Are you referring to the mechanism to lock the doors with a key?
If so, would you rather have the thieves just walk away with your fancy
headset, or do you want them to pry the door open with a screwdriver or
smash a window first? We are talking about thieves, if they want
something, they don't care about damaging your Europa.
I have deliberately no locks on my Europa. If thieves want something, I
rather want them taking it without damaging anything.

Franz,
I put my lock in because of airshows and non-home airport stays.
At Sun n Fun, there can be 50,000 non-pilots wandering the flightline with little
supervision.
Some thefts of opportunity can clearly be prevented.
Of course, locks don't prevent the damage done by kids running amongst the aircraft
or by smoking either.

Subject: | iPad progress report |
I recently obtained an ipad with embedded GPS and
compass to test its suitability as an in-flight Nav
supplement.
The good news:
The software is very good and rapidly evolving to
a state where it will surpass the usability and content
of Garmin handhelds. The data update prices are a
tiny fraction of Garmin/Jepp data.
The three software packages I tested are
SkyCharts, Air Navigation Pro, and Foreflight Mobile.
They are all inexpensive and their features overlap
considerably. None are perfect, but they are quite
usable now and the companies have described exciting
evolutionary plans.
The strongest points in these packages revolves around
situational awareness. On an iPad, the charts and plates
are very readable in size, and the 3G (cell phone digital)
data connections allow current weather data overlays
Battery life is 8+ hours in use. No Apple approved 12
charger is currently available.
I specifically did not include Hilton WingX because
it was at least 4x the price of the other packages
and did not have any additional features. WingX
received a fair bit of press, no doubt because of a
large advertising budget in our captive GA press.
I also did not include AeroCharts(CONUS) because
of the relatively high price.
The down side:
The iPad is too big to mount on a Europa panel. See image.
It works as a knee pad, but then the ambient sunlight
overwhelms the screen.
The iPad GPS chip is not a full featured Aviation
system. Only seems to have a 1 Hz update unlike Garmin
systems that can do 10 Hz (most important for their pseudo
instrument panel display)
3G data appears from test flight in the NYC Metro area
to be more available than voice cell service in air, but is
altitude and location sensitive. Clearly not as reliable inflight
as Satellite downlink, but 3G is much cheaper when you can
get it.
The iPad is heat sensitive. 5 minutes under my windshield on
a cloudy near-summer day put a big red X on the screen. I guess
the temp was about 130F or so.
So far none of the software packages offer georeferenced IFR
procedure plates as are available in some PDA products. Maybe
this will change by Oshkosh, But then the PDA products cant do
the NYT Crosswords at the same time :-)

Troy & Fred,
I understand your concern. I too would be worried about vacancy
problems. I guess we need to call to see whats available. I think
having the other chapter there could also be a positive because like
last year they put on a nice presentation from lohley aircraft
coatings so I heard. Having a larger group can attract something like
that. The best one we've had was the first year when all we did was
fly and drink beer & wine? Not at the same time by the way;o)
I will call on the dates to see what the situation looks like and
report back ASAP. Also since I missed last year due to weather it
would be nice to hear from those that we're there. How many planes and
people showed up from the Lousiville chapter and how did they respond
to our fly-in being the same week. I think I would rather be there
with other pilots & builders of planes than be there with a bunch of
boaters or golfers. Please no flaming from the boaters & golfers as I
enjoy both.

Fred,
Here is how I do it. As I'm sure you know, it is a deterrent system.
You can't stop a determined thief, but it deters the less considerate
person from opening up your cockpit uninvited. You won't believe what
people do at air shows.. I actually prefer a cockpit cover, but that
has drawbacks to.

THAT'S IT...exactly!
Nice design...simple, direct, robust...and I love the idea of
"keys"...which give me the option of engaging the "lock" if, and only
if, I choose to do so.
Thank you very much Ian,

Thanks Bud...nice solution!
You're no doubt correct about a determined thief...but my concern is
more about determined lovers...the way I see it, my Ms. Europa will be
sooooo sexy, that she will attract and inspire the passionate who will
endeavor to experience "oneness" within her cockpit.
On the other hand, come August, anyone who doesn't lock their car in
my village runs the risk of returning to their vehicle and finding it
stuffed with zucchini...August is also when our Orcas Island fly-in is
held, so I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Bud...nice refinement w/ the "double D" hole and the inside knob
(presumably) to ensure that rear door latch is engaged...question: Can
the pilot reach both knobs?...I'm going to run out to the shop and
make sure I can reach them while sitting in Ms. Europa.

