Sorry to tell you this Rick, but if you think the layup you just did was
"difficult" you have no idea what lies ahead. Were Mother Theresa to
attempt these layups, even she would probably be tempted to utter a few

Hello Rick,
A trick I use on hard-to-reach spots (LongEZ /canard builder) is to
make "poor man's prepreg" with the BID. It might work well for you.
First, make a pattern for the layup using a piece of drop cloth
plastic. I use 2 mil plastic for my patterns but have seen folks use
4 mil. You can cram the plastic sheet into nooks/crannies and then
mark any creases with a Sharpie. Trim the excess with a pair of
scissors and you end up with a "paperdoll" pattern for your BID cloth.
Next, rough cut the BID cloth about 2" oversize relative to your
"paperdoll" pattern. Also, cut two more pieces of drop cloth plastic
a tad bit bigger than the BID.
Write "OUT" with your Sharpie marker one one of the big plastic sheets
and trace the "paperdoll" onto it. Place this piece face-down (i.e. -
with the "OUT" facing out) and lay your first BID ply on top at a 45
relative to the pattern. Wet out the first BID ply thoroughly and
follow it with the second BID ply. Once your plies are wet, put the
other sheet of plastic onto the top of the pile, making a sandwich of
wet BID between two sheets of drop cloth.
Use a squeegee (or Bondo spreader, thick postcard, tongue depressor,
rolling pin, etc.) to gently chase any air or excess epoxy to the
edges. Don't pull too much resin out but do your best to get rid of
any air bubbles. Using a hair dryer to gently warm the resin will get
it to flow better in cool weather.
Once you finish chasing air bubbles out, turn the whole sandwich over
so you can see your "OUT" plus the "paperdoll" pattern outline. Trim
the BID sandwich along the pattern lines with scissors, turn the
sandwich over again ("OUT" side down), and peel the top sheet of
plastic off of the sandwich.
Transfer the whole stack (BID, BID, "OUT" plastic) into the tunnel and
position/stipple/squeegee the layup in place. The plastic will help
keep the BID from folding back onto itself AND will keep you from
getting covered in epoxy. Once the BID is where you want it, peel the
"OUT" plastic off and stipple any stubborn spots. Add peel ply to the
edges if you want.
Good luck!

Subject: | Re: Reenforcement of baggage bays |
This is how I did it - after being quite frustrated at getting the
pieces to fit in the box. The idea is to have a "basket" of fiberglass
to spread the load - in particular the most load is in the rear corner
toward the center (looking downward at 4 o'clock, with 12 o'clock
pointing forward) since when landing the gear is pushed in this
direction (unless of course you land backwards.) So what I did was:
1. put in the uni - from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock - around the back
corners - it fits fine with no bubbles
2. put in two corners of bid from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock in rear center
corner
3. run an 8 inch layer of bid on the bottom of the box cross-wise from 9
o'clock to 3 o'clock up the sides of the center tunnel and the sides of
the canoe (about 8 inches high).
4. Run an 8" wide piece of bid fore and aft centered over the gear leg
hole and up the sides about 8 inches
5. Run another 8" piece on the inside (3 o'clock) fore and aft and up
the sides - overlapping #4 a bit
6. Do #3 again.
7. Do #4 again.
8. Do #5 again.
9. Do #2. again.
10. Put in three layers of bid behind the box from the top and onto the
floor of the canoe.
This means the corner which takes the most stress will have four layers
of bid and two layers of uni inside the box, and three layers on the
back of the box. These layers will be tied to four layers, two running
fore and aft and 2 running crosswise -
I don't think this will break - the layers are interwoven, and the
reinforced and overlapping corners spread the load over the entire
corner and tie it to the rest of the box.
In addition I never make bad landings ( :-) ) but if someone does I
still don't think it will break. I may pay a slight weight penalty for
this - but at best it is a few ounces versus the manual approach -

