Just another data point,
I've used the Jamar master cylinders for in operation for almost
4 years without a problem. They were recommended by FlightCrafters
long before the factory gave in to hand brakes. The only change I've
made over the years is to increase the length of handle to increase
the mechanical advantage. My wheels and brakes are standard
Matco.

and that the "private" licence categories are now being processed at the

I guess you had a life during the build unlike some of us? Mine was

even brought retirement on like stealth !
At least now you can enjoy the fruits !

Fred,
Just a small hint before you run into the next trouble with your doors: Bond
the shoot bolt guides into the fuselage structure only AFTER painting the
doors inside! I had to learn the hard way, that painting can make the door
fitting too tight. Implication: The guides had to be taken out,
repositioned and bonded in again. Good luck and lots of patience!

Yerlysan...you are indeed a master and I such a novice...this is said with
total respect.
It's reassuring to know that a pro plans for 40 hours/door set, I think I've
been hard at it for about 3 weeks, just this morning succeeding in locking
the shoot bolts within the fuselage after being satisfied w/ the hinge
operation. I wish I had had the benefit of your process before beginning
rather than accepting the build manual as gospel (until I hit some dead
ends).
Thank you for your comments on gapping, as how to properly allow for filler
and paint has been something I've been scratching my head about; the goal
being to have all gaps looking good AND functional after getting them back
from the painter. I've been really surprised to find significant variations
in the thickness of the filler/primer on the fuselage top in the vicinity of
the tang recesses as delivered.
I have one suggestion which may be helpful to others regarding the location
of the hinges and their alignment. I happened to have a 6'
length of 3/32" precision ground SS rod (from McMaster-Carr) which I
temporarily substituted for the hinge pins while locating the hinge leaves
on the tang. Used in conjunction w/ a straightedge, it really simplified
alignment.

Surely this requirement was known months in advance so why have we not

Thanks Jos...I appreciate your perspective as one who indeed persevered
and found it to be worthwhile...yes, those walking away and see later
days do add up...I feel I'm at one of those stages where one has to
keep his eye on the ball even when you can't see the ball...Fred
Actually Jos, that was yesterday...Today I managed to get my shoot
bolts engaged in the fuselage for the first time...the hinges seem to
work...and I have a hair line gap between top of fuselage and end of
tang when the doors are closed!
Now...if I can eliminate the 3/32" bulge at the middle of the port side
door lower edge, I'll be a happy camper!

It's hi time a Wilksch was flying, it was December '99 when the first
engine lifted a Europa off the ground. (I was left seat and Mark Wilksch
was right. It was foggy so we only went as high as 10 feet.)Can't
believe its taken so long
Just make sure CG is not too far forward so you don't run out of
elevator authority on landing

Graham Singleton,
Do you know whether or not the Ted Gladstone gas strut mod preceeded
the factory Mod 66, or does it address issues which the factory mod
does not solve?

Bud,
When in place within the fuselage rebates, both my doors "bulge" 3/32
of an inch when measured at the center of the bottom edge. The
possibility of heat-forming them for a "flawless" fit did not occur to
me.
Would you opine as to whether or not heating and reforming the doors in
my case is warranted, and, if so, what would be the recommended
technique and what temperatures should be optimum?
Thanks,
Fred

Ted's is the most elegant design I've seen, pity the factory didn't take

The factory mod still strains the door (but lesas) Ted's does not.

Subject: | MONO-WHEEL GEAR RETRACTION |
Last month I wrote that I had landing gear retraction problems in an XS abo
ut 7 years old and 400 hrs flight time. Several of you made useful suggest
ions--mostly to tighten or replace the bungee. Thank you for your respones.
On repair, this is what I found.
I placed the aircraft up on jacks and removed the main wheel to make room t
o work on the bungee. Before I started on the bungee I tried retraction to
see if I could do it without the 25 lbs of wheel and brake. I could not--
even with someone else pushing on the swing arm. Closer examination reveal
ed a wet looking hydraulic damper on the right side. But even more interes
ting was just a little bit of the polyurethane shock block squeezed out on
the right side--and it was evident that it was rubbing on the swing arm as
it neared full retraction. I removed and replaced both dampers and the sho
ck block. The wet looking damper had little resistance. I also replaced t
he EUR 026 bolt that goes through the top of the dampers because it was sli
ghtly bent also on the right side. Before I replaced the shock block/dampe
r assembly I tightened the bungees which wasn't too difficult working alone
with adequate space and a little wedge to hold the bungee as I worked alon
g the loops. (Thanks Kim Prout!)
Also while I was there I removed the Matco parking brake because it had not
been holding. At first I was just going to change to the spare channel on
the Matco but the replacement of O-rings is easy and cheap (Matcomfg.com).
Everything reassembled, I was ready for the big test. Surprise. The outri
ggers did not fully retract. I removed the speed fairings and found that b
oth push rods (OR5) were very badly bent and jamming on the outboard W21 si
de plates. Furthermore, the slots in the push rods were badly gouged in on
e spot as if the full length of the slot was not being used. I replaced t
he push rods, lublicated appropriately and tried retraction once more. Wor
ked better than ever--just as advertised.
One advantage of having operational problems is that after overcoming them,
one can be more astute in pre-flight inspections.
