      Gidday,
      I have a small Andair, that I probably am NOT going to use, and am looking for
      alternatives. Ideally I'd like a clear bowl solution so that I wouldn't have to
      open it up unless a visual inspection through the sides indicated a problem.
      The small glass (?) filters supplied by Europa may well satisfy that, but I know
      the fuel filtering capability is near to nought. I have an Ezy-Flow 90 micron
      aluminium circular cartridge filter that I think I'll probably use on my Reserve
      side, and ironically I might use a smaller filter or gascolator on my Main
      side. So, I am interested if there is a gascolator other than Andair that
      someone has used, and is happy with in operational use?

      I am using the Sytec Pro filters as supplied by Europa.  Do you have the
      data that led you to the above conclusion.

      If you really want a see through gascolator, see if there is a wrecker in
      Sydney with a gascolator from a C172.
      They have a glass bowl and a drain tap on the bottom.  . . .  well at least
      my "F" model did !

      I have a 914 installation.  I used the original plumbing layout circa 2000.
      The standard fuel selector feeds the 2 fuel pumps mounted in parallel and
      each pump has its own PRO filter.  I know that later than 2000 there was
      much discussion about the necessity for check valves and I understand that
      the latest build instructions reflect that change.  The latest drawing I
      have seen puts the fuel pumps in series with a parallel check valve
      arrangement designed to bypass a blocked pump I guess.  There was also a lot
      of discussion about the fuel pressure to the engine.
      
      In practice I have found that the original parallel pump arrangement works
      well.  Testing the fuel flow to the engine I found that No 1 pump provided
      89 L/Hr and No 2 pump 94 L/hr,  both pumps together gave about 200 L/Hr.  I
      always filter the fuel when refuelling with the standard water/separator
      funnel.  Until recently, I never had any  problems - changing the filters as
      part of the maintenance routine rather than a necessity.
      I also have a fuel pressure switch which feeds both a warning light and my
      voice warning system.
      
      After an extended layup, I emptied the tank and recalibrated the fuel
      contents system.  I also checked the carb bowls for any gunge - there was a
      little gummy residue that came out easily with carb cleaner.  A filter check
      showed no problems.
      
      On returning home from the Popham fly-in, I had several voice warning alerts
      of 'Fuel Pressure Low' - nothing was seen on the Fuel Low Pressure light.
      While working through the system fault diagnosis, I noticed a very short
      flicker of the fuel pressure light with an attendant voice warning.  Having
      changed tanks and tried the different fuel pump combinations (it was
      necessary to trip the CB to isolate the No 1 pump) I concluded that the
      problem was either a No 1 filter clogging or the No 1 pump on its way out.
      Normal SOP, both pumps on below 1000 ft agl, a normal landing followed.
      
      Inspection on the ground showed that No 1 fuel pump PRO filter was indeed
      starting to clog.  Filter changed no further problems.
      
      I was very pleased with the Voice Warning system it provided an early
      indication of an impending problem that could be worked well before the
      world went silent.
      
      The twin PRO filter configuration does seem to work quite well and it offers
      an alternative path for the fuel if one of the filters clogs - as I
      understand it, some Andair installations result in a possible single point
      of failure.  I guess 2 Andair filters is the perfect (but costly) solution.
      
      In summary,  the PRO 805 filters are probably not the perfect solution, but
      they do work.  There are many Europas out there with lots of hours happily
      using the in line filters without problem.
      
      All the above is just my opinion and probably not worth a lot.  (tin hat
      on).

      Well historically, Europa only used the small glass sided filters. They were
      collectively scorned by the builders then, but I am using old information,
      greater than 5 years. The filters I got from Europa recently look similar,
      but the main problem is the element size. That is the reason people went the
      gascolator path with Andair initially, eons ago. But, and I say BUT, if you
      are happy with them, well for me that is great news! I actually think I may
      use them after all, as I want something I can see through, and there doesn't
      seem to be a lot of options out there. What setup do you have?
