Subject: | A Fly-in in memory of William and Paul |
"A Fly-in in memory of William and Paul.
"Throughout the Europa community there was enormous respect for William
Mills and Paul Sweeting, who were both so sadly killed in a Europa accident
in June 2007. Bryan Alsop and Paddy Clarke have suggested that the Club
should arrange a "DOTH" in memory of William and Paul, and Shobdon Airfield
- so near to both William and Paul's homes - has offered to host this event.
"By tradition, a DOTH is a meeting of Europa owners/aircraft at an airfield,
chosen at short notice (24 or at most 48 hours), when suitable weather is
forecast. However, we feel that a DOTH in these circumstances would not be
fair on our Europa community, some of whom may wish to attend from a
considerable distance. Therefore, we have identified 2 Sundays at the end of
April/beginning of May (April 27 and May 4) on one of which we will hold the
event. We will go for the first of those 2 Sundays - 27 April - but if, 3 or
4 days in advance, the Met men advise postponement, we will change to the
second date.
"Apart from giving people early warning of the dates, the purpose of this
advanced notice is to try to gauge the likely numbers of the Europa
community who may wish to attend. Because William - and indeed Paul, himself
a Herefordshire Aero Club (Shobdon) member - were so universally well
respected, we feel that many of their Europa friends may wish to come. If as
the Shobdon representative I can have some idea of the numbers, we at
Shobdon will know how big the fly-in might be - and we will be able to
organise accordingly. The Shobdon management has said that there will be no
landing fees, but visitors will be invited to make a worthwhile donation to
a charity which will be named when detailed instructions are sent out.
"Can I therefore please ask all those who would hope to attend to send me an
e-mail off forum - with "William's fly-in" in the subject box (this is
important because my system puts e-mails with unknown sender addresses into
the spam box) - by Tuesday 26 March; this does not commit you in any way! In
your e-mail, please state aircraft registration and number(s) on board. Once
we have a feel for the numbers, we will issue a more detailed plan for the
day. If you know of any of William's Europa friends who do not watch this
forum but who may wish to attend, could you please forward this message to
them. And - this is not confined to UK Europa friends!
"We look forward to hearing from you,
"David - on behalf of Bryan, Paddy and Shobdon"

Subject: | Cabin heating system |
Some time ago there has been a discussion on a closed cabin heating system
that worked by means of a box clamped over the exhaust pipe, taking air from
the front of the cowling and delivering it to both sides of the dashboard
through eyeball vents. When I remember well this system was commercially
supplied by a company and easy to mount. Big advantages were: a very simple
system and no exhaust gasses into the cabin. After that I never heard of it.
Is there somebody who can put me on the track, c.q. point me to an address
where I can get more information. Thanks! Jack van Heeswijk, PH-LOB

I presume the colonies to which you refer are on the North American mainland
;-) If so, here's what the AOPA recently included in a newsletter:
CERTAIN U.S. PILOTS NEED NEW 'ENGLISH PROFICIENT' CERTIFICATE
Do you fly internationally? If so, you'll need a new pilot certificate with
the words "English Proficient" on it. The new certificate will be required
for international flights starting March 5, when the International Civil
Aviation Organization's language proficiency standards for operating
internationally go into effect. The requirement applies to airplane and
helicopter private, commercial, and airline transport pilots; flight
engineers; and flight navigators. Pilots with a U.S.-issued certificate will
not need to pass a language test, just request a replacement certificate
from the FAA. The plastic replacement certificate will cost $2 and take
seven to 10 days to be processed. All newly issued pilot certificates will
have the endorsement.

How come we aren't equipping our radios with a button - 1 for English, 2
for Spanish, etc? We do it for everything else.

Gentlepeople,
I've attached the door hinges to the doors per the manual and notice
that it calls for the tangs of the door mouldings at the hinges to be
trimmed to create a gap of 5/16" at the hinge recess in the fuselage
top moulding in order to fully raise the doors. I'm noticing what seems
like an odd geometry in that the ends of the tang recess is not
parallel to the hinge pin line.
The result appears to be a 5/16" x approx. 2" slot of varying depth in
our otherwise slick and clean fuselage top.
Going by the old saw of "think 3 times, measure twice, cut once",
before I cut, I'm wondering if some clever fellow has figured out a
way to avoid this slot, or is this something which everyone lives with?
Or have I misinterpreted the plans?
Has anyone deepened the tang recesses in order to for the tangs to
remain full length (with no slot) while providing clearance for the
tang when the door is fully open?
Or have I, by even considering such a minute detail, once again,
slipped off that precipice separating conscientious building and
obsession?
All comments gratefully appreciated, though I will not be able to
acknowledge any until Friday!
Thanks,
Fred

Fred,
Yes, some folk have deepened the recesses for the door hinge tangs. I
cannot comment on the impact of doing that on the overall integrity of
the structure, but it can make installing a ceiling panel more
complicated, i.e. the deepened recesses may prevent a flat ceiling panel
sitting flush on the door rebates.
Cliff Shaw came up with a practical solution. Shorten the door tangs
just enough for the doors to open fully. Then lay-up 2-3 layers of BID
in the top of the recesses, flush with the roof line. (Make temporary
blue foam inserts so that you can form flox corners under the BID).
Adjust the width of BID in-fill to get a neat gap between the end of the
tangs and the edge of the BID in-fills, say 2-3 mm (7/64th inch).
There are photographs on the late Mr Shaw's album in the EuropaOwners
website. If you struggle to find them, I'll dig them out for you.

Dave

Hi Fred,
After seemingly endless shortening and deepening i finally cut the recesses. Put the doors in open position, taped some carton and foam around the tangs and stuck glass and epoxy over that. You can't tell the difference, but it fits. Sounds drastic, but in the end was easier then the endless trial and error method. There are some pictures of that operation in http://www.europaowners.org/kit600
