Richard - OK, that's clear enough, and you can generate that 0-5
volts in a number of ways, typically by using a potentiometer
(variable resistor network).
>the probes are capacitance
>type from Pete at Airworld ie resistive type
But that's not very clear. Either they are capacitive or resistive.
Maybe their sensing mechaism is capacitive and the interface to the
display is resistive? You don't seem to say what this sensor is
intended to measure.
>Dynon have advised their
>resistance to voltage converter is not suitable
If the output of the sensors is capacitive then that would be a
sensible answer. Even if the sensor output is resistive, it might
also be correct if the range of resistance falls outside what the
Dynon converter is designed to handle. Do you have the spec of the
Dynon converter?
>I know some of you are worldly wise in the electrics side
I have done a bit of electronics, but I'd need a bit more information
before being able to offer advice.
The sensor in question, how is it specified? Assuming it's a
2-terminal device, I'm looking for the range of capacitance (or
resistance as the case may be) that it presents to the outside world
for the full range of input conditions. It does seem much more likely
that the output is resistive - a variable capacitance would require
rather more interface work - so the spec would be something like: X
ohms at minimum (pressure, temperature, level, whatever) to Y ohms at
maximum (pressure, temperature, level etc).
If it's a simple 2-terminal variable resistor, we can design a
potentiometer circuit to provide the Dynon with the 0 - 5 volts that
it wants to see, provided also that the Dynon input impedance is
known (or alternatively is so high that is can be neglected).
The approach above is from first principles, without knowing very
much about the devices involved. Maybe someone with direct experience
of the sensor and the display can offer more succint advice.
I've removed the rest of the text from this hijacked thread as it's
not relevant!

I take it that you are talking about fuel level sensors. The Dynon
website says:
Dynon Avionics does not supply fuel quantity senders. However, our
EMSes and FlightDEK-
D180 are compatible with any resistive "float" style fuel level
sender, or capacitance probes
that output a variable voltage between 0-5V DC.
and
Capacitance to Voltage Converter
These converters allow Vans RV builders with capacitive plates in
their fuel tanks to measure
fuel quantity with Dynons EMS products. One is required per tank; a
maximum of two are
supported. Each is equipped with a BNC connector, making connection to
the Vans plates a
snap.
Remember that Capacitance fuel sensors need calibrating for the fuel
type in use. A probe calibrated for Avgas will miss read with Mogas
and vice-versa.
Europa do a resistive probe that does work with the D180 (I have one).

Richard
Tony Krzyzewski has updated his fuel gauge and has provided me with a list
of electronic parts to connect it to Dynon.
However I don't think the actual circuit has been provided so far in his
diagrams; but obviously he knows how to do it and it may only be necessary
to ask him - as I will also h ave to do.

My version 5 sender and and associatedated display chip are capable of outputting
a 0-5v level that emulates a capacitance gauge.
Those with the v5 circuit diagram will find the dynon interface circuit on the
display chip page. As the extra circuitry consists of one resistor and one capacitor
it is a really easy add on.

Apologies for tagging onto this thread, but has anybody out there had any
experience with connecting capacitance probes to a dynon 180?
The Dynon requires a 0-5 volt varying input and the probes are capacitance
type from Pete at Airworld ie resistive type. Dynon have advised their
resistance to voltage converter is not suitable and Pete says dynon should
know?!
I know some of you are worldly wise in the electrics side and might have
encountered this one and I don't want additional analogue gauges.
Any advice would be appreciated

My apologies to all those who've been
encountering problems with processing of card
payments on the Europa Club website since about
26th April, when the new faster servers went
online.
I think all those affected are:
Bob Gowing
Bob Borger
Jan Elmn
Kent Svensson
Herbert Habersatter
Greg Fuchs
Kingsley Hurst
Arnold Hansen
Chris Staines
Peter Hodgson
yvind Aasgaard
I neglected to update some vital server addresses
at changeover time and that caused card
transactions to fail.
I have now corrected the necessary files and
checked that the transaction mechanism is
working, so it should be OK to try again.
I'm sorry I didn't spot this issue sooner and
take prior action to prevent all the trouble
people have experienced.
You may have noticed that the payment processing
firm is in process of changing its name from
Protx to Sage Pay - the appropriate parts of the
Europa Club website will be updated to match in
due course.
