Hi,
I've been wondering about the electric flap mod for a taildragger. Ignore the
'taildragger' bit in this case as it's actually the standard system fitted to
the tri-gear.
I like the simplicity (and have all the parts) to modify the mechanical mono flap
system and then just have 2 indents on the flap arm guide (half flap and full
flap). This to me is a cheap, lightweight and fail safe system. The electric
flap mod is interesting though.
My question is: Do you operate the rocker switch for flaps up or down and then
look at the markings on the flap and then stop operating the flap switch when
the flap is 'about in the right position'. Or, is the system 'Cessna style'
where you hit the switch and wait while the flap moves to half flap and then hit
the switch again if you want full flap?
If the system is of the former description above then I kind of think that the
electric flap is just another distraction in the circuit if you are operating
the swicth and looking out to see when it's reached the correct angle versus just
moving the mono handle to the correct indent.
Have I understood the electric flap system correctly or is it more slick than I
think?
Thanks,
Phil

Hi Phil,
Nothing clever about the electrical system. It is just a rocker switch and
visual check for position.

I also found the standard electric flap system lacking so I designed and
built this simple modification. The attachment shows the mechanical and
electrical components and circuitry that allow a momentary contact switch to
get the flaps moving and stop at the next position going either direction.
A "traffic light" on the panel shows red for "full" orange at "half" and
green for "in motion."
Since I am not yet flying I can't confirm that the notches in the rod are
located precisely for half flaps but from static tests they are about right.

I have been to one RR fly in from the UK. It was two years ago when the
weather was not too good and hence not any Europas. I would love to come
again but it has to fit in with our winter migration to Florida and that
means a couple of weeks later than currently proposed. RR is just a bit too
far to come for just a weekend as a separate trip.

my FWFD kit from europa as well as other manufactured parts that have arrived recently

the normal aircraft metal etch primer. I would then add the normal two pack

ALSO, I am still not clear whether it would be a good idea to coat the firewall

Help appreciated.

Another possibility is the FPS from Aircraft extra's, You can adjust it for

Subject: | Re: painting a plated engine mount frame |
Just an opinion,
The aircraft with the anodized frames are holding up very well without
paint. Nose gears and mounting frames are doing well also.
I personally would not paint the frame. Use ACP 50 or similar
anticorrosion coatings on your annual inspections and it is fine.
Inspections are a breeze as you don't have to inspect every crack in the
paint for problems.
Please note the the pros of painting are it is easy to clean and
brightens up that dark hole. Follow the paint manufacturers prep
instructions. Powder coating is good on steel, but powder coating of
aluminum should be monitored as the temper of components made from
aluminum could be compromised if excessive heat is used in the process.
Whether you paint or not, do not use metal clamps or zip ties directly
on the frames as that will cause wear of the protective coatings and
start corrosion.
Please use WDG (aka Adel )clamps or other rubber coated tight fitting
clamps to prevent paint/anodizing wear and eventual corrosion. If you
must use a wire tie strap or zip tie, please use rubber tubing or
similar as a cushion mount. Just slit and place your short piece of
hose over the frame tubing and then attach the zip tie around the hose
as the mount. Then use another zip tie to hold the component or wire
snugly to the mount... Do not allow components to rub up against the
engine frame or gear frame as unchecked, corrosion can cause eventual
corrosion or structural problems and costly repairs.
I even use stainless steel straps Reduxed on the gear frame for mounting
the nose gear springs to prevent eventual wear. I am told they have
homes for people like me. But it works.
