Seems we should go through a few more hoops and fix more placards if we are
to use Mogas. I wonder whether one can claim grandfather rights if the plane
has already been running nicely on Mogas for 7 yrs!

A new section has been added under the Engineering banner : MOGAS - where
you will find information describing how to obtain clearance for an aircraft
to use unleaded Mogas.
http://www.lightaircraftassociation.co.uk/engineering/Mogas/mogas_main.html
There's a talk by Red Bull racing pilot, Steve Jones with chilli supper and
an auction at Roger Targett's hangar at Nympsfield on Saturday 28th Feb,
starting at 7 pm. Full details are in the back of the latest Light
Aviation. Call 01453 860861 to book.

This might well interest some of our European Europa folk. It seems that the
fly out that Hubert Eckl organised to Templehof last year was a great
success.

Since I have always been unhappy with the output of my landing lights and
their large appetite for power, I was happy to find some LED lights that
looked very promising. The lights from J.C. Whitney use about .5 amps and
their output is MUCH better than the old halogen ones. Every thing is great
until I try to transmit and then there is a huge amount of interference.
Any suggestions?

Run the power leads through a torroid, and put a capacitor on both ends
between the power lines.
Maybe just installing a capacitor of 100n over the power lines as close
as possible to the strobe power supply is already enough. If not, add
the torroids and more capacitors.
Ground the radio and the strobe power supply preferably at the same
spot. Use twisted pair power supply's. Do not power anything else from
the same leads (like nav lights).
Also, disconnect the antenna to find out if the receiver still picks up
the noise. If so, the noise comes in via the radio power supply. Use the
same filter (torroid plus capacitors) in the radio power leads to remedy it.
If using shielded cable, always shield at one end, and leave the other
end unattached.
Preferably use the Europa suggested COM antenna. This one has the best
noise rejection potential.
Make sure your coaxial antenna cable is properly RF-separated. You might
need to coil it up close to the antenna, or use a dozen or so torroids
over the cable (like proposed for the Europa antenna, but this applies
to all brands).

LED's use a much lower voltage than 12 volts. If I were to build a
powerfull LED system, I would use a switching power supply to avoid
converting to much voltage into heat. Switching power supplies are
notorious for their ability to generate EM interference.

Dear Europaphiles,
I know that this may be a little late for those of you who have already
bought their strobe power units, but my installation works well without
any interference. I have Whelen equipment and I mounted an HTS power
supply at each wing tip. They are mounted on removable panels on the
bottom surface. There is a weight penalty of about 1 pound compared to a
single HDA power supply in the fuselage but all the high voltage cables
are short and at the tip. No problems.

I made my own LED strobes. I modified a circuit for flashing lighthouse to
get the desired pulses and duration
basically its a 555 timer running a decade step counter to give you ten
possible "ON" positions for the strobes
then tapped off that on say pin 1 and 3 which gives you a nice quick double
pulse and and about 4 seconds off
time. this can be adjusted by the resistor on the 555 timer. This the drives
the LED strobe head which consists
of a 3x3 array of 280,000 mcd leds which makes it about the same size as
typical strobe, but you could make
it any shape you want just by moving the LED's around. The LED's are running
on 12v but they are set up in series. Its took a little bit of fiddling but
after 2 test runs I got the resistance correct and they ran for 2 months
on a car battery before the battery went flat. As for brightness, I would
say they are equally as bright as a
comercial strobe unit. given the slight overdiving of the leds they should
be around 3000 candle power per pulse.
they are easily visible in full sun enough to not be desirable to look at.

Subject: | Mod 73 - a safer approach mandrel |
Below is the message Rob Houseman originally sent when he made his fabricated aluminum
mandrel and retainer. It has been through a few hands but I have finished
with it and am making it available to anyone who need to use it. Contact
me and I will send it to the first asker. Thanks, Rob.

Id like to think that I am not the only builder to have found a way to permanently
bond the tailplanes to the torque tubes.
After struggling to forcibly remove the tailplanes (which required both a large
pry bar and sufficient heat) after my first attempt at following the factorys
procedure, I decided that there is a much safer way to do the job. Substitute
a mandrel for the torque tube and do the work on the work bench instead on
the airplane. The attached drawings show how I did this.
The epoxy still bonded the tailplane to the mandrel, even with plenty of wheel
bearing grease on the mandrel and frequent rotation of the mandrel while the epoxy
cured, but now I had a means to apply force against the rib via a screw into
the outer mandrel section and a closed end tube against the rib (not shown
in the drawings).
In addition to using the mandrel instead of the torque tube I fabricated an aluminum
retainer rather than rely on the fiberglass-epoxy layup alone to retain
TP06, but this is probably unnecessary.
For anyone who wants to use this method I will provide my (no longer needed) mandrel
assembly at no cost just pay the shipping charges.
Best regards,
Rob Housman
