Hello David,
Thank you for the extra food for thought. As I say, I'm only an observer in
all this but I enjoy trying to understand what is going on and some accurate
figures are interesting to compare.
As a further point of interest, do you have the MP settings and RPM for each
of the figures quoted?
Cheers
Kingsley

Hello, Frans,
Thank you for your detailed reply re Mode S and ELT in your country.
Thank you also for the wonderful picture commentary that your wife Ilona
has put onto the privatepilots.nl website - absolutely brilliant!
Best of luck with the test flying, when you get that under way; where
will you keep your aircraft?

By way of comparison for a normally aspirated engine (912S), in a full power
climb from 2000' to 6650' (at OAT +5C @ 2000' and QNH 1005), fuel flow
dropped from 4.0 to 3.7 imp.GPH.
I've not worked out the percentage power loss due to air density, but would
guess that this was more than the % drop in fuel flow. Engine speed was a
constant 4800rpm throughout. No EGT data available, which would have shown
any richening of the mixture with altitude (as I recall, EGT does usually
get less with altitude on this engine, but not greatly).

I will keep it at home, taking full use of the trailering ability of the
Europa, if that is what you wanted to know.
If you mean what my "home" airfield will be, well, it depends, again due
to the trailering ability of the Europa. There are two airports nearby:
EHHO, a friendly grass strip, but it has a tendency to turn into a swamp
during the wet season, and it has very restrictive opening times
10:00-19:00. (yep, another thing we have is that any airfield needs to
have a manned tower, even if it is a grass strip, and if it is "closed",
using it is a serious violation.) Then we have EHGG nearby, a paved
class-C airport. Apart from the obvious advantanges, it is quite
expensive. A landing is the equivalent of enough fuel for at least one
hour flying.
So, our policy will be that when we are getting out to fly, with the
Europa on its trailer behind the car, we will choose between these two
airports, depending on conditions and intentions. Most of the time this
will be EHHO.
Thanks,
Frans

Extending the chat about EGT and fuel consumption this is an
interesting podcast from one of my heros Klaus Savier. Klaus achieved
48 US mpg at 207 mph recently in the Cafe competition. This should be
achievable with a Europa Motorglider and a Rotax. Except perhaps that
speed is measured block to block.
Klaus has a Vari Eze with an O-200. I have one of his ignition units on
my Long EZ. (yet to fly again)

I am embarrassed to admit this but I have not yet mastered
acquiring pictures via the list (nor I guess sending same). As a respect for
list patience, could someone contract to send me the method directly?
Thanks, I guess that means warning others you've done it to discourage
repeaters.

PS: don't use Reply. I'm on a new computer and somehow the return address
has a "0" in it instead of a "O", so you get a refusal. (That's also why I
send in capitals to avoid a "31" instead of a "3L" Some fonts don't
differentiate.
