    Subject: Contributions Down By 21%...
Dear Listers, As of today, contributions to the Matronics List Fund Raiser are lagging behind last year at this time by 21%. I have a fund raiser each year simply to cover my operating costs for the Lists. I *do not* accept any advertising income to support the Lists and rely solely on the contributions of members to keep the expenses paid. I run all of my own servers and they are housed here locally, and the Internet connection is a commercial-grade, T1 connection with public address space. I also maintain a full backup system that does nightly backups of all List-related data so that in the event of a server crash or worse, all of the Lists and the many years of List archive data could be restored onto a new server in a matter of hours. All of this costs a fair amount of money, not to mention a significant amount of my personal time as well. I have a Fund Raiser each year to cover these costs and I ask that members that feel they receive a benefit from my investments, make a modest contribution each year to support the continued operation and upgrade of these services. If you enjoy the Lists, please make a contribution today. I also offer some incentive gifts for larger contribution levels. At the Contribution Web Wite, you can use a credit card, Paypal, or personal check to show your support for the continuation of these services: http://www.matronics.com/contribution Thank you for your support! Congratulations Ilona and Frans! What a wonderful life experience to build a plane together and doing it in the farmers house surrounded by rich nature and horses. I noticed you have changed the harness upper attachment point AND the harness type for quick release. That is a good investment for safety. It consists of two parts, both sold by Aircraft Spruce: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/harness3b.php http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/seatbelt1a.php Apart from that it eliminates the risk of spinal compression, it is also a "quick release" type, where all four parts disconnect if you want to get out. We tested the original harness, but we found that if we would ever end up inverted, or would have to ditch, it would be possible to get entangled in it. The new harness has no loops or anything that can trap you when you are in a disoriented situation and are in a hurry to get out. About the connection point: the door flange is already quite strong by itself, and its shape makes it convenient to attach the harness. We reinforced the area with a anluminium angle bracket, folding around the flange so it "grips" from behind the flange. We further reinforced the area with a few layers of bid. Of course if the situation is violent enough something will break, but this applies to the other (original) attachment points as well. If anyone is interested in a set of original Europa harnesses, never used except for test fitting, let me know. Frans

Also, the task to get you out from the wreck is much easier for rescuer if unlooped belts... You are only one (w me) I know who has reacted because of this potential risk. Raimo OH-XRT "If anyone is interested in a set of original Europa harnesses, never used except for test fitting, let me know." - I have an extra free set also but do not recommend for anyone...

There are more potential risks that could easily be avoided. What about routing fuel lines through the cabin, so that if there is a leak the foot bath in front of the seat fills with fuel. Or using a fuel return line without a one-way valve, so when the line breaks all the fuel will drain into the fuselage, regardless of the setting of the fuel selector. I'm also sceptical about the recommendation to connect the trim directly to the battery instead of after the master switch. Oh yeah, go ahead and also connect the stall warner before the master switch, as the manual suggests. There are probably some more things worth keeping when the master switch is off. And then, when you need to make an emergency crash landing, you are sitting in an airplane with fuel behind your back, and a lot of live wires running over the entire length of the aircraft which you can't switch off... Maybe we can assemble a list with safety improvements so everyone can benefit from it. There are probably some things I have overlooked as well. I must assume there are more people on this list who are concerned about safety. Frans
