Hi Fred Thx. for the reply. "Given the space above the spar provided by the wing root fairing, why would you not go w/ the recommendation in the manual?" I can agree with what is recommended in manual for mypitot, static, and can also follow suit with AOA and Stall warner tube locations. My real question is with the high voltage wires for the strobe system that I have never seen a factory recommended location for power supply or wire run. I have a Kunzleman strobe with one power supply that is mounted in the fuse. Running the high voltage wires, even though they are shielded right next to the com coax RG-400 cableI am not thrilled about. Thus if I mount power supply on the starboard baggage rib, would need to run high voltage wires along seam of fuse till forward of the rear of seats, then could go down and out the suggested area Europa recommends for pitot and static tubes. They would parallel my positive battery wire on the starboard and the negative battery wire on the port side. I could also mount power supply just aft of the wheel well mud guard, but kind of a pain to mount and running power in and high voltage out can be done, but kinda labor intensive. Or I can mount power supply on the starboard baggage rib, easy to mount, easy to access and run high voltage wires on the bottom of the baggage shelf outboard next to the fuse and above the flap arm and make a very short run when it exits the front face of the baggage bay shelf and run out of fuse slightly above and slightly aft of the rear lift pin mounting pad. High voltage would be clear of antenna and battery cables. This is what I am kinda thinking at the moment. I think it can be done without jeopardizing the strength of the rear lift pin area in a meaningful way, but would feel a lot better if someone else has experience doing this and not having rear lift pin failure. From: "flyingphil2" <ptiller@lolacars.com>
Hi, I'm planning on doing Mod 64b in due course. I'm wondering how much to stick to the manual ahead of this though as I can see the sizes of various parts being wrong. If the top half of the fuselage is raised by 2" at the front, what happens to the following: a. Rear Fuselage bulkhead. b. Pitch Control Stop / Pushrod containment bulkhead. c. Baggage Bay rear bulkhead. d. Fuel Filler pipe. I presume that if I build all of the above to the manual then none of them will reach when the top goes on in the raised position. What have people done about the items above or does the Mod 64b package include parts to adapt these? Thanks, Phil Visit - www.EuropaOwners.org

I have recently bought the kit from Europa to reposition the gas strut to cure the bulging at the top rear corner of the doors. It seems a little OTT as it requires me to glue on a complete back section to the door frame just to install the lug. I wondered if I might be able to fabricate a small aluminium lug and rivet it onto the existing frame instead to take the lower fixing for the gas strut? Any suggestions? Richard Iddon G-RIXS

Richard, Go to my website under accessories and tips. My solution is there. It's been working for years. When Andy Draper looked at my mod, he tried to make it perfect. It is unfortunate that it is perfectly heavy, much heavier and harder to finish when complete... Getting the geometry right is the key. I make a piece of aluminum that is the length of a almost completely compressed strut ( 8 inches or so) and use it as a guide. I am very big on jigs and fixtures which many are not. Getting the clearances right takes some time. It takes me about 3 hours to do the whole mod using super glue vice 5 minute... Don't use superglue if the glass is in, just incase you get sloppy, which is easy to do Some are confused about the top hole for the ball stud, but it is easier than I have stated in my instructions. Mark a line down the center of the angle in the upper door recess. Measure out and down one inch. Make a hole. Hi Ira, Sorry to hear that you will not fly to Sun N Fun. An option if you do not enjoy the hustle and bustle on the main flight line is to put the plane in the Home Built Camping area. It is not unusual to have planes there with no tent. Cheers, John

