bit of Europa hardware comes from the US to start with,
only to get shipped back with fees, Bud may have local sources
for factory spec supplies.

Yes there is a town of HAY on the hay plains as it happens (no pun intended)
the 19 prefix on the rego means it is registered as an ultralight and
denotes it as home or amature built, if home built kit then 51% or the
labour must be from the owner, or scratch built by the owner/designer. By
the rego number it was registered early june 2002 but it has been removed
from the rego list
as 19-3750 was registered june 7 2002. Looks like it was dumped in from
about 100ft, Interestingly it was only registered for single person ops, no
seat or belts on LHS

Can i make a suggestion and say throw the rubber hose and go for two in
brake duct hose instead.
Its very light very flexible and designed for brake temps of what 300+
degrees. I ran it on off road race buggys
for years with no problems at all. You should be able to get it at most auto
shops.
