Hi Rob, The complaint I have is to myself that I do not find the time to do more building. I enjoy time spend on my plane. The point I tried to make is that the builder spend quite some time on the web for the main gear sockets. Even without the top on you spend a lot time bending over. Building should be fun. It is more fun if you work smart and try to have as easy access as possible. To me, time spend building is therapy. What you don't want is therapy after time spend building so work smart and enjoy the quality time spend with your project. What I did, I used bondo and stuck 5 reference points to the garage floor. 3 along the centerline of the fuselage. One in the front, one in the center of the main gear legs and one in the center under the fin. all lined up and on the exact same height and in level along a line. Then I bonded with bondo the endpoints of the main gear legs to the floor. Again made sure with Pythagoras help that it was square to the center line and on the same level. After that I rolled my fuselage cradle over those points and used M12 threaded rod as a height adjustment to level the fuselage over my 3 reference points along the center line and clamped the main gear legs into position. This kept the fuselage the whole time igid and secured in place. I kept this setup in place till the top fuselage was bonded on. Nothing moved and all is plum, squared and level. Craig, I don't know what your plans are regarding painting, but now is a good time to paint the inverted fuselage half, after you have finished the sockets etc. It is ten times easier than waiting for completio n. But if someone else is going to do the paint job then just forget my suggestion. Also, Neville had suggested to re-inforce t he exterior area aroundthe sockets with a multiple layer of bid. I assumed that maybe an early Europa had developed c racks in the skin from hard landings. I just received from a friend of mine. Makes you so glad to be British doesn't it.What a wonderful group the CAA are.! Anyway I hope the information is of use. Alan Hi Everyone........... Have just spoken to a nice lady at the UK CAA about the issue of Language Proficiency Endorsements She says that the CAA has not yet started issuing these for non-commercial licence holders and that in any case they have a period of three years in which to complete the task ! When I asked her if there could be a problem for a UK PPL flying into foreign airspace where they do not have a three years introduction period, she said " I cannot speak on behalf of other states" !!! So, it seems that we are not going to have these pieces of paper very quickly! She did, in the end, say that I could try Emailing pldlanguage@caa.co.uk and do some special pleading! Lastly, the sting in the tail for me was when she looked for my licence records on her computer and said you appear to only have an Radio telephony licence and no PPL ! Then she told me that the transition from the CAA's old DOS based computer to the Windows based system had not been successful in all cases and sometimes the information had not managed to migrate across. ! I was relieved when she fired up the old system and eventually found me under a completely different reference number! So I do exist, but only just! Special Pleading here I come! Hope this is both helpful if not amusing ! Grumpier than ever Peter Checked by AVG. 24/03/2008 15:03

Thanks Alan - my plead has just left my computer. I do not know whether you saw my earlier e-mail when I commented that my son already has his new licence a week or so ago but he has a JAR licence so perhaps that makes the difference. Steve Pitt

Alan I don't think the lady you spoke to at the CAA knew what she was talking about. I have just been sent a new version of my UK PPL which confrims in section XIII that I am proficient in the English language. How they know I have no idea. I was born in Holland, and am still a Dutch national, but the CAA are perhaps assuming that after living in the UK for nearly 50 years I must have picked up a working knowledge of the local language! Alan, xc weather is a magical site that decodes Metars for you in real time for the whole of the UK and for the main European countries. It also offers you contour maps of visibility, wind strength etc derived from those Metars. All free. Easily accessed from www.guernseyaeroclub.co/weather.htm which has all sorts of other useful preflight systems.
