Just a link you might find useful. I found it impossible to find the
Shell
VSX in the local motorbike outlets so last year tried AM Oils, who
advertise
in the back of the LAA magazine. Ordered on line and had the oil within
a
couple of days. Having used the first 12 bottles I ordered another box
on
Sunday afternoon ' it arrived this morning (Wednesday). Now that is

Our runway is 18 m x 600 m asphalt 26 - 08 and I agree 100 % with your
handling because I experience the same results and entire satisfaction
with my Mono XS # 447 F-PKRL with Airmaster AP332 on a 912ULS even
though I have only 110 hours. If this can confort you....

Hi John,
What a lucky lad being able to fly to Sun N Fun! Yes it's true that
things are worse with a fixed pitch prop, but we've been loving the
benefits of our Airmaster constant speed for about 8 years. We always
make the final approach to land in fully fine pitch crossing the
threshold at 55 knots or less.
Our runway is 500m tarred but narrow, barely 15m. Even in still air
with the prop fully fine, we use up the majority of the runway esp. when
light. Crosswinds can be challenging on our relatively narrow strip with
soft ground/ditch/long weeds to catch the outriggers should anyone allow
the 'plane to drift too far sideways.
Scottish weather being what it is, the verges tend to remain soft for
much of the year and at least half the year the wind blows 10 to 15
knots at right angles. The annual quota of sunny days with winds light
along the runway can almost be counted on your fingers and toes. They
tend to happen on working days or when the wife wants something done
around the house and garden. I wonder if I can find a well-paid job in
the US of A!
In the mean time I'll keep our engine settings the way they are to
minimise floating and ask my Sheila's angels to surround us in a fluffy
pink cocoon. Actually I can't see any problem with my settings; as I
emphasised previously, we keep the engine above 2000 rpm for all but a
couple of seconds when checking slow running before take off. During the
glide it remains smooth without any hint of quitting. We aren't allowing
the gearbox to chatter, ever. Someone please prove me wrong!!
Am I green with envy? Who, me! Well at least we know that the Europa
is still a brilliant little machine.
Jonathan

advice that I should post these communications on the forum are set out
for you below. The four of us who have been flying G-EIKY since 1997
(865 hours in tech. log) have no problem in remembering never to allow
the engine to idle below 1500 rpm. In fact after starting we use the
throttle to maintain warm-up above 2000 rpm and don't taxi below 1500
rpm. Only briefly after checking the ignitions do we pull the throttle
all the way back for a couple of seconds to check slow running around
800 rpm before commencing take-off. On
> rounding out for a landing, the throttle is closed fully until the
landing roll is completed and re-opened once the aircraft reaches a safe
taxi speed. Thus the percentage of time that our engine spends below
1500 rpm is almo
> st negligible. I learned to fly on Harvards 40 years ago and clocked
274 hours on that type. The combined experience of my fellow group
members on tailwheel machines totals in the 1000's. All this might not
make us any safer than others with less time in tail draggers, but I
certainly wouldn't have been wanting to land any such aircraft in a
crosswind with the engine idling quickly. Get squarely in contact with
Mother Earth a.s.a.p. after rounding out is my fervent hope and
intention! If anyone has comments or criticisms, I'd be grateful for
your input. Thanks. Jonathan

for your set up, but you benefit from an aircraft that is easier to keep
on the ground. Normally it is difficult to achieve a stable speed below
1200, and the engine will often stop if set any lower. Rotax suggest

> Hello Conrad, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your very helpful, clear
and valuable articles on servicing Rotax engines and I look forward to
the next one. Now I'm going to take the risk of slightly contradicting
something you wrote and hope you won't think too ill of me. I know that
your articles and advice are not aircraft type-specific, but idle speed
is a sensitive issue with Europa mono/tailwheel aircraft during the
touch-down phase. With its laminar flow wing and slippery profile, the
Europa mono is a bit notorious for departing from the runway against the
pilot's wishes and efforts. It wil
> l float after rounding out and can easily "balloon" upwards if just
a little wind gust should happen. Once the Europa is squarely planted on
the ground with the stick held fully back and the tailwheel solidly
gripping the surface, then it is easy enough to keep it running
straight. It's during the tricky period between raising the aircraft
nose to round out and getting well settled on the runway that
directional control can be awkward, particularly in a crosswind.
Therefore it follows that this period of floating above the surface must
be kept to a minimum. A fast idling engine will exacerbate
> any problems. I keep the carburettors adjusted so that at full
engine operating temperature and with the aircraft standing still in nil
wind, the idle is around 800 rpm and the engine is on the verge of
cutting out. Of course this means that the engine is safely idling at
around 1200 rpm with the throttle fully closed while gliding. We who
belong to the group that flies this Europa are all fully aware that
allowing the gearbox to clatter at low rpm on the ground will
drastically shorten its life, so we always set the throttle to keep the
rpm above 1500 after start up and when taxying. Possibl
> y the reason why our monowheel Europa has survived relatively
unscathed for 11 years ( touch wood ) is that we are nearly all
professional pilots with a lot of general aviation experience and
tailwheel experience. But we all also appreciate the importance of
minimising the floating period after rounding out for a landing. Thanks
for your superb contribution to better understanding the maintenance of
our engine. Sincerely. Jonathan Milbank

To Trigear converters,
By any chance, would anyone in the US happen to have lying around P/N
FL24, the monowheel Retraction Lever Guide Plate? I over cut mine and
just got it back from a welder who has botched up a repair of it...so
I'm looking for a new one.

