At http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ethylene-glycol-d_146.html the boiling point of a 50% mixture of pure ethylene glycol and pure water is given as 107.2 deg C but this is at atmospheric pressure at sea level. Antifreeze also contains other stuff (such as corrosion inhibitors) that will further increase the boiling point, and at higher pressure the boiling point is elevated further. I haven't got the required reference materials at hand, nor do I recall the long ago learned equations used to make the adjustment for pressure, so let's just say that 120 deg C looks close to the boiling point. A detailed discussion of antifreeze at elevated temperatures can be found at http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem03/chem03987.htm Also, how accurately is the temperature and pressure known? While the temperature probably correct to within a few tenths of a degree I suspect that the pressure is likely to be less accurately known. We can exceed the 120C maximum on long taxis on hot days but do not seem to lose any coolant. So at what temperature does it actually boil? Goff Moore G-CHOX Visit - www.EuropaOwners.org

Goff, I've looked up your question on the boiling point of 50:50 glycol:water at about 1 barG. See: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cooling-system7.htm Looks like the 50:50 glycol:water boiling point at atmospheric pressure is 106 deg C At 1-1.2 BarG, the boiling point increases by about 25 deg C, i.e. its boiling point will be about 130 deg C. (Usual caveats about getting data from the internet, apply..!) Regards, Dave Moore Aberdeen, UK

In my setup, with 1.2 bar pressure cap and a 50/50 mixture, and two independant gauges (CHT & coolant), I can reach 130 degrees without spoiling coolant. At these temperatures however, I can hear after shutdown some "boiling noises", so the coolant reaches at some locations the boiling point (as can be expected), but doesn't spill yet. - Frans Veldman

Curiosity. Anyone have picture of your port rudder cable hole in sternpost of a standard XS with tailwheel? I needed to make a "Grad Canyon" sized slot that is closer to the tailwheel spring than I would have liked. Any comments welcome. FYI also check out: http://www.turbomagazine.com/features/0703_turp_cooling_system_additives/test_results.html for more information on coolant additives. Seems like they may work. I had the same "large" hole. Due to the hinge position and geometry of the whole arrangement I dont see another option except for the generous hole. craig -----Original Message----- From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com]On Behalf Of rparigoris Sent: Sunday, 31 May 2009 5:44 AM Subject: Europa-List: Port rudder cable hole in sternpost Curiosity.
