Subject: | Drooping Outrigger |
Fellow Europaphiles,
First I wish to thank whomever it was that asked about my drooping
starboard outrigger. I intended to answer after I checked it out, but
I've misplaced the e-mail.
In any case, yesterday I had intended to take care of the last item on
my squawk list, the engine run up to check the output voltage and
confirm the ability to charge the battery. For some reason, I decided
to do a thorough pre-flight style inspection of the aircraft prior to
run up. When I came to the port side "Check Outrigger Down And
Locked," rather than just check from aft where I can see the latch and
confirm down-lock, I went around front to look as well. Not sure why,
probably the previously mentioned e-mail. What I found was
interesting and all has been documented on my build web site. The
pics weren't great as they are iPhone pics, but the point is obvious.
Had I left the speed kit fairings on, never would have seen this issue.
Since it was common to both outriggers, probably was due to assembly
error, failing to do a final tighten of a stiff-nut. Still I will
have to watch the outriggers more closely and from the front as well
as viewing the latch from the aft.
Y'all be careful out there and make those pre-flight walk-around
inspections count.
I'll be going up to KDTO this morning to complete that engine run up
test and if all seems well and the weather cooperates, I'll be seeing
how well The Little Dragon Lady and I do in another session of the
landing dance.
Check six,
Bob Borger

Cheers,
I may have made a tactical error - in running the grounding strap
from my 'forest-of-tabs' on the firewall to an M6x16 bolt holding the
plastic ignition cover on the back of the engine. Admittedly, the bolt
threads into the ignition housing but now I'm having nervous thoughts about
the cover.
Where did you ground your strap to the engine?
Thanks, ferg

hi Ferg
I used the large threaded holes on top of the engine just behind the Vacuum pump,
These are used to lift the engine at its point of balance, If you use a good quality
welding cable with swaged joints it would be a fit and forget item,,

Just about to set the throttle using Tlr46.exe software. Understand
that this gets done with TCU powered up but engine not running. If I
run the engine will the 'Montor' menu of the software give me a real
time rpm readout? - 'cos still trying to sort out non functioning tacho.

Those points are used for the attachment of part of the prop control
system with the Arplast prop and are hidden if the cooling shroud is
fitted.
I used a threaded lug next to the rocker cover on the rear righthand
(looking from the cockpit) cylinder.

Hi! Ferg
I used a substantial threaded boss on the lower port side of the crank
case just below and aft of the oil filter. (914 installation.)

Subject: | TCU / throttle software |
Hi! Paul
>From my memory the TCU set up procedure handles percentage power linked
to throttle position. I don't think the TCU deals with RPM.
This then leaves the pilot to ensure that RPM limitation is secured by
propeller setting.
Certainly my Rotax Tacho isn't linked to anything other than the engine.
However my Smart Avionics Propeller Controller gives a power and RPM
read out for the Woodcomp Wobbly Prop
I am however just little perplexed why no one else has replied since
I'm no authority on subject!

Ferg,
I know you have already looked at the Tony Bingalis "Firewall Forward
and or Knuckles AeroElectric Connection, but for others:
Please use standard aircraft wiring procedures to secure a suitably
sized wire from the engine block to the airframe to handle engine
starter grounding amperage requirements, instrument grounding and
accessories (I use a short #4 cable minimum). No matter what, make sure
the wire ring connector is solidly in contact with the block/head of the
engine.
In the past I used the M6 bolt that the bracket coming off the engine
block, which holds the ignition coil boxes, however on the new Rotax
engines make that area harder to get to.
My new two favorite places to make a ground contact are:
The engine lift points behind the gearbox or in the hole on the #4
engine cylinder near the head bolt.
They all worked fine.
I run my main battery ground to a 5/16 stud through the firewall, and
from this point to the block, and on the inside of the firewall I run a
#10 wire to the panel/airframe for a low power panel or a #8 for a high
power panel.

Ferg,
I put mine at the brace that supports the ignition module. The engine case
has a nice big flat machined area there