Subject: | Rotax 914 running without electric fuel pumps |
Fellow Europaphiles,
I ran my Rotax 914 today for the first time without using the electric fuel pumps.
It ran solely one the Billet mechanical pump. Just a test run, at idle,
allowed to warm up to operating temps and did a short (2 meter) taxi to test the
new brake system. First baby steps in making ready for a return to flying.
The engine started immediately and ran smoothly once I had the "Choke" set. It
quickly warmed up and as it warmed the "Choke" was reduced to keep the idle below
2200 RPM. Once warmed up, a brief burst of power to get it rolling and back
to idle for a short taxi. The new brake worked well. I still have a small
leak at the banjo to brake cylinder connection. I need to work on it tomorrow
morning to see if I can get it stopped.
I have posted a 1minute video from the test run on my personal web site: http://gallery.me.com/rlborger
If I can get a copy of the video exported in QuickTime, I'll post it on my usual
build web site in the Billet Pump album along with the rest of the associated
pictures.
Dan at Billet Pumps is sending me an updated pump and pressure regulator. They
are supposed to arrive tomorrow some time. I will replace the existing pump
and regulator with the new set as soon as possible and begin further testing with
hopes to fly again some time this weekend.

Subject: | The Europa(e) Hall in TheEFTP Finland |
Europa Community - All of You !
I wanna share this moment instantly with all of you around the globe.
I am writing this time 0330 AM - I came just from The EFTP.
Last time when I have been airborne and a pilot was 13th of November
2009.
That was because OH-XRT (and many other poor planes here) lost her
hangar space in The EFTP.
That was a serious business!
I decided to make my own hangar and I call it The Europa[e] Hall !
That is why I have been really busy during last weeks!
It was completed tonight! Look at the attached photo! If you check it
carefully, you will notice Europa=B4s official logo is slightly modified
in this case!
Inside - there is a little bar, grill, service shop, alarm, safety cams
via internet recording ability, some aviation gizmos, nose artist girls
and other necessary equipments.
It=B4s size is just compact 9 x 12 m2.
My wife certainly planted some rose bushes beside it!
Because it is on a little hill, it is equipped also with an electric tow
machine to pull RT inside (she is so fat lady that even for me it is
almost too hard task to pull her inside manually).
I trailered today OH-XRT from her home hangar from Lempaala to The EFTP
and had also my first aviation session today.
I was thrilled - I have been grounded over seven months. Could I fly any
more (that wild tail wheeled mono)?
Rotax fired upp immediately.
Everything was ok.
I taxied about 15 minutes and it felt so good!
After I did some touch and goes and it felt also good or even better if
possible.
I did some of my best landings - Europa is really landable from the
first touch to the final stop using less than 300 metres runway.
After that I had a local flight 50 minutes.
That seven months meant nothing - I felt as I had been airborne
yesterday.
Obviously flying Europa has gone to my backbone and more or less to my
ass too!
I feel COMPLETELY happy now!
You there around the globe and still building: build it fast - just do
it and complete it ! What sooner that better - it is really worth of it!

Subject: | Relay to act as kill switch |
Gidday,
I am electron averse. They take on personalities whenever I interact, and most
often I think they are female. Suffice to say, they do what they want to, and
change their minds! So, I'd like to kill them off from my aft mounted battery.
I am planning a kill switch in the passenger headrest area, but was wondering
running a single Rotax alternator if anyone has advice on whether I could run
a "relay" that would isolate the large battery voltage with a small charge via
a panel mounted switch? Rather than a big kill switch like the great one Bob
Borger is using from Flaming River
http://www.flamingriver.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=64/category_id=133/home_id=231/mode=prod/prd64.htm
is there another way of achieving this same goal? I suppose in the case of a crash
it would mean that you would have voltage still coming forward of the relay
to the switch, on the panel, but it would be small and could be choked to be
of low amperage? couldn't it? That way a short would kill a fuse and not create
a large spark as a source of ignition. Would it be possible then to wire the
relay such that when it was isolated, it would also turn off the power forward
of it to operate the relay too, so that there would be "NO" power coming forward?
I suppose then the switch would become useless at turning power back on,
so maybe a relay could be used in another way?
Is there any point in being able to isolate....kill off alternator voltage ?? I'm
not sure if the Rotax alternator has an inbuilt function or whether its voltage
must be monitored by such a device if included, prior to the battery. Is
this the right idea for setting up the alternator circuit?
Reg
Tony Renshaw
P.S. I apologise if this is covered in the manual, however I am away from the book
for a few days with work, and am crunching away these ideas remotely.