Subject: | Unlatched Outrigger |
I have had an incident with my Europa (G-MIME) due to an outrigger not
being latched down for landing. I thought members of the forum with
monowheel Europas would like information of this event to help them
consider whether this event has any learning points for them.
Background
G-MIME has 220hrs and has had no previous history of this problem
since its permit was issued in 2001. It has the latest outrigger mod
which improves the mounting and lubricates the pivot. The legs were
able to move freely before and after the incident. It was also fitted
with microswitches to sense when the outriggers were locked down (more
of that later!!).
The Incident
I was landing on runway 26 at Caernarfon at 12.35pm local time on
Sunday 13th July in excellent weather conditions with a surface wind of
230/8kts. The landing was smooth and nothing was noticed until full
aileron authority was lost at about 20-30kts. At this point the right
wing dropped. I applied full left aileron but was unable to prevent the
right wing tip touching the runway. The aircraft veered rapidly to the
left and it temporarily pitched just sufficient for the propeller to
graze the runway stopping the engine. The aircraft left the runway
surface and settled back onto its tailwheel on the grass.
Initial Analysis
The only damage was grazing to the leading edge tips of the propeller
blades, the underside of the starboard wingtip and the front of the
starboard outrigger spat.
The aircraft ended up in a normal parked attitude. On exiting the
aircraft I lifted the starboard wing only to find that the outrigger
was now locked down. I put this down to the slight drop from the runway
surface onto the grass allowing the outrigger to spring forward.
Further examination of the outrigger gave no clue as to why the
outrigger didnt lock down initially.
The aircraft is fitted with a slipper clutch so no check of the
crankshaft was deemed necessary.
Subsequent Events
The support by all aviators and the ground services at Caernarfon was
superb. In particular a local PFA inspector (Druid Petrie) was
exceptional. Without his help the aircraft would have still been at
Caernarfon now. A local flexwing microlight pilot offered me the use of
his Arplast ground adjustable prop. We initially accepted his offer
until it was realised that in pusher mode these props rotate in the
wrong direction for a tractor application. Druid then rang around and
found a Warpdrive prop on a Europa which was out of permit. Although
this was a 45 minute drive away he collected the prop, adjusted the
blade angle for the extra power of my 912S engine and fitted it to my
Europa. During the afternoon a friend of mine with a Mooney kindly
flew over in case we needed a lift back to Wiltshire. We finally left
Caernarfon at 7.10pm arriving back at Lydeway at 8.25pm.
Learning Points
As I said earlier I had fitted microswitches to enable me to know when
the outriggers are locked down as this cannot be confirmed visually.
Last year I had a few occasions when there has been a problem with the
earth return cable preventing both lights from illuminating. I had been
meaning to address this problem but as the problem had not re-occurred
so far this season I had planned to defer this maintenance until the
next service. This modification is a personal one and is not required
by the LAA. It was bad luck that this problem reoccurred at start-up
out of Lydeway on Sunday. Ironically the system worked fine for the
subsequent return sector to Lydeway which was very reassuring for the
landing. I have learnt that having an indication showing when the
outriggers are locked down is a very valuable asset. I was also unlucky
in that the direction of the wind was such that the slight crosswind
was from the wrong side. Had it either been the other outrigger or the
wind from the starboard side I might have been able to raise the wing,
take-off again and try reselecting the landing gear down. There have
been incidents of outriggers being sluggish to latch down when the gear
is lowered close to maximum speed (83kts). In this case I was slowed up
by some flexwings ahead of me in the circuit so the gear wasnt lowered
until 65kts so this was not an issue. I am now even more convinced than
ever that a system which indicates when the outriggers are locked down
is a worthwhile addition to monowheel Europas.
I was touched by the kindness of other pilots in their assistance
during this stressful afternoon. However the hero of the day was Druid
whose determined and professional approach to the problem ensured that
the optimal solution was achieved. Caernarfon is a great place to fly
to and I would encourage others to fly there. I shall certainly be
flying back there as and when the weather permits. Perhaps we might
arrange a DOTH there in the near future.
Regards
Nigel Charles

Hello All,
Well with only two weeks before the start of Airventure it has been really quite
on forum. Is anyone planning on attending??? If all goes to plan N28ET will
be flying out on Saturday from Las Vegas, NV, arriving Sunday morning and remaining
until Friday or Saturday. I am planning on camping with my plane.

You guys flying 914's, what are you seeing on your normal operating range for EGTs?
What is the max set at by Rotax? I would think this information would be
in the manuals but I have yet to find it. Any personal experience would be
great. I ran my 914 yesterday and had temps as high as 1530 around 4300 rpm.
I posted this on the Rotax engines forum but no replies...I figured this forum
would have better results.

Hello and thank you to the many who answered my call for help.
To clarify, the "3mm" tubing was in fact standard 'bullet' connector females
- ones I've used since maybe 1965......... ah, well.
I see now that I must connect the bullets with 0.75sqmm wire, covered with
coax sheath grounded to engine bolt one end and the switch base (which is to
be grounded to common earth).
So onward and upward, and thabnks again, fellows!

I found the information needed. It is listed in a document provided on www.rotax-owner.com called "Understanding the 914". I lists the max EGT as 1742 degrees F and a normal EGT of 1652 degrees F. Seems a bit warm but I am used to the 1350 degrees of a Lyc.

N262Ae and I will not be attending Oshkosh this year. We are about to finish
a lake house project and between that and getting one kid ready for College
there is just not enough time to make it up. Now if you need a place to come
for a Europa Fly-in this year I have a shiny new lake house and all are
welcome to come hang out! Are there plans yet for a labor day Europa fly-in?

Flying great just not to OSH 2008 :(
