Subject: | Mode S and others... |
Mike Parkin is right; an approach controller at Liverpool (who also controls
Doncaster approach from the same desk, and who is co-owner of an RV9A here
at Shobdon) told us in March this year, when he was briefing us on the new
ATSOCAS procedures, that only London, Manchester and Scottish Area controls
can interpret Mode S.
In the meanwhile (and thanks to all our friends in Holland who provided
information and encouragement) the 17 aircraft of the Flying Farmers
Association went into Netherlands airspace on 9 May, all to be told to put
their transponders (whether A, C, or S) on standby whilst under the Schipol
TMA. We were given a dispensation to carry PLB's rather than ELT's when
crossing into the NL FIR, but we also heard before we went that other
individual aircraft from UK had crossed into NL FIR without ELT and without
any problems.
After leaving Lelystad, most of us went on to Norway via Viborg in Denmark,
and I would like to recommend that grass airfield as being exceptionally
helpful and friendly. As I passed over the Borkum area on that leg, someone
called me (on the Bremen Info frequency) also a Europa, and I think
identifying himself as (what was) G-KITS. If you watch this forum, I am
sorry that I did not chat, but I did see you some 2000' below me, flying
east along the Friesian islands; my route took me overhead Heligoland.
Best wishes,
David

Hi! Craig
Yes I think so but it uses numerical conversions for the alphabet as per
the old telephone system.
I was not able to check it out due to the inadequate ATC receiver
facilities in this patch !

May be a stupid question re your garmin mode s
but you did put your unique mode S id code into the transponder when you
installed it???

Hi! all
I have previously had a position indictor failure on my LED bars.
I think I recall that it was the orange wire which does the
potentiometer information transfer? Mine is frozen in the fully up
indication irrespective of where the flaps are.
Can any one confirm?
I have flight tested my new Mode S Garmin 328 Transponder and it works
...except neither Waddington nor Humberside ATC have the aircraft
registration recognition to confirm that function is working OK !
It does have a radio interference problem in that there is an
interrogation blip to be heard in the radio head sets which wasn't there
on the Garmin 320 original set.
Has anyone any suggestions? (Except that I just wasted 1750 !)

PS A "bright spark" at Wickenby suggested I infringe at Conningsby where
the Typhoons are based to see if they pick up the registration
information !

Hi all,
I would like to hear your experience with the monowheel brake system. I purchased
my Europa XS monowheel from the builder about 1 year ago (N205CN has its 1st
flight on May 2006) and had all the issues that I could imagine with the brake
system till now.
After bleeding the master cylinder at least 5 times (leaks with air coming in),
I decided to completely replace the whole system beginning of this year: master,
slave and tube.
Europa first sent me a leaking master cylinder that was replaced for free.
So during the 20 hours that I flew after this replacement, I already got 2 times
the tube to come out from the slave cylinder connection. Today I got the tube
to come out of the master cylinder.
I became a master in flushing the whole system and reconnecting everything as well
as bleeding from the slave cylinder in less than 15 minutes. That's not the
issue.
But, this system is not acceptable from a safety point of view. Today, I got no
brake at the end of the runway (400m concrete). Good that I stopped the engine
and that there is 50 meters grass after the runway...
2 months ago, I was doing the mag check at 3000RPM when I lost the brake! I luckily
touched nothing but finished my course 2 meters from the hangar door.
Am I the only one who is facing such issues with the monowheel brake?
Potentially, do someone of you have a solution that enhance the safety of this
system?
Thanks for your input, Jacques.

Hi Jacques
I have a XS monowheel, but am not yet flying.
I however did work on plumbing my brake system.
I suspect that you may be using american sized brake tube instead of metric. It
is so very close in size to metric, but I was not able to make a good seal, I
inspected contact area (crushed seal) after tightening down and it was very marginal
at best. American tubing is smaller in diameter compared to supplied metric.
Another problem is that american pipe threads are oh so close to metric in diameter
and pitch, but again not the same, so you can't just screw in place american
fittings IMHO and use american diameter hose.
I was unable to find metric brake hose in the states, I ordered the longer piece
needed from Europa.

Bob,
I am not sure whether you have configured your 328.
Details for set-up are on page 5-16/17 of the installation manual.
Numbers for G-PTAG are:
Binary: 0100_00_000_100_00_0011010100
Hex: 4040D4
Octal: 20040324

Jaques,
I did away with the standard system and installed a calliper break master
cylinder on the stick. The calliper was made in France by MDO, it is very
powerful and brilliant to use. One finger is all that is needed on the
lever, it also has a built in parking break. The only shortcoming of the
system is that the brake is only available to the left-hand seat. Not a
problem for me, as apart from 2 notable exceptions (Ivan Shaw and Andy
Draper) no one flies my baby apart from me.

Mike

Hi Jacques,
Like Ken, I have had very little trouble with my mono brake. I noticed that
you said it took 15 minutes to bleed your system and I was wondering if you
had the brake bleeding kit that Europa sell. It is a funnel that fits into
the the hole in the master cylinder and I find that bleeding my brake system
with this to be very fast and easy.

Subject: | Transponder adjustment |
Hi all.
Has anyone had any experience of adjusting the received output from the
transponder?
I'm running a Garmin 320A transponder through an Ameri-King 350 encoder. It
works fine except that the receiving station is getting a readout 300 ft
low. (eg when I am at 5500ft, radar says I am at 5200ft)
There are a couple of adjustment screws on the encoder + & - . Has anybody
adjusted these and how sensitive are they?
Thanks, Gavin Lee ZK-EPA...55 hours and counting

Measure diameter, it sure does sound like
you have american size.
If you needI will measure mine,
butI think the metric was like 6 or 8 thosands larger in diameter
than the american size. A standard piece of paper is ~ .0025".
