Subject: Recommended oils and main gear leg sockets
Greetings team, Can anybody provide a link to info about this change in approved oils? I checked the Rotax Owners Group and didn't see anything new. I've been running Pennzoil 3888 motorcycle oil, as was recommended by Aeromot in the 912S in my Ximango. Any info is appreciated. In regard to the main gear leg sockets, I fitted mine well before the top went on. I deviated a bit from the Europa method of fitting the sockets, however. I built my cradle with lower bracing between the front and rear legs that was perfectly level with respect to the lower half of the fuselage. Using a piece of 2" steel angle iron attached crosswise on the cradle, I fitted the sockets using the gear legs, with the axle portion locked into the steel angle with "C" clamps. This put the axles level and even for the fitting of the sockets. The result is N245E tracks straight as an arrow on pavement with no tendency to veer one way or the other. I have also not noticed any abnormal tire wear, but then again I mostly fly from grass. I found it very handy to be able to move the canoe around in the shop once it was up on the gear, as opposed to being locked in the cradle. Hope it helps! Regards, John Lawton Whitwell, TN (TN89) N245E - Flying **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. From: "milnera" <alan_milner@totalise.co.uk>
I had hoped for an Easter weekend in Cornwall, but with snow, rain, gales and generally miserable weather I thought I'd make up some wing dolleys to aid self rigging. I've pretty much copied the design used by many; essentially two layups clamped around the tip, hinged on the underside and supported by a two wheeled metal frame the pivots to allow the wing to move from vertical to horizontal. The layups are curing now in this tropical heat so they should be ready by next Easter :) Anyone who has been using a similar design, can you suggest where to put the pivot point for a trigear wing? I planned to balance it so it's slightly leading-edge heavy. It would then fall to the vertical for storage and when wheeling it around. Any comments from experience most welcome. I haven't built the frame yet. Alan Visit - www.EuropaOwners.org

I was one. I installed the entire undercarriage once the cockpit module was fitted, and discarded the trestles the fuselage was sitting on. Mine was about 40 hours of work with the top NOT bonded on! I cant imagine attempting such a lay-up with the top on. I originally called Europa about this. Andy said so long as you have a cradle with very good support there should be no problem. Lots of photos on this chapter in my little area of Europa Owners. Hi Guys, Thanks for the suggestion re Valvoline, this is a brand I have not looked for. I can't find the Pennzoil motorcycle oil anymore. It seems to have been replaced by "outdoor Equipment" oil. Shows a motorcycle among other things on the container, but the API specification I think is different. For what it is worth, I also installed the gear leg sockets without the top on, so far, the tire wear has been even. It's worth clecoing the top on to maintain the straightness of the aft half but it makes a lot of sense to leave the top off when working in the tub. Makes it possible to do many of the jobs properly, like setting up and adjusting the elevator travel and trim tab connection, almost impossible with the top on! Graham

Subject: Wing dolley - where to put the pivot point
Hi! Alan I mused about this problem when I built my wing dolly and also since having used it often. However when I rig with a helper, who initially handles the tip, when I take over the tip end from him having engaged the spar, I lift the tip trailing edge with one hand until he is out of the way, so my thoughts are that the tip end C of G is in fact behind the trailing edge (in fresh air!) when the root end of the wing is supported by the spar. In other words you can not make the dolly to fit the C of G. I plumped for approx. mid chord for the pivot. It was not too difficult to locate Dura Blend, although up here they only seem to stock 5/30 and 10/30. My 912ULS runs cool, at least it does in this part of the world, so I presume 30 will be OK. As luck would have it, I also found some of the Pennzoil motorcycle oil that I had been using. I'm not sure if it is old stock that would be acceptable, or if it is a new batch that has been re-formulated. Anyway, next oil change will be to Dura Blend.
