Subject: | Re: My Apollo/Garmin SL70 transponder needs repair |
I once had a test fail indication on my SL-70 which has otherwise been
a stellar performer.
It was indeed a loose antenna connector
Any substantial avionics shop should have a premade jig to plug an
SL-70 into to confirm normal function. That test should be cheap.
Repair is essentially a Garmin only function.

Many thanks=2C Peter. That gives me hope=2C only the complete removal of my
panel is a real pain. I will try to find another SL70 user around here fir
st where I can slide in my unit just to confirm whether it is faulty or the
wiring. You must have been cursing having to pay that amount=2C plus the s
hipping of course.

Karl=2C I also have a SL
40 Apollo/Garmin com. radio and SL 70 Transponder in my Europa=2C and when
a
problem with my intercom occurred I smartly dropped it off at Garmin in Sal
em=2C
OR=2C to be checked out=2C since we were driving south on I-5 past the fact
ory
anyway and returning the same way later. There was nothing wrong with the r
adio
as it turned out=2C but I was charged $ 450.00 anyway. I removed the
instrument panel and found a loose wire at the multi-plug at the back of
the radio. Unfortunately=2C after re-installing everything=2C the SL70 show
ed
TEST FAIL. Out came the instrument module again and the antenna was detache
d
from the SL 70. The little snap ring holding the antenna to the tray had
departed. I would look at the wiring behind the radio stack for the
problem=2C as I believe that the transponder is not at fault. Also=2C check
all the
antenna connections as well. I hope=2C that this will lead
somewhere. Good luck=2C Peter
This is the second time in 3 years that
my transponder is failing. Does anyone know a reliable repair shop=2C anywh
ere in
N. America or Europe where I might pay a lot less than the usual $ 450 quot
ed me
by Apollo ? Or is a used one available anywhere=2C where it was replaced by
a Mode
S ?
My unit comes up with TEST FAIL=2C and it seems to refer to the transmit an
d
receive. It happened a couple of times in flight=2C but then came back to n
ormal.
Now it is permanent.
Any ideas out there ? Would appreciate any hints.

I hope that is all it is. I certainly have to be sure before I start lookin
g at repair or purchase. Perhaps I can make up my own plug. Ignoring the al
titude info=2C all it really needs is power and the antenna=2C and for the
antenna I have a connector in the tunnel. Under google I did find a repair
shop in Florida ( transponderrepair.com) =2C and they charge a lot less tha
n Garmin. Thanks for your input

Hello,
Are any other UK based Europas thinking of flying to Texel this year? I plan to

Any other takers?

Subject: | Dawn to Dusk Challenge |
For all those who have been kind enough to show an interest, I am
delighted to say that my son Patrick and I completed our Half Million
Islands challenge last Sunday. We started at Lee on Solent at 5.10am and
touched down in Lerwick at 8.15 pm, after 1703 nm flying at an average of
130.2kts. We photographed all 119 islands named on the 1/2 mill charts and
stopped 3 times for fuel in Caernarfon, Oban and Stornoway, ( and had a Long
Ranger tank). The weather was kind to us except for a low cloud base over
the Pennines making the excursion to Farne & Holy Islands a bit trying, and
also a low just west of St Kilda making its presence felt with heavy rain,
highish wind and 700 ft cloudbase. The plane performed immaculately.
Patrick has put a short video on line at:

Hi! Goff.
Thanks for the "heads up" I was thinking I had already registered but on
checking find not, so I have now.
All very much presuming I can get respite time off and must be back on time
to start a journey to Ayr for Ivor's Daughters' wedding on 21st!(regretfully
overland !)
Last year I flew direct over the North Sea and found it a "breeze" but I'd
want the weather to oblige for a similar trip this time.

Tony,
I sent a couple of emails your way but no reply so wonder if I have
your address OK? A third is now enroute which may negate the previous two.
In any case, kindly confirm receipt, as my messages won't round Centaurus
for some time yet.
cheers, Ferg

Subject: | Cold start problems |
In addition to my other problems my engine now won't start with the choke o
nly. I have to make repeated attempts=2C until eventually I get it going wi
th no choke and a little throttle. My throttle minimum idle position is at a
round 1300rpm. I assume it has something to do with the carbs=2C but they w
ere serviced by a Rotax agent not very long ago. Has anyone got any ideas w
here I should look ? I am able to start on one magneto for a softer start.
This is not my year=2C but at least the glider wings have been up a few tim
es.
