As far as I have been able to ascertain, Mode S will not be required in neither Germany nor France if I stay out of controlled airspace and under 5000 ft MSL. That should not be a problem, there are many airfields I can use outside of C and D airspace. Certainly, I will be permitted to make a precautionary or emergency landing at a controlled airport, but: - will I be permitted to take off again, after the technical problem has been resolved or the weather has cleared (I assume that deteriorating weather may qualify for requesting precautionary landing permission) and fly out of the controlled zone, without having a Mode S transponder?? Does anyone know, or know where I can get a reply to this question? Some folk have made up their own panels but I stuck to the original as most people have done, and have found it has space for all the kit that I wanted - which is pretty comprehensive. It can be a fiddly job removing and refitting the thing unless you make some changes. I have mounted the standard "six-pack" of instruments on a removable panel and, once this is out of the way I can access all of the various connections thro' the gap. This means I can remove the entire panel in about 30 - 35 minutes. Replacing it takes a few minutes longer. The factory offer alloy plates to mount the clocks and things on - so it's not a big job to convert the standard set-up. Good luck with the build - it's well worth the time and effort, believe me! To my understanding it is enforced only for IFR flights. Most small aircraft are still equipped with mode C, and there is no problem at the moment to get clearance into C/D airspaces, nor with flight information services. The following link show the status in Europe: http://www.eurocontrol.int/msa/public/standard_page/General_aviation_VFR.html Have a nice trip ! Another great source is from Orbifly, and it is very handy (displays a synthetic view of the weather situation). They have an Iphone compatible version, and to my knowledge the access is free. http://www.orbifly.com/iphone/metmap.php? Happy Touring!