Hello All Again, While Ira is coordinating the engineering meeting at Sun-n-Fun, I'm working the not on the web folks who may not be aware of the fly-in. I am making the list of folks normally not on the web and getting them in the loop. >From the Factory, to repeat my previous posting: During Sun 'n Fun (April 21-26,2009) we plan the following: Our site location is N-99 and 100 which is on the main thorough fare off of building A. We will have Homer Baker's (my first project) there with a motor glider wing and display the new LSA wing prototype. If something unforeseen happens we have backups. Company Representatives are of course: Dave Stanbridge, owner of Europa, now part of Swift Technology Group. Mike McLean from Sales John Wheeler from Sales and Yours truly. Jeff and Mary Behrens have committed to help as has Steve Pitt. Jerry Hope is working to be there also. I hope all our owners will be there for the week, weather, time and business permitting. We are in the final stages of coordinating our activities (fighter pilot term: Getting our s--t together). Rebecca Hanes from marketing and I have a great plan for the display as well as new brochures, show price lists and handouts. A Europa Forum to discuss where we are going is in the works (day to be decided based on your attendance plans and the forum schedule). Local "Engineering" meetings of course will occur almost daily. Our print and electronic ads are in production both here and abroad. (In the US you'll see the full page ads in Kitplanes, Sun-n-Fun magazine, AvWeb, etc. for the show alone. More advertising to follow.) Flights for prospective buyers and builders is not out of the question. For those flying in, transportation to lodging can be coordinated with me as I will have a vehicle on site. In the past year, we are seeing buyers who were formerly sitting on the fence for a number of years now coming forward to buy! Needless to say, we are all happy, as you should be too. I, of course, would love to see a full row of Europas at the show. I will watch those coordinating with Ira and will make myself available if you have special needs. My job will be to bang the phone and contact our other owners Ira can't reach through the web. If you know a builder or owner in your area, team up for the event. The more the merrier. Review the www.sun-n-fun.org<http://www.sun-n-fun.org/> website for camping considerations. They have a new website, and although it is still a work in progress, they are working hard to get it together. If you are sitting on the fence, come on down and bring sun screen (Fighter pilot term: Get your s--t together, make a hole in your schedule, and get some sun.) This is a great time and place to share our building and flying experiences. There is new excitement and optimism at Europa. Your support and activities over these last few years is a large part of the why Europa is turning around. I hope to see you all at the show. Ron, By chance, I'm wrestling w/ the same issues, but I had not thought about the strobes before zapping off my curt reply. I will be penetrating the fuselage aft of the spar for my strobe wires. My large radius wing root fairings will enable the hole to be outside of the rear lift pin reinforcement, though even without them, I don't think a hole of the size we're talking about will have any structural ramifications (but of course I do NOT speak from direct experience). My power supply will also be in the stbd baggage bay. Good Luck, Fred -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Subject: How to route pitot and static around wing flange?
    From: rparigor@suffolk.lib.ny.us
Just inserted port wing. The wing flange comes within 1/16" of the fuse near the spar. Need to gonear the front lift pin before gap gets wide enough to fit tubing. How are you supposed to get the pitot and static lines above the wing flange so you can sneak them under fairing and above spar? Then once aft of spar, need to go far aft before again there is enough space to sneak tubing down. I am not too keen on filing flange, but perhaps that is what is supposed to be done? Or?? Thx. A lot of companies are being nailed for noncompliance with export regulations. McMaster-Carr had an encounter back in 2003, which is why I think they stopped shipping to Canada and elsewhere. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced today that McMaster-Carr Supply Company (McMaster-Carr), an Elmhurst, Illinois supplier of industrial and commercial hardware, has agreed to pay an $8,000 civil penalty to settle allegations that McMaster-Carr committed eight violations of the antiboycott provisions of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security charged that McMaster-Carr failed to report its receipt of boycott-related requests within the time period required by the EAR. The alleged violations occurred in eight transactions involving sales of goods from the United States to Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. McMaster-Carr voluntarily disclosed the alleged violations to the Department. Allready some 3 years ago Finland was allready on the suspect list, at least an order from me was refused. Well, maybe if somebody clever starts looking why US export struggles... Not the my 40 $ did matter anything of course :-) Regards, Jos Okhuijsen Visit - www.EuropaOwners.org

    Subject: Europa First Flight Video
Friends, I have posted the video of the first flight of my Europa. For those who did not receive the first announcement: Wednesday, 2009 02 04, at 1845 hrs CST (0045Z) Europa Kit #A221 registered in the U.S.A. as N914XL took to flight for the first time from Denton County Municipal Airport (KDTO), Denton, Texas. N914XL was piloted most ably by Gary Platner, one of the finest pilots known by the builder. Mr. Platner flew the aircraft for 15 minutes overhead the airport performing a series of control tests as well as stalls gear/flaps up and gear/flaps down. The stalls broke straight ahead with no tendency to fall off to either side and the aircraft was in proper trim at all speeds tested (up to 130 kts indicated). Winds were from 150D at 5 kts gusting to 8 kts, temperature was 55F (13C), altimeter setting 29.87. The sun set before the builder was able to fly. It appears that I shall be able to make my own first flight this weekend as the weather has gone to p**p and it appears that it will remain such for the next several days. When the weather improves sufficiently and I am able to fly my own aircraft I will let you know. Until then, Here are the videos posted on You Tube. It's all because the 'Land of the Free' has become the 'Land of the Paranoi d' quite some time ago. And of course a paradise for bureaucrats with unlim ited budgets who have to find reasons for their existance. Notwithstanding, McMaster is easily the best merchant I have ever dealt with. I buy a lot of stuff from them for my research lab, and I find their customer service, shipping, and price is light years ahead of anyone else. I can't gush enough about Mcmaster. Well Bob, with only an architect's grasp of the math, it seems to me that you'd only be talking about 40 minutes/day...Fred do not archive -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
