      Folks,

One more question. I don't really have a starting problem, but once
in a great while mine will kick back. Does the Soft start product fix
      this ?

      Thanks, Paul

      Hi Folks,

Yes, it's true. I do manufacture the Soft Start Module (SSM).

Although I designed/developed/tested/manufacture the device, it's not my idea.
Conrad told me how it should operate and I "made it so". So it's really a joint
effort. Conrad might be a grease monkey but he's a damn clever one! No, I can't
sell them to individuals. All the units go straight to Conrad.

The whole purpose of the SSM is to stop the engine kicking back on startup. The
problem stems from the fact that the Rotax ignition modules advance the ignition
rather too readily. The SSM keeps the ignition retarded while the starter
is energised (and for a little while afterwards). So the SSM is simply making
up for the bug in the Rotax modules. You may wonder why Rotax don't fix the ignition
modules and I think the answer to that is rooted in the fact that it's
a certified engine. Once certified, it's set in stone, nothing can be changed
      (even if it has bugs).

What's interesting is that not all engines kick back. Some do, some don't.

      Cheers,

      Mark

PS - my new propeller balancer (the imaginatively named PB-2) has finally been
released. It's only about 12 months late, lots of other stuff (like the SSM) got
      in the way

      Hi all,
I've fitted a J.P.I FS450 fuel computer, and about to apply for
a mod. On the application form it states /"does this mod appear on any
similar aircraft. if yes which one"/ So obviously my question is has any
one in the uk fitted this mod and may I put down your registration.

      Hi Martin,

Lockwood Aviation Supply will stock those items. The Maintenance
Manager, Kerry Younck, at 863-655-6229 should be able to help you out
with part numbers. As I am sure you know, it is important that the
retaining barbs on the Faston connectors are bent out so that you get
full locking engagement in the housing. On one occasion, a generator
wire on my engine vibrated loose due to this problem.

      Subject: Europa-List: Locking Spade Connectors
      Hi Folks,
I'm rewiring my panel a little to make it easier to pull for maintenance.
I'm looking for the part number or a source for those spade connectors that
slide onto the spades of the Rotax (Ducati) regulator. I'm specifically looking
for the ones that lock into the plastic housing (which holds all five or six
connectors and then locks itself onto the regulator). I can find regular 1/4
in spade connectors but they don't lock into the housing and thus are very
difficult to push on as the contacts are up inside the regulator some.
      Any ideas would be appreciated.

      Danny,

I have the mod approved. The mod number is 11944 on Europa XS G-DDBD. Andy
Draper has asked the club to produce a standard mod for this but that will
      take a bit of time.

       Hi Kevin,

Sorry for the confusion, I should have mentioned that the sink numbers
were with the engine at idle, with an Airmaster prop. The sink rate can
be expected to be better with the engine off and prop feathered, which
we haven't had the opportunity to do yet. Our Europa motorglider has
noticeably greater sink at engine idle than the Katana Extreme we
trained on last fall. The Katana has a 914 with a two bladed prop, ours
is a 912S with three bladed prop. It may be the three bladed prop that
makes the biggest difference between the two planes (although the higher
compression 912S may also contribute to the difference). When we
changed over from the two bladed Whirlwind to the three bladed
Airmaster, the only noticeable change in performance between the two was
the braking effect at engine idle, with the Airmaster providing greater
      braking.

We will get some engine off/prop feathered data as soon as we get a
      weekend with suitable weather.

      Regards,
      Terry

      Terry & Dave,

      Congratulations!

I imagine that your sink rate tests were with the engine off and the
      prop feathered?
Did the CG change with the long wings installed? Best LD will be found
      near the aft limit.
Have you sealed the gaps in the wing root?

Glad to hear you guys are gliding... Kevin

      Terry,

If this isn't too dumb a question... but were you training for a glider
rating in a powered sailplane or were you training for a powered
sailplane rating (which I didn't think existed)?

      Hi Fred,

I got a rating for glider, self launched, which is different from
      glider, towed.
