Gentlemen. 2 years ago I flew my Europa from Odense, Denmark to St. Ghislain, Belgium, to test-fly another Europa for an English buyer living in Sweden. Years ago I received confirmations from the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, T he Chech Republic, Norway and Sweden , Switzerland and France, that home-builts with a nationa l Certificate of Airworthiness are welcome to the airspace of said countries without further ado. For some reason I plum forgot to ask the Belgians, and I never thought of a sking the Belgian authorities of a special permission, let alone imagined a special fee to desecrate Belg ian soil when, in blissful ignorance, I ventured there. And lo and behold: never heard a word of reproach, neither received a bill for my apparent misdemeanour. You can draw your own conclusions from that. Roger confirms that the transparent pipe supplied by Europa has not been PVC since 1998. I do not remember the exact material now used. If your pipe is pre 1998 then make sure it is changed. One of the clear tubing types replacing all PVC tubing on homebuilts is ' Polyurethane without plasticisers' - sometimes known as 'Blue Urethane'. Following a fuel supply accident to a gyroplane the CAA issued mandatory permit directive 1998-019 requiring inspection and possible replacement of flexible plastic tubing on all Permit aircraft.( I placed a copy in my manual) At the time I'm fairly sure Europa sent a coil of the new tubing to all builders of earlier kits. Many thanks for your collective thoughts on crossing borders between Schengen agreement states. I liked Jean Philippe Neel's the best!, so will take that as gospel. I am aware that it is necessary to get permission from the Spanish DGCA for UK Permit type aircraft and am wondering if anyone has obtained an e-mail address, as my fax machine has long since died. I have tried dgac@formento.es but no reply to date. Brian Tarmar G-OBJT I choose Polesoft Lockspam to fight spam, and you? http://www.polesoft.com/refer.html

Does anyone know how to tell the difference, based on melting point. The urethane stuff has a higher melting point than the PVC. So, for example one will melt on a medium iron whereas the other won't?? Previously it was possible to differentiate on the elasticity/hysteresis of a sample, but no they seem very similar (or PVC is being labelled commonly as urethane!). PVC needs a plasticizer to be flexible (afaik) Gasolene tends to leach out the plasticiser causing embrittlement. (My guess) PU does not, the polymer can be modified to many elasticity values. Also there are polyether Urethanes and polyester ones. The latter are better quality and less susceptible to hydrolysis.
