A friend of mine is looking for a part finished kit in the UK, anyone
know of one for sale at a negotiable price? Would prefer an XS tri gear
but any Europa considered, he has flown a one briefly and is very keen
to own one before he gets too old.

PS if he doesn't buy a kit, I'll ask him to donate a few quid to the

That reminds me of the story of the stuck PA switch in the airliner
cockpit which allowed the passengers to hear the captain saying to
the co-pilot after landing, "What I need now is a cold beer and a hot
woman". When the stewardess hurried to the cockpit to tell the
captain what had happened, she was stopped by an elderly passenger
who said, "don't forget the cold beer, dear".

Hi All,
All of this cold weather lately has me planning to attend SnF in sunny
Lakeland. I think it may be time to start planning a good old fashion
"Engineering" meeting of the sort familiar to generations of Flight Crafters
and Custom Flight Creations alumni! Of course all are welcome.
Europa is planning a big presence at SnF this year. I don't yet know their
schedule for events, but I'd like to invite Dave Stanbridge to the party, er
meeting.
Anyone else planning to go this year?

Bud's Law: All loose nuts and bolts always fall under the bench, in the
most inaccessible part of the flight controls or instrument panel, or
under that slight gap in the cockpit module you didn't fill or leave
access to.
As for the plug, argh.

Bud:
Thanks for the advice. Two good points - I too realised that it's
easier to insert with the plug and socket in the hand, but the b$%^&r
still won't align. and at the same time the flathead machine bolts
loosened and clattered to the cockpit floor and bounced into the
underseat locker.....like most of my events.
I believe I will follow your suggestion and insert the fast-ons singly
without the big plug - and perhaps rotate the regulator. It is cooled by
a small NACA dut built into the cowling roof but needs protection in
case of rain enroute I suppose. I guess I could smother the contacts
with ShoeGoo and cut them free later on if needed.

Hi Ira
Yes myself and Ray will be along Friday and Saturday or Sunday. Two years
ago a load of Brits went out on the Saturday night to a fine American
cultural institution nearby call I think "Hooters". Seemed to remember it
was quite an 'interesting' evening!
It was the last meal I had with William before his and Paul's fatal accident
so I wouldn't mind raising a bottle or two to their memory.
No doubt Paddy, Nigel, Steve etc will find themselves in Florida around that
time.
See you there.

(a) Thanks for the rapid replies regarding the trouble I was having with
the #$%^& regulator plug carrying the various wires, which plugs up into the
regulator body.
(b) As with many of my minor projects, first I couldn't get the #$%^
fast-ons in, and now that I've decided to eliminate the plug, I can't get
them out.
(c) Nevertheless even if it means destroying the plastic plug, I am
determined to find an alternative, because,
(d) the rotten plug is meant to 'capture' the fast-on female connectors -
which it does - is badly designed in that it does not prevent slight
rotation of the females which in turn frustrates the joining of females in
the plug to males in the regulator body. When such occurs, I usually make 5
tries, using whatever subterfuge accomplishes the feat. I made 10 tries here
but success evaded me. My bride has now said she won't fly in it because
it's built using language meant to destroy the earth.
(e) I will eliminate the plug and substitute a guard which ensures
continual engagement and protects against rain etc.
Case closed - I hope.
Ferg

Well, I don't know.
I put out a panic call, answered by several, because I couldn't insert the
gang 'plug' into the bottom of the Ducati Regulator. The reason was
the'fast-ons' were allowed to rotate slightly which prevented proper
insertion - poor design.
Anyway, the advice given was solid and, having wasted half the
day fussing, I decided to abandon the plug, extract the fast-ons from it and
insert them independently into the male fittings in the body of the
regulator. Then the #$%^&'s wouldn't come out, so I clipped the wires at the
entry intent on refitting them with new fast-ons.
Once the plug was free, I noticed a small indent adjacent to the
plug's entry slots and the result convinced me to place this message (in
lieu of shooting someone). The indent permits one to extract the fast-on by
pressing a small tab down the indent, which turned, allows the tab to press
a locking tab inward and freeing the fast-on.
Of course, too late we get smart. However, I have chronicled
this brilliant discovery in the europa owners' list:
http://www.europaowners.org/
If you're not familiar, look for "Gallery" at the end of the
first line of choices, and then go down the first page of authors till you
find "Ferg Kyle". It should be in their somewhere, under THE DUCATI.
AFFAIR.....
Well, actually I've seem to have put it in its own album, sorry.
Cheers, Ferg
PS SteveD - save me! How do I get the thing into my own album?

Dan,
An update on the fuel vent and fuel slop issue.
I filled the aircraft this morning. At the same time I again filled
the area behind the passenger with about a gallon of avgas. BUT, this
time I was able to determine the source of the problem. It was NOT
the vent system. When I was planning to install the aux fuel tank, I
put in all the fittings. Later, my wife explained that if I put the
aux tank in, she wasn't flying. She liked the fact that the Europa
would have to stop every three hours, she didn't want the ability to
fly for 5+ hours. Also, any reduction in baggage payload was TOTALLY
unacceptable. So, no aux tank. I pretty much stopped installing.
Dumb move. I had installed the vent hose and self-closing fitting for
the aux tank, but I didn't put the hose and self-closing fitting on
the fuel inlet. The little barb fitting was just sticking out between
the main fuel inlet and the upper vent fitting. (BTW, remember, 8
folks, all homebuilders, went over this aircraft with fine-toothed
combs and all missed this one) When I'd run fuel in too fast one of
the ways to relieve pressure was to blow fuel out that little barbed
fitting and into the back well area. Also, when the tank was filled,
any excess fuel burbled out of the little barbed fitting into this area.
By installing the tube with the self closing fitting the fuel spill
issue should be corrected. The aircraft is presently open and
allowing any residual fuel to evaporate.
This does not correct the slow fuel vent problem. When filling today,
I noticed that the tank was venting out of the normal vent system. I
could tell because it would occasionally burp out a significant
quantity of fuel. The fuel wasn't an issue as it stayed in the fuel
filler and just ran back into the tank. Still, the vent is slow and
can't keep up with the ability of of the pump to introduce fuel into
the tank. If you have any way to increase the size of the vent lines
(maybe 3/8"?), I'd recommend doing it.
I'm adding the europa-list to the address because I'd like to post
this on my site. Unfortunaltely my main computer with all my good
software crapped out on Thursday while I was uploading first flight
video to You Tube. Had to take it into the Apple Store for fix'n'.
Won't be able to do any further image work and upload till the Big Mac
is back at home. I'm hoping that it will be ready on Sunday or Monday.
