Subject: | Broken outrigger leg |
Dear all,
I had my starboard outrigger leg snap off on landing, about a year ago.
This was at Nairobi (Kenya) Wilson airport, where the plane is based,
and coming in from a 3 hour flight. On touchdown, I realised a problem
as the wing went down, and opened up the throttle, took off again. Then
called the tower, did a low pass, the engineer confirmed that the 'leg
was not there'; the following landing aircraft reported 'debris on the
runway... my outrigger!'. After circling a bit, the engineer lined up
about 15 people along the runway to catch the wing on landing. On
landing, all these guys ran very fast to catch it, but actually the
plane stayed level, as the C of G (with me in pilots seat, no pax) was
within the triangle of the maingear, tailwheel and left hand outrigger.
Inspection showed the starboard outrigger had snapped off right at the
holder, or whatever its is called. I now inspect the outrigger legs at
this point, as part of pre-flight.
Best to all and happy flying.

sorry tale Kevin!
I hope something good comes out of it - like a service life for replacement
or some new leg material.
Hope rest of prop is OK
Best Wishes and GOOD LUCK from now on

Hi Folks,
The only day I can do this week is Tuesday. The weather looks workable,
especially earlier rather than later, so how about a DOTH to Shobdon.
Voucher in Pilot - 1200ish.

Subject: | Prop strike - BEWARE! |
Very sorry to hear about your prop strike, Kevin.
Unfortunately, the following comment on the forum is not correct, even
if you have the slipper clutch:
At least with the Rotax if there is no runout problem on the prop flange
you
can just bolt up a new set of blades and go again...not sure what
airmaster
advises though.
Attached please find a Rotax Service Letter addressing prop strikes, and
a relevant page in the most recent version of the Line Maintenance
Manual re. inspections, all of which shall be carried out by authorized
service personnel.
In addition to this, the Scandinavian repair center for Rotax advises
that the roller bearing for the propeller shaft, mounted in the engine
crank case, shall be replaced.
This information may come as a surprise to some, as it did to me when I
first heard about it an authorized Rotax maintenance course. I held the
fairly common misconception that if you have the slipper clutch, just
replace the prop. NOT SO! The advantage, though, is that with slipper
clutch the probability of damage to the gear box or the crankshaft is
significantly reduced, but not eliminated. Thorough inspection
according to the Rotax SL/Maintenance manual is mandatory, however. A
Katana with 912S with slipper clutch here in Norway recently had a prop
strike with engine damage as a result - in some instances, the damage
occurs before the clutch slips, the repair center told me. Prop strike
at idle RPM is sometimes worse than at high RPM, they added.

My port outrigger leg broke in the middle while reversing the plane on the trailer,
after an engine check. 0 flying hours. Since the starboard wing was not fitted,
quite some weight hit my wife's leg. She and the leg did not like that.
Her leg however did not break. I reported that back to the factory, and on their
request sent the broken ends to check. Never heard anything about a reason
though. Some reasoning led to the conclusion that the nylon can dry out if the
air humidity is very low on average.

Kevin,
Sorry for your mishap! It seems this could happen to all of us
monowheel drivers and I am very concerned about that happening to me.
The consequences could even be more serious than a broken prop,
especially on a narrow mountain or farm strip bordered by fences,
ditches or trees. Relying on the random quality of a piece of nylon is
not satisfying.
Has any one engineered a replacement rod made of other material such as
glassfiber or metal ? Some motorgliders are using spring steel rods
successfully. It seems to me that the possible failure of those
materials under extreme load, fatigue or aging would be a lot more
predictable than with the supplied nylon outriggers.
Regards
Remi
<<I broke right where it meets the alum. mount.
I didn't hit anything. Was turning right at fast walking speed when the
left wing went down and made noise, my instinct was to pull the brake
lever that my hand was already on. Maybe if I didn't touch the
brake...>>>

Remi, It isn't clear to me that being without one or even both outriggers
should be much of a disaster other than in the most exceptional
circumstances. Gliders after all always land without any, just keeping the
plane level & pointing in roughly the right direction until it stops, when
it gently subsides on to one or other wingtip. If anything the loss of an
outrigger should help to keep that wing up as the other will be slightly
weighed down. As we are as often as not on one or other outrigger wheel
during the take off & landing run, dealing with the very small amount of
drag on a solitary outrigger shouldn't be too difficult. I wouldn't look for
alternatives, just perhaps think of taking a spare if embarking on a long
tour.

Have just run the engine for the first time (914). All seems well with
exception of rotax tacho. Advancing throttle from 'rough running' to
just smooth, the tacho jumps from <2000rpm to 4000rpm - numbers which
I just don't believe. Anyone got any thoughts?
Unfortunately the rest of our engine instruments are a BMA EFIS1 which
doesn't easily support an alternative tacho for the rotax.

the calibration seems to varie with the gap of the sense coil, I once
set clearance to the book, (912) above 4000 the reading was full scale.
Not good those Rotax tachos, we used a Grand Rapids EMI which was perfect.

Hi! Paddy
No problems no one can be right all the time and in my opinion the
weather forecasts were way out. Certainly I wouldn't have gone if I'd
realized there would be snow and low cloud base.
Hope your trip to OZ is more successful.Have a great time.
Best regards

I thank Jim Butcher had the same problem. He has the Blue Mtn EFIS and was
having- some problems with the tach reading incorrect.
-
I have not seen any postings from him lately.

Jim are you still out there ???
