There are several other Europas with Jabiru engines either flying or currently under construction in the USA. FWIW, I'm very pleased with the engine. It's powerful, quiet and I really like the looks of the longer cowl. I've also read that the hydraulic lifer version of the 3300 passed JAR certification recently. My cowls and FWF package were supplied by Andy Silvester and Suncoast Sportplanes. Andy shut his business down a while back, but I'm told by the Jab dealer out in CA that he has access to Andy's cowl molds and would be willing to produce "Jabiropa" FWF kits if there is interest. I discussed my install with him last week and I'm in the process of putting together a package of info for him that will aid him in formulating a FWF package based on what I did. Contact me off list and I'll shoot you some photos. Regards, John Lawton Whitwell, TN (TN89) N245E - Flying **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. (If you don't know who Wilma or Rowland is, just delete this and move on.) Wilma Carson died on the morning of Tuesday 13th Jan about 08:00. We had a good Christmas day together, but she became ill on 26th Dec with a severely distended abdomen and was unable to eat or drink without vomiting since then. After it became clear that it was not just her usual sort of digestive problem or a bad stomach bug, she was admitted to hospital on Monday 5th January with a suspected bowel obstruction, and was re-hydrated on a drip. Various tests indicated cancer in both abdomen and ovaries. She became progressively weaker, and although uncomfortable was not in any pain. Although shocked by the diagnosis (as we all were), she was philosophical about it, and a couple of days before she died said that if she did not survive she would be content as she felt she had achieved her life's purpose of spiritual union. Please contact me direct if you want to know about funeral arrangements. Issue of the death certificate (and thus funeral planning) has been delayed by the need for a post-mortem. regards Rowland -- | Wilma & Rowland Carson http://home.clara.net/rowil/ | ... that's Rowland with a 'w' ... ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 10:53:52 AM PST US From: Graham Singleton Subject: Re: Europa-List: Trio Altitude Hold. There have been proposals made to raise the headrests and also to hinge additional height from behind to lift the d irection of the belts. However they all seem to impede access some extent. Why cannot we have a restraint point in the fuselage shell situated well be hind, and at a little lower level than the fuel filler=3F This would still not be perfect as the line of restraint would be toward a little inboard of directly behind the crew members, but not much. The pair of restraint points I am proposing can be set as follows:- Measure inside the fuselage and mark a location 18=22 behind the door frame a nd 15=22 up from the top edge of the lower fuselage shell at the joint line. You will find this spot to be about 6=22 above the top of the corresponding h eadrest and about midway between the door frame and the sloping wall of the baggage bay. There is good space around this to reinforce the shell of the fuselage with say 2 plies of bid approx 12=22 square, an aluminium plate, and perhaps 4 o r more plies of bid of decreasing sizes after the first (say 2=22 less on eac h one). I have noted that quite large plates have been used in the head rests but m uch smaller ones in the fuselage sides for the lap belts. Perhaps the new o nes ( 5=22x3=22 as in the headrests or smaller=3F) could be perforated for better adhesion and set in flox. Now, if there is a qualified person willing to confirm the safety of this propo sed modification, then at least I, and I guess quite a few more builders, w ill be pleased to transfer their bolts and washers from the headrests! Keep in mind that when those attachments are called upon for integrity, there could be two "large" passengers doing the tugging, and it may not just be forward loads, could be negative, and or side loaded. As far as the attachments go, forward tugging will not only try tearing out with forward loading, but downward loading as well. I ground some numbers and did a reasonable amount of destructive testing and came up with what I feel has a good chance of doing what I think a shoulder should do if called upon: See Rollbar/Shoulder Harness in two albums: http://www.europaowners.org/modules.php?set_albumName=Begin-06-2003&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php Lets just do a simple calculation, take a 200lb pilot, lets say 1/2 the weight is on shoulder harness and take a 10 G stop, that's 2000lbs, now if the shoulder harness was pulling at a 45 degree angle (that it shouldn't be doing, recommended is 30 positive and 5 negative), that's pulling on attachment point 4000lbs. Will your attachment be able to withstand 2 tons? I forget the exact numbers I used, but did research quite a bit to come up with them and will provide if required. My simple calculation may be quite a bit off, I forget the details, but there is a good chance that it is not 50% off. If for the most part the loads are going to be in the forward direction, UNI is a good choice for majority of frontal loading. We took advantage of the aft door sill which when reinforced is a very strong structure. Ron Parigoris BTW I think it's Steve Crimms Europa (now sold, forget Builder's name) has a metal plate glassed in place, I think similar to what you propose. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Matronics Email List Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post A New Message europa-list@matronics.com UN/SUBSCRIBE http://www.matronics.com/subscription List FAQ http://www.matronics.com/FAQ/Europa-List.htm Web Forum Interface To Lists http://forums.matronics.com Matronics List Wiki http://wiki.matronics.com Full Archive Search Engine http://www.matronics.com/search 7-Day List Browse http://www.matronics.com/browse/europa-list Browse Digests http://www.matronics.com/digest/europa-list Browse Other Lists http://www.matronics.com/browse Live Online Chat! http://www.matronics.com/chat Archive Downloading http://www.matronics.com/archives Photo Share http://www.matronics.com/photoshare Other Email Lists http://www.matronics.com/emaillists Contributions http://www.matronics.com/contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These Email List Services are sponsored solely by Matronics and through the generous Contributions of its members.