Fred,
I'm at work right now so I can't get to mine to measure, but I think it's only
6061-T6 3/16" x 1 1/4" rectangular bar. Just order the appropriate length from
ACS (Part No. 03-46250) @ $2.70/ft + shipping.
In any case, if that's not the correct thickness, I'm sure that ACS will have some
slab of Aluminum that will do just fine with some gentle file work.
Good building and great flying,

Subject: | Europa Club membership - off topic |
Hello,
I am here regretfully to state that I will be unable to use my VISA
card to renew membership in the Europa Club - and thus achieve quick and
painless extention to my membership. The reason is a new request of me to
utilize something called a "Verify by VISA" so-called service.
This service claims to provide additional security by my providing
personal information above and beyond that required to get the card (which I
have had since its first day in operation). In the Conditions prescribed in
the small print is the terribly necessary agreement to permit "various
messages of information" from 'third parties', the like of which I already
suffer from previous scams - and I am no longer willing to suffer these -
nor do I see how these improve any security for either myself nor the
trader.
So it seems the only method open in spite of all the precautions I
(and a myriad of large institutions) have taken, is to revert to HM the post
office, which (a) will delay my subscription and thus the use of the funds,
(b) will add to the expense (only slightly) and (c) thwart the demands of
some upwardly-enthusiastic second-class minor executive. If he/she were to
fully explain who these mysterious third parties were and honestly reveal
the personal details to which they deserved knowledge, I might be tempted to
agree.
So, sorry, my delayed renewal (because of the late Flyer) comes
across by paqueboat perhaps, but not at the speed of light. If I'm 'way off
base, let me know how.
Cheers, Ferg

Ferg,
Thanks for the remainder, i was in the process of forgetting to renew. Also my
card payment diverted to "verified by", which brought me to my banks authorization
page, and upon entering my password there, approved the transaction. Nothing
special, just added security.
If this card would have been stolen or borrowed it would have been useless for
this transaction. It's not the club or it's handling agent who imposes the extra
layer, it is you who have agreed to extra security somewhere in the process
of renewing your card. If you are getting "funny" questions, i would immediately
contact the bank and the credit card company. And have your computer scanned
for back doors and spy ware.

just query the oil consumption of your engine. Mine only uses a litre
in around 100 hrs.

Morning All
Just a link you might find useful. I found it impossible to find the
Shell VSX in the local motorbike outlets so last year tried AM Oils, who
advertise in the back of the LAA magazine. Ordered on line and had the
oil within a couple of days. Having used the first 12 bottles I ordered
another box on Sunday afternoon =93 it arrived this morning
(Wednesday). Now that is what I call good service.

Ferg - you've obviously missed the considerable publicity that most
card issuers have generated about Verified by Visa (and other similar
schemes such as 3D Secure). Maybe you binned some fancy colour
leaflets that came along with your monthly statement?
You'll probably find that soon you won't be able to do much online
shopping without these extra layers of security. If you haven't
already set it up, the first time afer your particular card issuer
goes live with it, you'll probably get vectored off to do the setup
stuff before you can complete the purchase, unless you have
deliberately done the setup already, like it said in the glossy
leaflet earlier.
Please note that you can't renew (or join) by snail-mail unless you
remit in UK funds (pounds sterling) and the Club can now only accept
card payments on the website (for reasons explained in tooooo much
detail over several memsec columns in the newsletter).
Sorry for the extra few minutes it will take people to go through the
security hoops. The timing of the implementation is up to individual
card issuers so not everyone may see the security stuff immediately.
regards
Rowland

To Jos and Rowland, Thank you.
I appreciate that you have taken time to respond, and I quite agree
with you that added security is a good and necessary thing. Signing credit
card authorization receipts which have many of the cards' numbers blanked
out was an Improvement - but is still the source of theft when not so
treated, - was one improvement, the three-figure number on the back was
another.
..and I suppose the extra security steps in this latest attempt are
a third. However the previous two did not require that I agree to be the
subject of "various items of news and developments from time to time" (or
words to that effect). I find that to be an open and indefensible clause
which guarantees no security whatsoever.
That was not mentioned in the replies but I feel it needs to be.
There is a limit to what the credit card can be made to do - just as there
is one to email. It cannot be made imperative, no matter what the banks and
financial institutions try to impose control.
I regard the use of the card as an even trade - my dollars (or
whatever) for their goods - not a great privilege, nor an immense favour -
but an even trade. The early propaganda was that the card would increase
casual and easy spending and so the merchants should be pleased to play.
Nevertheless there are many merchants in North America who refuse to accept
the card because they now must pay a greater percentage than when they
began. I cannot blame them.
When they rescind the blackmail of forcing me to receive their
offal, I will recant - unless of course they sign an agreement to accept
mine - otherwise it is no longer an even trade. But I've made my
arrangements, so the cheque (which is still an approved and legal currency)
will arrive in pounds.
..no anger. I still regard my membership in the Club as a vital
adjunct to the build. and it will be for two years.
Happy landings

Hi Bob,
With my limited tool inventory, the pre-cut slot in FL24 is a real
advantage for me over making one up from stock; enlarging slot for the
gates I can handle (at least on a second try!). Before I order one from
the factory, I thought it worth the time to see if a trigear-converter
had one lying around.
