Hi All,
Yesterday I flew over to Halfpenny Green (ex Wolverhampton
International !!!) I'm glad to say that the airfield is back to being
nice and friendly again. Talking to the chaps in the tower they said
that they will soon be supplying Mogas. Now I was wondering are there
any other airfields in th UK that supply Mogas. It would be useful to
have a list of said airfields. I now there's talk of Avgas being phased
out and replaced by lead free fuel, but when, if ever!!!
Cheers Danny G-c.e.r.i

Bob,
We followed Erich's mod several years ago. The .078 cable does not fit in the
original housing. What you purchase from ACS will be a complete cable, solid
wire and housing. You will have to make adapters to connect the housing to the
Europa throttle housing and also to the carbs. We purchased those from Lockwood.
Others have just replaced the stranded wire with piano wire. We tried that (got
wire from McMaster) but were unable to straighten the wire so it would work
in the housing. It comes in a pretty small roll and the wire takes a set.
If you use the ACS cable, it works better if you lube it with graphite. Ours has
over 100 hours and works fine.

Subject: | Re: 914 Slight Hesitation going Full Throttle? |
I had similar on a T-67 I used to fly. It was due to the mixture going
momentarily rich as the throttle was opened - which rather matches the
effect Darin is talking about.
Worth looking into?

Jeremy

Bob,
The big hesitation was no doubt my Bell intercooler as I could remove it and
the problem would go away and then install it and the problem would come
right back. So it was definitely my intercooler. I know these work when
installed as designed but if you reread my post you will see that I modified
it to fit my installation which I think changed the air flow characteristics
through the intercooler just enough to be a problem. I think they are great
intercoolers and work well when installed as per design.

Subject: | Re: Turbo problems??? |
Rich,
I'm sure you've made sure your gas and filters are clean and fresh.
Look at the fuel pressure to check the regulator is correct.
I just took a 914 down to Lockwood. The engine would only come to 34
inches of MP but ran perfectly smooth. Trouble shot the sensors,
electrics and computer, all was fine. Dean had me check for the rubber
seals from the airbox to the carbs as that screws up the works. No air
leaks or cracks. On final inspection, it seems the carb diaphram and
piston were hanging up on one carb. I always believed that would result
in a rough running engine. Go figure. Kerry rebuilt both and all was
well. In the last 5 years I'm sure you put in the gasket kit in your
carbs. Please check them. The dual manometers work well in
troubleshooting the carbs, but this malfunction hardly showed up. Three
weeks of on and off shop time out of my life and 200 miles of trucking
this thing.
As for the Turbo. If the waste gate sticks closed you would see it in
low MP. If stuck open you will see an overboost (not good). If the
waste gate does not work smoothly, that can cause a surge in the engine
as you go to full turbo. Picture the servo pulling the cable to adjust
the targeted boost pressure commanded by the computer and throttle
position. In the process the computer command goes to the preset servo
movement and on a hot day, overshoots a little and it begins releasing
pressure, then the arm sticks, the servo tries to loosen the cable more
and then vibration loosens the arm causing a drop in pressure, the servo
corrects again and results in a surge. Then the servo really starts
hunting. Hitting the reset switch works to stabilize it if it is a
minor sticking problem above the 100% throttle position normally.
Surging at 60% indicates the tubo arm may be sticking as it starts out
commanding 100% (cable extended) then slowly reduces the servo position
to about 40% (1/4 throttle or so) then up to 88% at full turbo with the
engine off. look to see that the cable moves smoothly and the waste gate
is not hanging up.
Otherwise, I am out of ideas.

Time for some group input. I was bad and did not fly for about 6
weeks. I
went out to the airport with good intentions to rectify that problem
only to
find that above 60% power the engine would surge. I traced the problem
to a
stuck waste gate. I have since freed it up with a little mouse milk on
the
arm and the TCU servo and response to throttle seem to be good. The
problem
I am now having is at about 60% power the engine starts to surge and
trying
to go to full power just kills the engine. I "assume" it was turbo
related
and pulled the air filter to check the turbo. The blades seem to turn
fine.
A restart of the engine and all was good for about 2 days and then on
run up
the problem returned. I can't seem to shake the feeling that I still
have an
airflow problem but not sure how best to trouble shoot this one. Any
suggestions? I will be going back out tomorrow night to do a full
power run
up with the plane tied down. I have monitored and logged the engine
data but
it really just shows what you would expect with a surging engine.
Change in
RMP change in Airbox pressure.... The engine has 180 hours on it and
runs
great when it runs. Has anyone shot the inside of the turbo with a oil
to
break up any carbon build up? I am trying to get a camera scope to
have a
peek inside from the exhaust side.

Bob,
For reason I will not go into on this post I did not order the firewall
forward kit from Europa. As such, I can't speak as to what you received
in your kit from Europa. I ordered the solid .078 cable from ACS and m
ated it with either bicycle shift or brake cable housing of approprate s
ize. I hope this helps.
Regards,
Erich
Erich,
Found your original post in the archive. This is about what I had
planned on doing. Your post implies the 0.078" Bowden Cable Inner
Wire fits in the original cable housing. Is this correct? If so, it
certainly makes life easier than having to replace the complete
original cable set with a complete Bowden Cable/Housing (2nd option).
Thanks,
Bob Borger

Perfect timing to start this thread!
My wife and I are planning to tour around the UK and Scotland with G-BWON this
summer, for which I just started planning.
Our plan is to split the route into 4 legs, then spending a couple of days at each
final destination for the leg.
The route is not final, but roughly like this:
Day 1: EHHO (Hoogeveen) to EGTE (Exeter)
Day 2: EGTE to EGForsa (Glennforsa on Isle of Mull in Scotland)
Day 3: EGForsa to EGBK (Northhampton Sywell)
Day 4: EGBK to EHHO (back home)
Destinations and fuel stops are not yet firm, and open to any suggestion.
My questions are:
- do these fields have Mogas on pump?
- any fields about halfway these legs carrying Mogas?
- any suggestions for scenery routes?
- also important due to lack of other means of transportation: good and cheap accomodations
on these airfields/airfields roughly in the same areas?
All advise and any suggestion is highly welcome and appreciated!
Marcel
