Hi Franz,
Yes, I know the hinges are weak from the personal experience of
having my open port door blow off the aircraft in a gust of wind
over 40 kts while on the ground, refueling at Norfolk (after business
hours of course) returning home from Sun n Fun 2006.
That is weakness in the open/close axis of the hinge, the structure
relies on the fore/aft axis to add parallel stiffening and tension
path to the roof.

Hi! I was to understand when Europa took some aerial photos of G-PTAG over
Stauning I had to fly no more than 110kts since they had their door off.
At least the passenger side did!
The only "convertible" that I knew off was the fact that G-PTAG was built to
be easily converted to a monowheel should I ever decide. I actually have
photos of three MAIN WHEELS fitted simultaneously!

Bob Harrison.

I think I have read somewhere that the Europa was intended to be
"convertible", i.e. that it should be possible to fly it without doors.
Ok, nobody seems to like it, but the design is there. Apart from that, I
highy doubt that the door could serve as a structural member given the
fact that the hinges are very weak.

Weldone Fred, you culprit!
As I wrote earlier - this is a solution I like!
And it really is madeable to the completed plane without too much pain
to spoil everything.
If I asked "would you Fred make an another set of those headrest
expanders for me" would you?
If so, I am your customer and #1 in this queue, please.
With that money you can buy real safe safety belts...throw those Europa
loop belts to the bin.
Spinal in one piece undoubtedly but still as a looped prisoner ;)

Make modified upper fixing points - Agreed
I am not sure you need the "lengthened and foldable headrest".
That is an alternative if the original upper fixing point is still
going to be there. That mod is possible do afterwards. It is on my list.
With lenghtened headrest the safety belts do not compress your spinal -
they are coming from up. It is better to be also foldable - so it does
not restrict reaching back seat. I do not remember whos idea this was
but "he" has good pics of it.
Raimo...I think I'm the culprit...it does everything you say, and I
tested mine to 15 G's, assuming 100 # upper body weight.
The stress loads all go back to the original hardpoint at the back of
the stock seat back/headrest. Pixs below are self explanatory.

Subject: | Re: Cowling with no access doors |
Fred,
I assume you mean the inlet which is center of the upper cowling?
That is a standard Europa engine air inlet.
You have not Europa engine kit because your choice is Subaru?
They supply Naca splash mounts with it but obviously they sell them separately.
"but I'm scratching my head on how
to construct air box / inlet interface w/ the upper cowl being
removable."
Find "Europa XS Rotax 912S Engine Manual, issue 2" and look at chapter 8 pages
1-5.
I think you will get a good idea when reading that manual. It is just sealed by
rubber lips.
I have always thought that seal is not necessary to be tight.
Hope this helps,

Very cute...and I'm making my cowls from Alex's molds to house my
mighty Subaru which I should have in about 10 days.
I notice your NACA inlet...I've been thinking of doing the same thing
to provide combustion air...the air filter will be just about dead
center below where your inlet is...but I'm scratching my head on how
to construct air box / inlet interface w/ the upper cowl being
removable.
For what purpose is your NACA inlet?

Trouble with any fixed in line filter is you cannot check it without
disturbing the fuel lines so the rubber hose gets eroded every time it
is removed.
It is also possible to block a filter in one event by pouring dirty fuel
into the tank. (especially if the Purolator is installed back to front :-( )
I think the only acceptable filter is an Andair gascolator. Easy to
check every time by draining a little fuel from the bowl. Won't allow
water through either.
I know we never have trouble with our cars but they either have a very
large filter (with a water drain) and they very rarely get filled up out
in the field miles from anywhere using someone else's scruffy old Jerry can."
***
That is true but if you go Andair (which is a masterpiece itself)
- it takes more time to build
- it is more complex
- heavier
- ugly to instal to the completed plane
If you have two inline filters which are parallel (Europa system) and one is blocked
the other one is still usable. That is sophisticated! During early days my
main tank filter was blocked (I thought my tank was perfectly cleaned after
building but it was not - there was not Bob H`s dog`s hair but sanding shit) during
flight. It was nice to switch reserve filter and go on flying.
What happens if your one and only Andair get somehow blocked?
Better to filter and take possible water out BEFORE refueling.
If you have to use "someone else's scruffy old Jerry can" just use MacFunnel.
Maybe there are other brand names also.
I use ALWAYS MacFunnel filter which isolates contaminants and water very effective.
Water which could condensate to the tank comes out by fuel drains (never seen water
in that sample).
I am producing a pressure refueling system and there is a very powerful gascolator
(Rakor Parker S3327 Marine Gasoline Fuel Filter /Water Separator made in USA,
capasitet about 400 litres /hour eg Europas empty tank will be refilled in less
than10 minutes)
When it is ready I am going to introduce it.

Subject: | EFIS inquiry re Stratomaster |
To Mainly Aussie Europa Builders
Can anyone give some advice regarding the Stratomaster Glass Cockpit EFIS I
nstrument/ Auto Pilot please=3F
I have been looking at the mid-sized Voyager which looks as if it would fit
in the Monowheel Inst Panel by cribbing about 1/2=22 into the top panel edge
and do all that the Dynon does in a different way.
I am not an experienced power pilot and don't know enough to make a sensibl
e decision; hence your comments would be appreciated.

Are there any of you with experience of the subject EFIS/Auto Pilot which
seems to do in a different way, all that done by the Dynon?
I have been looking at the mid-sized "Voyager" which looks as if it should
fit in the Europa Mono Panel by intruding about 1/2" into the surrounding
panel edge in its top port corner.
Advice invited please.
