Subject: | Conventional tail dragger conversion - Help Needed |
Hi Paul,
I converted my Mono to a Trigear last year and fitted the Matco master
cylinders using the factory kit. The moulding I think you are referring to
is actually two mouldings. One creates a horizontal platform to mount the
master cylinders and the other is a bolt on cover to replace the large area
of tunnel that you have to remove. Having a nice (but heavy) leather
interior I could not bring myself to cut such a large chunk out of the
tunnel and fit an ugly bolted cover in its place. I built a simple platform
out of plywood & fibre glass that could be removed from the wheel well and
simply cut a second slot in the tunnel for the second brake lever. (all
approved by the UK LAA). There is a picture of the removable platform that I
built on page 10 of the latest Europa Flyer. I can send you more detail if
you need it. Having done all this work I discovered Nev Eyre had a much
simpler approach- just fit a second mono brake master cylinder alongside the
existing one.

--> <paul.the.aviator@gmail.com>
Hi All,
Some of you may recall from my previous postings that I intend to convert my
mono to a tail dragger. I got the conversion kit from Bob Berbue about a
month ago and I have decided that I will fly this summer and then over
winter I will do the conversion.
I am slowly organizing all the bits I need and I was wondering if some
generous soul would be prepared to lend me the moulding that fits on the
tunnel for the finger brakes, and the aluminum hardware that is used for
mounting up the Matco master cylinders. I'd like make a splash copy of the
moulding and return it as soon as I am finished.
If anyone in the US can help me I'd appreciate it. Obviously I would cover
any out of pocket expenses. Please contact me off forum if you can help.
Thanks and regards, Paul

I meant in as far as sleeping with ones legs through the D panel and your
head over the seats, Obviously if i were to get in the back
behind the main gear and weighed more than say your bags, then yes you would
be in trouble. I was more referring to the fact
that the trike sits more or less level on the ground, where as the mono sits
tail down.

Paul,
When I fitted the brake cylinder to Baby Blue, I constructed a plywood
shelf across the tunnel, at the proper height, then glassed it in. The
cylinder fits nicely on the shelf and, after removing the narrow hump,
in the center of the console, a flat plat finished out the installation,
nicely as well as provided a mount for the throttle assembly. After
returning from SNF, with my newly purchased Trio altitude hold, I found
the the shelf also provided a perfect mount for the electronic control
head... ;) I'll be happy to show you what I did, at the Rough River
gathering.
See you (and hopefully several others) then.

Jeff-
Nice seeing you and everyone else at SNF. I have the problems with my wing closeout
fixed and am only a few hours from having them completed.
Did someone reserve a large boat for the group to go out to dinner? If you will
recall, we tried to last time and it was booked weeks in advance. Also, have
dates been tied down, and what are they?
I plan to bring my dingy and outboard so anyone who wants to see the area is welcome
to them. It does not look like I will be done by then so will also pick
up a couple of cases of beer on the way up.

Looks like a list may be in order for the second annual Rough River USA
Europa Fly-In.
I will be there with Gold Rush N128LJ and if last year was an
indication I believe we'll be over the top on the fun factor scale.
I'll bring a box of red wine for us health conscious people. ;o)

Because of the forecast passage of a cold front across UK on Sunday 27
April, we have postponed the flyin at Shobdon until Sunday 4 May.
Everyone who notified me that they wished to attend this Sunday should have
received an e-mail from me this afternoon (Thursday), together with a
detailed list of those attending.
If you think you have booked in, but have not received today's e-mail,
please let me know. In particular, I am concerned that G-OKEV is not on my
list, although I seem to remember receiving an e-mail from the owner, but
cannot now find it. Anyone who e0-mailed me on the list, rather than to my
e-mail address, may have been overlooked.
See you all on 4 May - we hope!
David, Bryan and Paddy.

Paul,
I laid up a box, similar to the Throttle Lever Housing, to hold the
cylinders, But Jeff's idea is easier, and will give more options for
fitting.
Are you going to let us know the rationale for switching to
conventional gear?
In my mind, it is the prettiest configuration, and probably does not
give up much in speed to the mono.

Subject: | Conventional Tail Wheel Conversion |
Hi all,
I have had a number of "off forum" emails wondering why after nearly
800 hours of monowheel time am I changing to a conventional tail
dragger. Well the reason isn't anything sinister, where I have simply
given up on trying to land the darn thing !!
There are a few things that have prompted my down this route. I had
been doing a bit of research on the topic and it was becoming apparent
that there might not be a drag penalty with conventional gear,
actually after exchanging a few emails with Duncan I am beginning to
think that conventional gear might even have less drag.
Another advantage is that on the ground cooling is much improved. I
find I have a bit of a problem with oil temps bumping up near 250 f
in the summer time.
A few other factors are playing into it, my daughter is wanting to fly
the aircraft and I just can't get comfortable with the idea of her
having to come up to speed with landing it on the pavement. I think I
was probably 100 hours in before I started to feel comfortable.
Getting hull insurance on it with her as PIC would be near impossible.
Why not a Tri gear ? I am not prepared to pay the 40 pound weight penalty
What finally ticked me off was last September the port out rigger
jammed up, I realized it as the aircraft was rolling out so I flicked
the wing up, got it to lock but the violent action caused me to swing
the aircraft around to 90 degrees on the runway and I got a propeller
strike. It was minor, just grazing two blades by a few mm, but it
still put me out of action for 6 weeks and $1500.00 in the hole
I was so irritated by this that I promptly ordered a tail dragger
conversion. The other thing that interests me is that I suspect that
I can make it go faster. Without the wheel in place I can close up
the air outlet, and while I am about it re work the inlet, and re
route the exhaust. I am also speculating that the drag from the "half
wheel" exposed plus the opening is quite significant, perhaps more
than some nicely faired gear legs and wheel pants. Performance
numbers from Duncan suggest that this might be the case.
Lastly the electric flap drive will let get a little more flap travel
so I might be able to add a few degrees of negative reflex in the
flaps.
So, I guess I am going to be busy over the winter.
Cheers, Paul
