I use regularly reserve side (to know it is usable).
The reserve side filter is always as clean as it was when new.
Believe me, my tank is clean and it will be so.

Raimo Remember that the reserve side will be the most likley to
recieve any contaminant since that is where the filler is, so.........
should there ever be a major contaninant event when you switch to
reserve it just may not be quite so ready to provide fuel.

I assume you always filter fuel as it enters the tank? This is the only
way to be sure. I do not believe visual check of Purolator sis good
enough . Some debris is invisible when wet with fuel, bits of polythene
tank swarf for example.
