Subject: | Lifting a Europa |
Perhaps someone can help out there.
I am far from home base and my normal Europa jack, and need to lift my
Europa classic monowheel to test undercarriage retraction. I once read
(on the Europa website I think) that it is perfectly OK to lift a Europa
off the ground by getting a hydraulic engine hoist, and hoisting the
whole thing up with straps to the the engine/undercarriage frame just
behind the engine (Rotax 912). In fact I once had to do this after a
gear up, and it all appeared to work fine, no creaking and groaning in
the frame.
But is this really OK? Is there a quick alternative to hoisting up to
check the retract?
Best to all

Dear Richard
I have did so many times and cannot see any risks or problems.
Please use at least three straps each capable your plane=B4s weight.
Think about tail wheel also: when lifting fore - mass goes back, so lift
it also
(= put something under it).
Do not trust your engine hoist! That means do not leave your pride and
have a drink while gear retracted - it will loose it=B4s pressure sooner
or later.
Look at the attached pic about 2=BD years ago - my Europa was not
flyable yet.
Those foams under the wings were only to balance the plane - not for
load at all.
And I was there in (first time) retracting and tracting, retracting
and...
I hope this helps and wishes to Africa, this message came from Finland.

Subject: | Europa Short Strip Capability |
All
Europa Aircraft has claimed since 1993 their planes have "a good short
strip capability".
I confirm: Today - few hours ago - I landed to the EFTO
https://ais.fi/ais/vfr/aerodromes/EFTO.html
That is a 360 metres (from ditch to ditch) grass strip (27-09) 50 km
west from Helsinki Finland.
That is permitted only for ultra lights but please do not tell FCAA I
was there.
Landing: contact to the earth about 1/4 from the fence, stop 1/4 before
the end of the strip.
That means less than 200 metres (only moderate brakes and some of you
know I prefer real fast in final).
Take off: we used less than 2/3 of the runway - that means less than 240
metres.
Weather: total calm, temperature +20C, almost sea level, QNH 2018 mbar.
Plane: near MTOW and that means in RT=B4s case about 645 kgs (1419
lbs), engine 912S,
CS-prop (Airmaster with Warp Plades and 5700 engine revs).
Strip: grass 10 cm (=4 inches), quite wet (because it was almost
night), base strenght moderate, 27 right side (because they claimed that
side is harder!).
"a good short strip capability".
- that=B4s true in my mind!
Short and safe landings,
Raimo from Finland

Richard
Should be quite OK but it might be as well to put something loosely under
each wing spar to keep it balanced

Raimo,
I have done very similar landing on a deer strip at Woodbury NZ which
had 300 meters available and
an electric fence down one side!! We stopped in about 250 meters. It had
a high deer fence at the threshold as well.
Speed back to 50kts over the fence, put it on and little braking.
Take off was no problem with a constant speed propeller. If fact ,at the
same weight, like the Boeing 767, you can always take off
from a strip you have landed on.
Certainly a good STOL performance with the Europa.
Cheers,
Tim
