I believe a few have, to deal with CofG issues, rather than adding ballast to the rear they used the battery. Most seem to have run the cables under the door sill. If yours is a trike or conventional gear you could run the cables through the tunnel. craig -----Original Message----- From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com]On Behalf Of rparigor@suffolk.lib.ny.us Sent: Wednesday, 31 December 2008 6:30 AM Subject: Europa-List: Has anyone mounted their battery aft of baggage bulkhead? Has anyone mounted their battery aft of baggage bulkhead? Have a picture or could you describe how you mounted? Any other comments? I descided on a Odyssey PC545 using #4 aluminium wire. I put my battery aft of the baggage compartment to help compensate for the moment of the VP prop. Even with a trigear I would suggest that running the battery cable under the door sill is a good idea for 2 reasons. Firstly it is a more direct route to the starter reducing cable length and minimising bends in the cable. Secondly glassing ducting tube to the door sill helps to stiffen it. In my opinion this is an area which needs reinforcing anyway as a lot of load is placed on this area when getting in or out of the aircraft. In the UK it is possible to buy oval ducting tubing which is just a perfect size for #4 cable. If it is cut to a length to just fit between the aft bulkhead and the firewall it can be glassed in position and it is then an easy job to end feed #4 cable. I used more of this ducting on the port side in a similar way for other for/aft wiring. It may have been possible in my case to leave the battery in the engine compartment. However I felt the pro's and con's of an aft battery location weighed in the favour of an aft battery location. My reasons were as follows:- Forward Battery Location Shorter cable - less weight (about 1.5lb saving), less voltage drop Quicker and easier installation. Rear Battery Location C of G further aft gives more efficient cruising and,in the case of the monowheel, easier handling during T/O and landing. It is easier to arrange an external power connection (important in the case of the need for a jump start). The battery is kept away from heat and vibration. I have been considering something like those employed on large airliners. Obviously not that large, but mounted inside the wing with polycarbonate cover, about 1.5 metres from the root, with an access panel underneath. craig ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Matronics Email List Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post A New Message europa-list@matronics.com UN/SUBSCRIBE http://www.matronics.com/subscription List FAQ http://www.matronics.com/FAQ/Europa-List.htm Web Forum Interface To Lists http://forums.matronics.com Matronics List Wiki http://wiki.matronics.com Full Archive Search Engine http://www.matronics.com/search 7-Day List Browse http://www.matronics.com/browse/europa-list Browse Digests http://www.matronics.com/digest/europa-list Browse Other Lists http://www.matronics.com/browse Live Online Chat! http://www.matronics.com/chat Archive Downloading http://www.matronics.com/archives Photo Share http://www.matronics.com/photoshare Other Email Lists http://www.matronics.com/emaillists Contributions http://www.matronics.com/contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These Email List Services are sponsored solely by Matronics and through the generous Contributions of its members.
